Pumping gas

So, how much higher per gallon is the gas where there is no self service? The last station I knew of around here that was full service charged about 20 cents more per gallon - of course that is when gasoline was $1.35 for full service.

well jersey is around 1.90 regular 1.98 for plus 2.05 super thats in south jersey.Higher for north jersey im sure.

Wow, I never knew there were places that it was against the law to pump your own gas. Here in NH there are only a few full service places left, and they're the most expensive around. I learned how to pump gas at age 6, and now that I drive myself, I'm pumping my own gas every week or 2. Not looking forward to this winter.
But on the flipside, I can't imagine having never pumped gas before and then going into a gas station that was all self serve.

I can understand how a person from NJ might not know how to pump their own gas if they've never had to do it. What I don't understand is how one of my best friends (a lifelong MA resident) doesn't know how to pump her own gas:rolleyes:

Gas prices in Jersey are very comparable to the neighboring states. Mom told me it's because 1) we have the oil refineries right in Elizabeth and 2) the stations pay less in insurance because the dumb people (ie, the public) aren't out there pumping gas while on their cell phone and getting in and out of their cars.

I miss Jersey gas pumps, especially in the winter!

I love not having to pump my own gas!! Don't have to get out in the cold, snowy, hot, humid or rainy weather.::yes::
Me too! I have NO idea why anyone would rather pump their own gas.
I have never had them spill gas down my car(when the gas pump clicks, they put more gas in to make an even number), and if I pull right up to the pump, never have had to wait more than 1 minute or so.
I would be verrrry annoyed if they changed the law and we had to pump our own gas!
Plus gas is not more expensive here, and is often cheaper.

I know...I do it all the time, LOL! It's my friend who has never once pumped her own gas. She's always lived in MA, too. It's just too weird:rolleyes:

Insurance is cheaper?,i think you got that wrong, i was paying $10,000 a year for insurance to have a gas station in jersey.Nothing is cheaper running a gas station, everything is expensive,my lease was $5500.00 a month, electric bills were $1000.00 or more a month depending on how much i pumped ,workers salaries, geez i could go on and on and for what making 10 cents profit a gallon at best.

I always wait until I get to Oregon to get gas and get more before I leave! I love it when they pump my gas for me.

Here on Long Island most places have pump your own or pay higher and they will pump it for you, but the township I live in does not allow you to pump your own.

New Jersey is great. I hope they never change the law because I would be at a lost!

ITs not any higher in NJ. IN fact, its lower than self serve states of PA, and DE.

I pay about $1.88 for full serve regular. Its about $1.93/1.95 in PA

I love not pumping my own gas. I always go into a bit of a panic when I visit another state and have to put my own gas in. And guess what, it's cheaper here in nj where they pump it for me then most other border states.

*shrug* That's just what my mom said - she read an article somewhere. How much MORE would your insurance have been if you had to worry about Joe Q Public getting out of the car in the winter and blowing things up with static electricity?

Me too. I get so confused and don't know what to do. Do I pay first? Do I just go ahead and pump and pay later?

People I know who live in NY all get their gas here in NJ because it is a lot cheaper.

We love it when we are going to AC and need gas. We wait til we get to Jersey and have them pump it. We are in MD and the Jersey gas is always a lot lower in price so that is another bonus.

Hey katerkat i hope i didnt sound like i was jumping all over you ,i wasnt,im sorry if you took it that way,i could only imagine what it wouldve been if it was self serve, but then again i wouldnt have had as much employees either.

That's because the state gas tax is 11.4 cents per gallon higher in PA, 8.5 cents higher in DE, 9 cents higher in Maryland, and 15.15 cents per gallon higher in NY. At 14.5 cents per gallon, New Jersey has the fourth lowest state gas tax in the US. (Georgia is the lowest at 7.5 cents per gallon, and Wisconsin is the highest at 31.1 cents per gallon.)

After you adjust for the tax difference, it looks like you are paying around 5 cents per gallon to have someone pump it for you. (Of course, a true comparison would have to account for many other factors, as well.) That seems pretty cheap to me. At stations that have both, the difference is a LOT more than 5 cents.
