Publci School teacher journal

I doubt anything is different in the Detroit Public School System.

Why are you shocked?

None of that suprised me in the least. I work for a suburban school with special education students, and honestly the Bronx teachers plight seemed tame.

So far this WEEK, I have seen two fist fights, three sent to guidance, some students calling other names, plus some threats. I have gotten things thrown at me, called a b*&^%, and said to to Go to He**!

AND ITS ONLY TUESDAY!

We dont have enough books to go around, so students need to share, and can NOT take any home. We have students that refust to do work, and refuse to do detentions.

I am at my max with special education students in every classroom. Out of the 107 students on my team, 26 are classified special education!

That teacher in the bronx only had 67 if I remember right.

I eat lunch standing up every day (I might get a 15 minute lunch if I am lucky and that is with students! ), I fight for use fo the copiers and supplies, and I have to hunt down administrators every time a problem erupts.

I have no breaks, and I am set with classes all day long. The time between classes are one MINUTE! ONE MINUTE!

And if you can believe, I have been working without a contract for two years! There is talk of a strike.

The teacher in the Bronx had it easy! (incidentally, I am only the assistant)... the teachers get it much worse!

My husband and I both work in the public school system in a small rural area in Ohio. Most of this does not surprise me either. I've been called names and had numerous things thrown at me (including a chair) and most of that was done by one five year old.

The only thing that actually surprised me was that he seem to have something positive to say about the "No Child Left Behind" act.

I wish that our government officials were forced to spend some time working in the public schools before enacting laws and mandating standardized tests.

I am thankful my school isn't that bad. I do agree about the difference when your principal supports you. And even in our suburban school we have problems with technology--today 2 of 3 copiers for 110 staff members were on the fritz.

Tell me about the copiers! We have had the same problem constantly here. We actually have an aide that does the copying, but she's out constantly.

I wont even get into the lack of synchronization of computer systems within the building. .. it took me 20 minutes last week to print one thing out!

Well to me this is horrible news. I guess the state of education needs to be addressed. Maybe on a National level. Why do we have to treat kids who act like this. When we have problem kids in our school I always recommend boot camp. What are we teaching these children? They are going to be our future leaders some day and sad to say they wont have the skills necessary to make important decisions.I work at a great school, and am thankful about the job I have. I feel badfor some kids who need to be medicated so they can sit still in class. Some I just feel are a product of their environment. We dont have much violence in our school but we do have problems. I just wish something can be done. It has to be up to us as teachers to make a difference.
