Protocol for walking up to characters?? This is a foreign concept at WDW...

Okay, so we are lifelong WDW people coming to DLR for the first time in a couple weeks. We can't wait to experience Walt's original park and are so excited for a new Disney adventure! It sounds like one of the more exciting differences between the two parks is the good possibility of running into "free roaming" characters. I think this sounds so magical, and I hope my kids get to see some of their favorite characters "at home" walking around Disneyland. At WDW we are used to strict meet and greet schedules/locations, lining up in advance, meeting characters only with handlers, etc. So I'm really intrigued how this whole "random" character meet and greet actually plays out in real life. If you see a character walking around unattended, what is the protocol? Can you just approach them and ask to take a photo with them? Will they give autographs? Do lines just spontaneously form? Just wanted to make sure we do the right thing.

Also, at the character meals, can you take photos and get autographs?

You can definitely take photos and get autographs at character meals. One time Minnie Mouse got so sad that we didn't ask her to sign our book. We had already seen her in the park and had her sign then. She was sad, so we had her sign again!

As far as the roaming characters go... there seem to be two different types. Some walk around and don't stop. They will sign autographs as they walk, and you can snap a photo if you are lucky. Don't expect to be the only people in the photo though. People tend to crowd around and follow the characters. The other thing you will see is a character walking with a line of people following. They will usually stop and the line will form for photos and autographs.

It's not that much different. Town Square has characters throughout the day. Lines will form, and cast members are really good about telling you when a character has to take a break, and/or is coming back.

I recommend Ariel's Grotto for both the food, and the character interaction. They allowed us plenty of time to eat, and then meet the princesses. Everyone meets Ariel when they first arrive, and then 4 additional ladies show up for pics and autographs.

The basic thing to remember is always have your camera ready, and your pen and autograph book.

ToonTown is a good place to see Mickey, although he is sometimes in Town Square. In ToonTown they have Photopass Photographers, but they do not normally have photopass photographers with any of the random characters.

Anna and Elsa are fastpass only in DCA, and I recommend doing that. The line goes quite quickly, and they have Photopass there with the princesses. Try and get your fastpass as early as you can during the day near the Animation Building in the Hollywood Section of the Park.

I travel alone, so sometimes I am searching for a fellow guest to help me out and take my pic, where photopass is not stationed. I don't normally do autographs, to make things easier on myself.

I also recommend Pixie Hollow, which is right near Tomorrowland. They have Photopass there with Tinker Bell, and usually one other pixie/fairie.

Personally I don't agree. I found a big difference (coming from DL, going to WDW.) So many of the character meets at DL are very informal and while certainly they are actually scheduled, it does feel rather spontaneous because they are just out with no sets around them. They are a part of the scenery so to speak. And while lines do form for these characters, they are generally pretty short and guests are very orderly. There are not always handlers either, especially in Toontown. But even without a handler, everyone finds the end of the line and waits till they're up. For the walking around characters that aren't stopping, while there will be a crowd going along with them it's not like they are mobbed or impeded. Stop by City Hall in the morning to find out where and when they have characters scheduled to be out.

I'm pretty sure the new Disneyland app also says where and when characters are expected to be.
I'll never forget our first DL trip with DD5 - when she was 3, and absolutely obsessed with everything Toy Story. My husband stopped at a store in Adventureland and DD and I were outside. Suddenly, Jessie walked by and stopped just across from us. DD ran over to her and got to meet her -such a wonderful moment! We got some great photos too.

If you are planning to do at least 1 character meal and several of the photo rides (Splash, Radiator Springs Racers, etc.) plus like to stop and ask Photopass photographers I think you'll get plenty of shots with 2 1/2 days.

Can't advise on doing 1 park a day or hopper - we've always done hoppers. We just like to have the flexibility to go back and forth. I've often run over to DCA to grab a FP for RSR and then meet DD and DH back in DL - but if it was just me and DD I probably would not do that - but would probably still like doing 1 park in the morning, then back to the hotel to rest, then back to the 2nd park in the evening. That's how most of our trips have been.

Exactly! ... If they are walking just follow them and when they stop, get in line... lines are short and fast... I love the M&G @ DL ... they seem so "natural"

We don't really meet many characters anymore, so I'm not an expert on it, but the most "natural" character interactions we have seen have been in Fantasyland. Alice and the Mad Hatter by her ride, Peter Pan runs around frequently, the wicked queen from Snow White. Each time there were only a few people around them. Pretty cool!

On our last trip this September, I was waiting by the Dumbo organ while my husband and son were on the ride, when Peter Pan came skipping out of nowhere, asked "I'm hunting pirates! Have you seen any???", and then ran off to climb on some topiaries when I shook my head no. Definitely one of the more memorable character interactions I've ever had!

Neither of my kids have been particularly keen on meeting characters but we love to see them walking out and about. Even if you're not standing in line with an autograph book it's still just as exciting seeing Goofy or Mickey stroll by. Once we saw Mary Poppins and Bert skipping up Main Street and with the lovely old fashioned music going it was like we were transported for a moment into the film. Spontaneous and magical!

