I'm the prom sponsor this year, and I'm not going to have a garter ceremony like we've done every year in the past. My principal is backing me, but I was just curious if this was still done in other parts of the country or if it was ever done?

In case you're not familiar with it, basically all the girls get in a circle with their dates standing behind them back-to-back. The girls lift up their dress and remove their garter and hand it over to their date. The date then usually puts it on his arm for the rest of the night.

Never heard of it before, so I know its not done at any of the proms any of us have attended. Sounds interesting!

Never heard of it. East coast. I am glad we don't do it here.

Yick! Never heard of it and it doesn't sound at all appropriate for a high school activity. Stand your ground.

I have never heard of that, and I can also imagine that would not have gone over well with the adults in my hometown.

Never heard of anything like this, and I'm glad. Not appropriate for a high school prom. Good call!

Never heard of it, but it may relieve the stress for some girls of how it is going to come off later or if they should wear one/if their date will be looking for one, etc.

Never heard of it. Wouldn't want my DDs participating. Stand your ground.

Not done here or where and when I grew up.

The prom easily has 800 to 1,000 kids I can't imagine getting them in a circle!!

And so many kids go in groups now, without specific dates would be a lot of non participating.

I have never heard of such a thing in Texas! I would not have participated at all when I was in high school because I went alone one year and with a friend the next.

Really good point about the groups!

I not only never heard of it, but never heard of anyone wearing a garter under a prom dress? That's a tradition that should be left for weddings IMO

Never heard of it either..... did this start off as some kind of commitment ceremony years ago?

We all had garters under our prom dresses 20+ years ago. They were presented to your date at the end of the evening, after you took it off and gave it to your date.

The guys usually put them on their rearview mirrors. :)

A ceremony to do it in front of everyone? Nope, wouldn't have been the least bit interested in that.
