Pug owners - a question

I'm on the hunt for a pug puppy for my parents, since they have no first hand experience getting a dog from a breeder.

I have a list of reputable breeders from the Patriot Club and have some emails out to them. does anyone recommend anyone in Southern New England?
Also - is there any particular genetic defectives to look out especially for?

anyone? I know there are a lot of pug owners on the boards
