PSA to parents: Don't show up drunk to school!

Yes, that title accurately sums up what I'm been thinking lately.

Today, I had not one not two but three very boozy parents showing up at school in various states of drunkeness -- all before 12 noon!

If other people can smell the booze down the hallway, you've drunk too much!
If you can't speak to other adults, you've drunk too much!
If you can't write down your childs name on a slip of paper, you've drunk too much!

We won't even talk about the "wacky tobacky" smell!

Some parents are so selfish. Every year the same two drunk parents (a couple) come to our school's Winter and Spring chorus concerts. The stink, they're loud and obnoxious, and I feel so sad for their two daughters.

Wow, that's really sad. I feel awful for the children who have to go home with them.

I hear you on that one. Last week we had to call the police as other parents were complaning of a group of parents smoking what we presume was pot at the front gate. Aparently they do this every day nearly. So sad.

That happens all to often here. I get so mad at my students, and then I meet their parents . The girl who cuts my hair is a former student, and her mother always showed up at school events drunk. I can remember how embarrassed the girl always was. I'm so proud that she is making a career for herself and not continuing the cycle her parents started.

My DS went to school with a kid whose Mom showed up tanked everyday. That poor kid, she was so embarrassing...... all of us Moms would see her coming and quickly go the opposite direction. She used to volunteer to drive for school trips, sports outings etc.....Ummm, NO we would drive her kid as much as possible.

In June, MY DS graduated from high school. It was the day before his graduation and we had a house full of people. My DD had been home sick for a couple of days and was going to be off the whole following week to spend time with her Grandparents. Her teacher had put together all her work and I was supposed to swing by at 3:30 to pick it all up. Meanwhile several relatives had arrived and most of us were enjoying a cold drink. I forgot, at 5:15 her teacher called me. (Loved her teacher) and asked if I was still coming since she knew my house was chaos she thought she would call! I was so embarrassed, I said "yes, thank you so much I'll be on my way as soon as I find a driver, I've had a few drinks"! I had only had 2 beers but was mortified to go into her class even though school was out and all the kids were gone.

A teacher I used to work with had a parent come in for a parent-teacher conference drunk. We're on the 3rd floor of the building and our floor is very secluded from the rest of the building (just 5 classrooms up there). Luckily she was able to run out of the room. He was getting very loud and aggressive.

That's just sad. I feel bad for the kids. If the parents don't give a hoot about coming to school drunk, can you imagine what life at home must be like?

I had a parent reeking of alcohol drop her child off in the a.m. and tell me " he's your problem now" Admin. was notified, and you guessed it-mom never showed up to pick the child up at the end of the day
This happened many years ago, but it is still one of the saddest days I can remember

I know our school sends home information telling parents that they will not release a child to a parent who seems impaired by any substance or if they fear for the child's well being, but there isn't much that can be done for the ones who come to plays and conferences like that.
Last year some woman was being very obnoxious at a school play. She kept clapping randomly, singing along and yelling, "you go kids", just imagine some goofy drunk cheering on the kids... only thing is I think she was sober, and she mentioned halfway through the event, "oh, my kids don't go here anymore"... um, then what are ya doing here ya crazy old bat? I thought the reason we have to be buzzed in was to keep out non-parent wackos!

That's not a very kind assessment of someone of whose mental health you are not aware. It does sound like she has psychological, or personallity, issues. And maybe she was there because she knows other kids who were performing. Did attendees at the play need to be buzzed in - or is it something that the school advertises outside and for which they charge admission?

Or maybe she was just like a lot of other obnoxious parents that really don't have a clue how to act in public.

People wonder why our schools are going downhill...

They just went on their way...

Most of the parents don't have cars and the other teachers/staff said it is completely normal.

The police and/or security were not called.

That is horrible! But the child was probably better off!!!

We got a phone call last week a my dance studio from the police asking us to hold a student (12 years old) because her mom had been in a car accident. Luckikly, the mom was not injured.

When we told the child what happened she immediately responded with, "Oh, she was drunk. She was drunk when she drove me here. She was swerving all over the road. My grandmother says she's an alcoholic."

She was at the police station being booked when another family member came to pick up the child.

Very sad.
