Pronunciations!

I would like to know how YOU pronounce certain things places in WDW.

Jiko...is it jee-ko or j-eye-ko

Arusha Trail...ah-roo-sha or ah-rush-ah

O'Hana...is it hannah (like Darryl Hannah) or Hon-ah (rhymes with honda)

Le Cellier...sell-eee-ay or sell-eee-air

Ever hear somebody butcher the pronunciation of a ride/restaurant or place? Dish dish!

I think Jiko is pronounced j-eye-ko. The first syllable would rhyme with bike.

In Norway, nobody can pronouce Akershaus, so I asked a Norweigian CM once and she taught me how to properly say it: AH-ker-soos

Honestly, pronounciation is not my pet peeve. My pet peeve is when people spell the words wrong on the boards. I try not to say anything because it's usually an honest mistake and I don't want to hurt anybody's feelings, but some of them just get under my skin! Almost all restaurant names:

The restaurant in the Polynesian is 'Ohana. It's not O'hana (not Irish), not Ohana's (no girl named Ohana running it), and not O'Hana's (no Irish girl running it).

The buffet restaurant in Animal Kingdom Lodge is Boma. It's not Bomas or Boma's (it's not run by the guy who freaked out in the Galileo Seven episode of Star Trek!)

The other restaurant in AKL is Jiko. It's not Jikos or Jiko's (not run by a guy named Jiko - kinda sounds like a cousin of Timon, doesn't it?)

My biggest peeve on the boards, however, is when people refer to Disneyworld. No, you're thinking of Disneyland, which is all one word. The place in Florida is Walt Disney World (three separate words, though it is acceptable to leave off the Walt), named for Walt by his brother Roy as a permanant reminder that it was Walt's dream that made the place possible. Walt Disney World - WDW - not Disneyworld and certainly not DWD.

Okay, I'm calm now. Please don't think any less of me that these tiny details get on my nerves; I'm not angry at those who do these things, I'm just obsessive-compulsive and little stuff gets under my skin sometimes.

[Seriously, I do understand where you're coming from. We love 'Ohana - that's where we're having our anniversary dinner - but the spelling is just a losing battle....]

I find it amusing that your pet peeve is people misspelling words wrong on the boards, particularly restaurant names, yet you spelled Akershus wrong! Sorry, just had to point that out.

My pet peeve is when someone posts something like: Their was some hair in they're dinners so their getting there dinners free. I sometimes feel like the only person in the country who didn't sleep through grammar lessons!

Oh, well, I can barely add 2 + 2 (5, right?).

Haha, while we are on the subject of pet peeves on the boards, I have to admit to being irritated when people say something is a "mute point"...always gets me, LOL.

As to the original topic, I share the same exact pronounciations as 4orm in the very first reply.

I'm with WillCad on everything except the Akershus spelling. Drives me crazy I tell you! O'hanas, Bomas, Le Celler. Get them right please. And whilst we're at it...please don't call the Polynesian the Poly...When we stayed there several years ago, I overheard a guest calling it the Poly and several of the CMs there just shook their heads and rolled their eyes. I asked why. they told me that it is considered rude to do that...almost an insult from the Polynesian point of view. I didn't ask why tho. I guess I should have.

I think it is misspelling words, not misspelling words wrong, that would be a double negative. Are you sure you didn't sleep in grammar class.

All these years I could have sworn there was an A in Akershus. Oh, well, must be the German in me...

I used to see someone on another board who constantly used the wrong "too" in her posts. "I'm goint too WDW in a month. When I get there I'm going too eat at CP. I'm not going too Universal." The worst part was, she was a high school teacher! You would think that a teacher would know the rules of to, too, and two.

Correct usage: "I'm goint to WDW. I'm leaving in two weeks. My family is going, too."

Poor, poor babies! I wish that was all I had to concern myself with. Since The "Polynesian" is not in Hawaii, is not owned and operated by anyone from Hawaii it is a complete loss to me who or whom could possibly be offended by that. If someone doesn't like it when I say "Poly" then they need to stop listening. I would also be curious as to the reason why! That would be like Donald Trump being insulted when he is refered to as "The Donald". OK, maybe a bad example. You know what I mean.

Maybe not owned or operated by anyone in Hawaii, but there are folks working there from areas within Polynesia. Just because you don't feel it's an insult doesn't mean those who may be native to that area and overhearing something aren't offended. Evidently it is cultural. Why this huge need of people to shorten and abbreviate everything? Are we in such a hurry that we can't take the time to either speak or type something out the long way...especially if there is someone who 'may' be offended by the abbreviation? Yes, I agree...it's not a huge thing to me, and in the big picture of life it's probably very small, but if saying something the 'long way' makes someone else more comfortable, what's the harm?

When I booked my PS the CM pronounced it "le say-yay". Your guess is as good as mine as to whether that's correct or not. My limited knowledge of French makes me think the "ier" at the end must be "ay" or "yay". "The hotel", written in French would l'hotel I think, and it would be pronounced "lo-tel". So, I could see "le sell-yay" as being correct.
