Pending our home visit tomorrow (wish me luck) I will be getting Cosmo (see below) next Saturday. He will be 9 weeks old and they think he is a wirehared fox terrier/ shih tzu mix. I talked to his foster mom in WV last night to get some info on him. The brand of puppy food (Diamond) that he is currently eating doesn't seem to be available in the Northeast. She will be sending some up with him but not enough to last very long. Does anyone have any recommendations on a good dry puupy food (he apparently likes lamb and rice)? I went to the PetSmart site and there are just so many choices.

Thanks

Autumn

I would recommend Iams or Beneficial - that's what our dog eats. Don't change the food around too much - it's not good for the puppy - enjoy your angel!

We use Iams. It is good stuff, along with kibbles and bits. Kibbles and Bits blows up in the dogs stomache, and thats not good. The first ingrediant is corn, so that is why. Good luck!

I'd mix what he's used to with the new stuff too to give his tummy a lttle time to adjust to the new stuff.
BTW, he's ADORABLE!

I'm hoping to mix the food that she brings me with whatever brand I end up buying so that it should be a fairly smooth transition from one to the other. I'm going to talk to my vet about it as well.

Thanks

If you start him off on a good, clean diet, you can help his health (and your vet bills!) tremendously. We use Petguard and LickYourChops, and my sister uses Bravo www.bravorawdiet.com . You can easily get any of these in the Northeast. Especially For Pets carries Bravo, and Whole Foods/Wild Oats carries Petguard and LYC. Ounce-for-ounce, Petguard is actually cheaper than supermarket brands if you buy the big cans in the 12-pack case (5% case discount). If we had known about what was in supermarket petfood when we adopted our older cat, we'd have saved him 3 1/2 years of illness and saved ourselves a lot of heartache (and vet bills).

I could not find Diamond either, and that is what our breeder used. Our vet recommended Eukanuba Lamb and Rice puppy food, and our pup is doing very well on it.

Your puppy is adorable.

How adorable :flower: :flower: :goodvibes

When I got ny puppy a few weeks ago, the person I got her from said she was eating Eukanuba and Wellness for puppies. I went out and brought all this puppy food and when I got her home she didn't like any of it-LOL. So I had to go out and test try all these different foods.

LOL- What a sweetie - Is she a Yorkie? According to the foster mom , Cosmo's favorite food is Planter's cheese balls lol. THis scares me a little because I want to keep him away from people food.

My guys both eat Purina One. Dodger eats the growth and development formula, Monty eats the adult lamb and rice. Both seem to like it. Monty is incredibly picky, and this was the only thing he would eat. I think Dodger will eat pretty much anything.

Definately mix what the foster mom gives you in with the new food.

He's such a cutie. :)

Tell HIM that when you're sitting at the dinner table and he's sitting next to you staring at you with those eyes. ;)

I know, I know that's how my other dog always gets me ... but I'm going to try to be strong LOL.

We should arrange a puppy playdate with Cosmo, Dodger and Monty. I think we only live about an hour apart.

When I got my dog he was eating Eukanuba. I switched him to Nutro Natural which he was doing great on. Nutro then introduced a new line called Nutro Ultra. Ultra translates to expensive. ;) I've had him on it for about 6 months now. One of the things that makes me recommend the Nutro products is they make the animal's coat extremely glossy. I have a tri sheltie and he has one of the most beautiful coats I have ever seen. I thought I was just biased until I took him in for his yearly check-up and the vet commented on it! I'm very happy with it. :flower:

Lol! We should. :) Monty will bring the snacks!

My guys like to sit on either side of me at the table and look up at me so whatever side I turn to, there's a pup staring at me. When they realize it won't work, they run to the other side and do it to Chris. I wonder if they practice the sad "feed me" eyes when we're not looking...

I feed Canidae to our dog. It is an "all stage" food, can be given to both puppies, dogs & seniors. It is a premium dog food, she eats less of it, she poops less & has less gas. It is more expensive but also lasts a long time. There website is www.canidae.com, to find a dealer or you can order it online. I went through many different brands for our dog, Wellness, Science Diet, Diamond, Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lovers Soul, and several others, she liked Canidae best. She also had alot of acid in her urine & it was killing our grass, this dog food seems to have helped that as well.

Thanks so much for all of your help! This is going to be a tough decision but at least I know there are a lot of high quality options. I'll post new pictures when he comes home. I can't wait!

KristiKelly offered a lot of choices. Dog food is something I'm becoming more passionate about, so I apologize in advance =)

Purina, Science Diet, Euckanuba, Iams, etc are YUCKY YUCKY YUCKY foods. Don't feed your baby that, please. THere are so much better foods out there at lower cost. Many people feed that junk to save money, and then they end up feeding twice what you would feed on a GOOD food, so not saving any money at all!

THings to look for:

NO CORN - this is a cheap cheap filler that dogs cannot digest. Foods that use corn in anyway are doing it to save themselves money and are not doing your dog any good. Besides, this is a major allergy, many many dogs are allergic to corn and their owners don't even know it. Causes skin irritants, dry skin, etc. Corn gluten is the same as corn, just relabeled to trick the consumer.

NO BYPRODUCTS - you don't want to know.

THREE SOURCES OF PROTEIN in the top few ingredients - that is, if your dog doesn't have an existing allergy and need a lamb only meal, or something. It's okay if it says Chicken Meal, or just Chicken - but not Chicken ByProduct.

TOP THREE INGREDIENTS SHOULD HAVE 2 PROTEIN AND 1 GOOD FILLER at minimum - your main ingredient should not be rice, grain, or corn.

That being said, there are few foods that are truly good quality, and even fewer at your local pet store. The family owned small stores usually carry these items becuase those are people that care more about animals then the almighty dollar, and want to stock and recommend good things. KristiKelly already listed some goods one - Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lovers Soul is good, inexpensive (cheaper than most of those icky brands listed above) and is relatively easy to find. They hvae a store locator on their website. Not carried by a national chain, but at most feed stores. I had 15 stores in my dinky city that carried it. I am feeding Natural Balance now, which is better than Chicken Soup and cheaper than the yucky foods listed above. I find it at PetCo (but not at PetsMart) - hidden away, you'll have to look for it. They have several lines, but their basic all level food is quality enough for puppies and adults - you don't need a puppy food on good food, btw. Harley LOVES this food, and the kibble is small enough for a wee one to eat. With the canned food, you can SEE pieces of vegetables and meat in it, so impressive!

I used to feed Nutro Ultra, but Natural Balance is cheaper and better - Nutro has 3 diff lines, their lower two are not very good BUT are better than Iams, Euckanuba, etc - but their Ultra is pretty good, but overpriced. Save yourself $ and go with a good food. Your pup will eat a lot less and poop a lot less because it's quality ingredients and not cheap fillers.

The big names in pet food spend millions trying to convince us that their food is good for them, just read the bag - it's right there in the ingredents what junk they are selling us. Good luck, and congrats on your new baby!!!!!!!

I definitely have to echo Aimee's post. Excellent advice!
Unfortunately my hell hounds won't eat natural balance. They eat Nutro Ultra, which actually I usually pick up at Petsmart on sale.

I second Esmerelda with the Purina

Moreso because of it's protien content. When we got our Akita we were told to check the protien %, it should be 25% or higher for proper nutrition and the Purina (in the burgundy bag) qualified.
