Puppy need shots

Also, some dog breeds are not natural swimmers. I believe boxers are one of those breeds. Maybe you should make sure the dog is protected from the pool.

Feel bad for the pup. This dog will get birthday parties, Easter baskets, Christmas photos with santa, Christmas gifts, everything. It will live in the lap of luxury. It will sleep in the beds in our home, not outside! It will be given the best of the best. Trust me.:thumbsup2

Ok here is a crash course on puppy vaccines for you. Puppies start vaccines at between 6-8 weeks old. They need need vaccines every 3 weeks until AFTER they are 16 weeks old. That last vaccine is the most important as it is what gives them the immunity that will last the year. After puppy shots they will need vaccines once a year (unless being boarded somewhere then one vaccine is recommended every 6 months ) the rabies vaccine is given at 16 weeks or older and can only be given by a vet. In most states the first rabies is good for a year, then the subsequent ones are good for three years if given on time. You can find the basic combo vaccine DHPP (distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, and most important parvovirus ) at feed stores. However, if they have been stored improperly or given incorrectly they will be useless in protecting you puppy. Dogs also seem to have a higher rate of vaccine reaction to the brands of vaccine found at feed stores. Some vets recommend a DHLPP vaccine that you won't be able to find at a feed store, this vaccine also protects against Lepto. Bordatella is The other vaccine, that covers kennel cough and is hard to find in feed stores. I always recommend have your vet give vaccines as puppies are wiggly and its easy to have the needle poke out the other side of skin and squirt your vaccine everywhere. Vets also vouch for the efficacy of their vaccines and how they have been handled and stored before your puppy got them. some vet clinics and boarding facilities will not admit animals with home done vaccines, if that were to happen you would have to have the dog revaccinated at a vet clinic anyway.

So, yes your puppy is very young to be away from mom. Most vets offer a free new puppy health check. Get him in and they can worm him, give him a fecal test for other worm/parasites that the general wormer doesn't cover. They will check him for the obvious genetic issues, listen to his hearts, etc. they can then explain what other tests are recommended for your area (like heart worm ) and recommend a vaccine schedule for you. If pricing for vaccines seems high, call around some vets offer a package to include all vaccines for the first year. You can also find a low cost vaccine clinic. However, DO NOT skip any vaccines. Parvo is very common, lives in the ground for YEARS, can be fatal, and is very very expensive to treat. So get your vaccines:) . Also because of Parvo don't be taking this new puppy places until after 16 weeks and it's final set of puppy vaccines. Even with vaccines puppies can get Parvo and it is no good for anyone to have to deal with!!

Good luck and feel free to PM me with any questions :)

HOLY CRAP!!!!!!!!! You people are so judge mental. I suppose you have never heard of a dog getting ran over by a car, dying in some type of accident. Nope. I suppose not. Pathetic!!!! I guess people don't die in accidents either do they?
What about kids? Ever heard a child that died due to an accident. Guess not. Wow, I wish I were that lucky!

Before the dog needs a commitment to photos with Santa and an Easter basket, he needs the promise of routine veterinary care. Just because your husband can give shots with stuff from the farm store, doesn't mean he ought to.

i am glad he has a vet appointment. If you call back and tell them he is not even 5 weeks, you may get in more rapidly. The big tummy could be worms, not good nutrition.

This is not about being judgmental. This is about you posting a very controversial topic and being upset when people are stating the obvious. You poor pup is way to young to be away from its mother. In addition to compare you poor previous pups death to children dying in an accident is out of line. I understand it was an accident but what did you expect for people to say?

My two beautiful Siamese are shelter cats. They were bought at 10 weeks and had their shots already.

I agree. We had a boxer and I can definitely say the are not good swimmers at all. We lived near a lake. We took him to the lake one time and that was enough for us. He could not swim nor did he have an interest in it. It was worse than watching a cat trying to get out of a bathtub full of water.

:thumbsup2 MTE!

The most important thing a pet owner can do is to make sure that they do everything that they can to ensure the health and well-being of the animal. Photos with Santa and Easter baskets with pretty treats are not important. Nor do they mean anything to an animal that is incapable of distinguishing Christmas from the first Tuesday in October.

I'm glad that the OP has made a vet appointment for the pup. I still think that waiting another 2 weeks to get him checked out is too long.

