Has anyone been there? Vacationed there?
What is there to do?

I grew up there and live on another island now, 60 miles away from Puerto Rico.

There's a thread already on the DIS, on the Spanish language board... here's a thread that's almost entirely en English from there:

As far as what to do... beaches, rainforest, colonial city... there's plenty :)

I was there a few years ago.... let me see if I can dig up my trip report... overall it was a positive experience, but I wouldn't go again.

I have been three times, each time on a cruise. I would have enjoyed spending more time there. Highlights for me are El Morro, the fortress, El Yunque, the rain forrest, The Bacardi Rum factory, although the tour is way too rushed. The beaches are beautiful. I like Old San Juan. The people are friendly. The negatives? Lots and lots of litter, especially compared to other Caribbean islands. Its a shame because I think that Puerto Rico has the nicest beaches and natural resources of all of them.

Absolutely. In some areas it was downright disgusting.

Really nice beaches, and EXCELLENT food! Lots of things to do.... I like casinos, but I wouldn't recommend going to any in Puerto Rico.

Sadly, when we went to the rainforest it was during a drought. It wasn't special at all.

Actually one thing not to be missed, IMO, is Mosquito Bay! What a cool nighttime experience!

I can't wait to read it.

I agree with the litter comment.

While it's bad, it's not as bad as some of the other islands (and some cities in the US). They've gotten quite a bit better this year IMO, but it might just be because it's an election year.

The rainforest is much better this year since it's been quite wet. It's best to go a day or two after a rainfall, so there's easier access to the rainforest.

If you rent a car, I would suggest heading south for a day to Ponce. Until 1905 it was the main city of PR and has quite a well preserved historic district and a great art museum.

I would also suggest taking a day trip to Culebra, one of the outlying islands. It's quite literally, a virgin island... culturally, economically, and politically a part of Puerto Rico, but geologically part of the Virgin Islands. You can take a ferry for $2, but it's a few hours. If you can, for $25-40/per person, you can catch an air taxi there on Air Flamenco.

I went with DH on one of his business trips in May of last year. It was wonderful. I didn't really notice litter problems, but we stayed mostly at our resort beach and pool. El Morro was gorgeous, and we loved Old San Juan as well. I would go back in a heartbeat!