When we were at DL in June, we ran into Peter Pan early in the morning in Fantasyland. He didn't have a handler CM with him nor a PhotoPass photographer. He was just walking around and goofing off and playing with all of the kids - young and old alike. It was awesome. We later saw Captain Hook in Fantasyland, too. Same thing...just walking around...no handler.

that same day, about 30 minutes later, we met the Mad Hatter next to the Mad Tea Party ride and he was a total ham. So funny!

Every day at Coke Corner in the afternoon, Alice and the Mad Hatter play musical chairs with kids. It's really cool. No FP required. No reservation needed.

I was at Disneyland a couple of weekends ago, and came upon the Queen of Hearts, Alice, and the Mad Hatter. At the time I came upon them they were asking riddles, and guests were asking them riddles. It was so much fun. Later I saw Bert & Mary Poppins before they performed in front of the castle. They stopped to take pics with this couple, but that was it (I could have seen them at the end of their picture taking). Later on, I saw Sleeping Beauty signing autographs by Snow White's well. None of them had handlers. I don't always see this, but it was nice on that one day - I think it was a Sunday.

December 2013 we took the Holiday Tour and while standing near the entrance to Pixie Hollow (is that what you guys call Tink's m&g too?) with the tour guide speaking and at two separate times Peter Pan and Captain Hook both stopped and interacted with our tour group. We were only in the area maybe 10 minutes tops. So much fun! I've also run in to Peter Pan running around Fantasyland and Pinochio too!

That's so awesome! That sort of interaction makes a much more real/magical experience for sure!

Seriously. It's like they really live there! Hope we get some magical moments like this.

This sort of thing would never happen at WDW!

First of all....I'm a little bit star-struck that Mary Jo has commented on my thread!

I've heard others say that the Alice in Wonderland characters are often out and about having great interaction with the guests. Alice is one of my boys' favorite movies right now, so they would be completely thrilled with this possibility! Thanks for sharing the photos as well.

P.S. We love the podcast and I feel like you guys are family. It was Leah's trip report a couple years ago that inspired us to start planning our DLR trip, and now I can't believe it's actually happening! I feel very well prepared with all that I've learned from the podcast over the years....thanks to you and the team!

Mary Poppins and Bert typically "stroll" in the mornings. We have found them walking around town square, and also wandering around Fantasyland. They don't stop and let a line form, but they will let you walk with them, talk to them, sign autographs while they walk and slightly pause for a picture or to let you get in front of them and take your child's picture while the child walks with them. Typically it is fairly easy to walk to the side or behind and get a turn with them, but one year there was a big group of adults that was basically shoving in front of the kids who were walking waiting to see them. That time Mary Poppins and I had to get a little more aggressive to get DD to her. ;) (Mary realized DD had been waiting and adults kept shoving in front of her and used her orderly personality to make others let DD have her turn as I slightly pummeled my way around the adults- as the others had done to us)

The Mad Hatter and Alice often stroll through Fantasyland and joke with guests and hold impromptu tea parties. Again, they don't often stand still for autographs and photos and let a line form, but they will sign autographs as they move and slightly pause for pictures. We have always gotten their autographs and photos.

Around the castle in the afternoons, characters will often pop up. You can also find random characters popping up in town square or right inside the park gates. Short lines will form for them. Our last trip, Captain Hook was strolling through Fantasyland. He took DD to a spot for photos, but then decided he didn't like that spot and moved somewhere else to play with her and take photos. There was no one around but he and DD. After we said goodby and left, a short line formed for him after people realized he was standing there waiting for people to come see him.

When you see a character, just follow. It is fine to approach them to talk or ask for an autograph or photograph- just be polite and follow their lead. If you follow them you will quickly figure out whether they are heading to a spot for photos, leaving, or strolling. Once the stepsisters and Cinderella walked past us (DD's favorites)- with the stepsisters bickering the whole way and Cinderella just walking and nodding to those as she passed. We followed them, and they stopped at wishing well by the castle and allowed a line to form for photos and autographs and we were first!

The big difference is that a lot of these characters, don't have handlers with them- so it feels like they are just out and about, which is nice.

We love that we never know who we might run into.

As far as the character meals, Minnie's breakfast is great. It is better than WDW characters meals. There are some characters that are almost always there, but you never know who else you might run into. I don't think we have ever seen less than 7 characters during that meal and once we saw 12. Goofy's used to be almost the same way, but in the last year they standardized that one, so now it is just like a WDW character meal.

Have a great trip! We think DLR/CA has a slightly more laid back feel, and we love that everything is so close together and quick walking distance. Be careful though-- we planned one trip to DLR and now we alternate coasts! I hope you love it as much as we do!

We got in a very short line for Pluto and Goofy, they were together. I thought that was funny, so I begged my 2 adult friends to wait with me. It was our turn, and CRUELLA came out, and started yelling "my PUPPIES! my PUPPIES! Where are they?? these are puppies, but not the right kind!" She was hilarious, and we ended up with photos of us with all 3, Pluto, Goofy, and Cruella!

We have seen Peter Pan, out goofing around, and even Malificent. Both over by the Snow White fountain, near the castle. No real line. Peter was showing kids how to flip their coins into the wishing well.
