I am trying in vain to open a cr2 image in PSP9.

It has it listed on the file type list, but when I choose the image and "cr2", it says "the specified file can not be identified as a supported type" and won't allow me to open it.

What am I doing wrong? TIA!

PSP 9 was out in 2004(guess), so it may not support raw files from cameras produced after that. Check the PSP website for possible updates.

Well, it says in the manual it supports them. Plus in the file type list, it's in there. That's why this is so confusing. :confused3

I will go to their website and see what they say...

Some Canon DSLRs use .cr2 files, but not all .cr2 files are the same. A program developed in 2004 has no way of knowing what would be required to process a .cr2 file from a camera that came out 3 years later.

Same way ADOBE Photoshop which costs several hundred dollars does not usually support raw files from new cameras until they release a patch/update.

May I ask what camera the files are from?

I have the XT - got it in 2005.

Funny thing - I just went to look at my file type and it says Paint Shop Pro 9 Image. It's saying that for all my RAW files. Now I'm really confused!

I googled my issue and I'm learning that maybe I need a RAW-converter?

The problem is that every new camera that uses a RAW format implements it a little differently each time. Your camera is not likely in the list in the software, so the software does not know how to interpret the data. If it did not do this check, it would likely map the colors incorrectly and it would look horrible. Because the RAW formats are owned by the maker, they have the libertyto modify it every time they use it. They are not allowed to do that with JPG.

Ok the XT, that explains it.

All the .cr2 files are associated with PSP, no big deal.

ask and you shall receive.

Y'all are very helpful, thanks!

Quick question before I load up that converter. If I convert to 16-bit TIFF in my XT software - which PSP does support - is that better than just taking my pics in jpeg format and fixing from there?

I want the best quality - and to know that I didn't just buy a 4G memory card for nothing. :)

IMO until you learn the ins and outs of shooting in RAW, you would benefit from shooting in Raw+large jpeg. Yes it does take up more room on the memory card, but you have the ready to go jpeg and the digital negative(raw file) for when you learn how to tweak the images to your liking.

16bit tiff is great, but what are you going to do with that file. Most consumer friendly photo labs only take jpegs anyways. If you are talking about tiff files for archive purposes, you already have the RAW files to archive(and be sure to back them up). I only archive RAW files, everything else is deleted after being sent to the lab or uploaded to a photo host, if I need another jpeg or tiff it takes seconds for me to produce it from the original raw file.

But like in all aspects of photography, there are endless amounts of opinions on the matter.