So you can afford to provide "the lap of luxury", is that based on cheaping out on other stuff? The puppy doesn't care about Christmas and Birthday parties, it needs health care which it seems your only grudgingly providing. Anyone who puts any sort of effort into learning about how to care for a puppy would realize this is too young for you to have it. But you know..so long as it looks cute in it's Easter outfit I suppose it doesn't matter.

For what it's worth, at the height of the Taco Bell chihuahua craze I know someone that ended up with a 4 week old puppy. They were being sold at a flea market and this puppy was the runt of the litter and the last one left. The seller said he'd just throw it in the dumpster if it was still there at the end of the day. On threat of police involvement, the puppy was taken and immediately taken to the vet to find out if it was even possible to raise by hand. She needed feeding every few hours and more attention than most people would have ever wanted to bother with.

Well this is what is was or what I was thinking. We are a farm family. We hardly ever use a vet unless we spay/neuter our pets, which we do. And my husband takes care of most of all this stuff, so I thought about just letting him take care of the dog too. But she is going to the vet.

I was reading a article on the net the other night about this very message board and just how judge mental many posters here are. And it was right. But I did learn about the boxers not being able to swim, I did not know that. But we are taking extreme measures with the pool now, can't do much about the pasture with a pond in it though.

People can be judgmental, but they can also be informative. Did you ever have your other dog blood tested for anything? Did you try to find any information on when puppies should be separated from their mothers, or what to look for in a good breeder? Did you ever do an research on the breed of dog you were buying? Or the one you owned first? If you have a pool or a pond, a non-swimming dog isn't the best breed for you.

In this day in age, it's so easy to find answers. After our last dog got hit by a car (totally my fault), I made sure our dog is not a digger, and definitely not a runner (because with kids, it's so easy for dogs to get out when you open the door). I learned from my mistakes. I also learned that my first dog, purchased from a "puppy store," was definitely a puppy mill dog (my vet was shocked she was healthy).

one doesn't have to pass judgement to tell you that your "breeder" would be facing animal abuse charges for selling puppies too young if they were in many other states. just because you don't like what is being said doesn't mean the other people aren't right or that they are just being "judgmental".

Well what makes it even worse was the week before that we had to put down another dog we had for 15 years. That was sad.

I am sorry, OP. We are a farm family, too, and I know that it is common for many things related to the animals be done without a vet. But I agree that for such a small puppy, I would take it to the vet for an initial checkup. We just got a puppy too--a black lab. The people who we got him from had done his first shots and dew clawing, even though they are just farmers, not breeders or vets. The owners waited until the pups were 8 weeks old and the mother was very tired of her 9 puppies before they went home with anyone. I give shots to our large animals (sheep and cows), but I decided to take my puppy to the vet for his shots just because I don't feel I know as much about puppy health to catch anything. I have found the Oregon Humane Society website has a lot of good info for new puppy owners.

So you live on a farm & have had atleast two previous dogs (who both just died), but you have no idea about dogs or how to care for one? Is this a joke?

Four weeks is way too young. Veterinary care is a necessity, not an option, like Santa pictures or Easter baskets, which are actually for the owners' pleasure, not the dogs'.

The dog would like to be with its mother until it is ready to leave, at a time deemed by nature and not human convenience or profit grubbing.

The dog would like to be kept safe from harm and unless it has webbed feet, like water dogs such as pointers, would not like to swim.

Please return the dog.

The simple fact that you accepted a 4 1/2 week old puppy shows that you did absolutely NO research on how to best prepare or take care of a puppy. A simple google search would have told you that 4 1/2 weeks is utterly horrifying for a breeder to be letting puppies go at that young age.

You took the 4 1/2 week old puppy, so you have just as much culpability in taking a not-yet-ready-to-be weaned puppy from its mother.

If you had cared at all about the health of your puppy, you would not have purchased one from a breeder selling at 4 1/2 weeks nor would you have even thought about bringing one home. Even if the mother had died and the puppies were being bottle fed, it is still in the puppy's best interest to keep the litter together till a minimum of 8 weeks.

Did you read about 4 1/2 week old puppies being too young to leave the litter?

You seem to be avoiding that issue in all your replies.

I don't understand. If you have had dogs in the past, then you know what shots and heart worm mess they need. Did those other dogs ever go to the vet?

Call the vet back and request an appointment tomorrow. Explain the urgency of the situation.
