I can't pump my own gas because I live in New Jersey. According to the New Jersey Retailers Gasoline Association, New Jersey is only one of two states that does not allow the motorist to pump their own gas. Does anyone know which other state follows the same rule?

Thanks.

Don't know if it still is..........but it used to be Oregon.

I lived in WA and visited my best friend who lived in Portland on the weekends. Every gas station was the same (this was 1986)

As of this past summer Oregon was indeed the other state.

I could not believe it. I got out of my car to fill up and the attendant looked like I was trying to rob him or something.

Not being able to pump my gas was the exact reason I made sure I had enough before hitting NJ on either the way to or from Florida...drives me nuts!

I HATE it when they top off the tank and it spills all down the side of my rig!

Diesel is worse- it foams- so they keep on clickin away until theres a nice puddle on the ground and a huge spot on the side of DH's truck..

No NJ or Oregon gas for me!

Yep, it's us........Oregon...........I hate it............I'm always excited when we go back to CA or up to WA and WOW---I don't have to WAIT to pump my gas!

Does anyone know the reason behind not being able to pump your own gas? Seems pretty silly to me.

ostensibly for safety reasons although actually to reduce unemployment rates, and since then oil companies and gas station owners have unsuccessfully tried to have the law repealed on several occasions. The law is, according to reports, supported by consumer and motoring groups, and presumably by gas station attendants.

From the link above.:)

The gas stations I go to in NJ never top off. They just let it stop and never top off.

I never have a problem. I love the fact that I don't have to do it. I don't have a problem waiting, but if I go with my family and DH is driving he usually waits. (Maybe because I'm female!)

It's the best thing ever when it's twenty degrees fahrenheit, the snow is falling, and all you have to do is crack the window open a centimeter to hand the gas pumping guy your debit card. Meanwhile, you can keep the heat blowing on you and the music playing.

I never wait long ... a minute at most ... plus the huge time savings of not having to trek into the convenience store and deal with whomever at the register if I want to pay cash ...

There is no nobility in pumping one's own gas ... and no medals in heaven for it. ;)

same thing happened to me the first time i drove through nj. the guy was reall FREAKING out. :p

I remember driving through Oregon and experiencing not being able to pump your own gas. I had never heard of anything like that before.

I love not having to pump my own gas!! Don't have to get out in the cold, snowy, hot, humid or rainy weather.::yes::

hehehe I find that sooo strange... not being able to pump the gas!

I agree...but apparently my almost 82 year old mother thinks so...she still pumps her own gas at a gas station that has both self and full serve...SAME PRICE!!

I wish that Michigan wouldn't allow me to pump my own gas, especially in January.

I truly do.

Georgia prohibits anyone under 16 from pumping gas.

Well being from new jersey and having my own gas station and repair shop before,i dont want to pump my own gas.I hate when im away and all dressed up and have to get out and pump it then smell like gas for the rest of the night,if theres self serve or pay more for full service, ill pay the extra every time to let them do it.Now on the other hand when im driving my 73 corvette around and stop for gas ill get out and watch them put the gas in,there always extra careful with me standing there watching them.
