I have stayed at AKL twice now, and have enjoyed both visits. The first trip we had a standard view room on the ostrich trail and had a balcony that "overlooked" the ceiling of the walkway to the bus stop. There was zero natural light, and we had no cell reception in the room. On the upside, it took 1 minute to get to the bus stop, and was a super quick pop down a flight of stairs to the pool, Mara, and Boma. The second time, we also booked a standard view room but ended up with an obstructed savannah view room. My animal loving daughter was in heaven and spent every second she could out on the balcony. The downside was that it was a HIKE from the lobby.
The pool is fantastic, and we all love it. I especially love the layout because I can sit by the slide and have a view of the entire pool. This eliminated my having a mild heart attack looking for my kid all the time (she's 10 and a strong swimmer but I like to have my eye on her at all times). The area has a nice tropical feel to it, and there are areas of shade available.
There are some plain food options available most of the time at the Mara like a burger, pizza, etc. I love the cous cous that they serve, which is random but yummy. The Mara is SUPER busy late at night - it seems a lot of people go when they get back from the park and the line can be quite long and you get a pager to wait for your food. Boma is delicious, and we did breakfast and dinner once per trip.
