Prom Dresses

Well the good news is that we have an appointment with The Princess Boutique on Saturday. This is a Beccas closet type deal where girls have a chance to get a gown who cannot afford one. We are very late in the day---I dont know what will be left but I am prayerful that she will see something special that fits. I am grateful for the opportunity to check it out and see, no matter how it turns out :) We are going to see what comes along this Saturday, we have put the word out to lots of friends that we are looking, we will continue to scour the consignment shops, and watch for a great deal. I have faith that it will all turn out okay. Thanks for all the suggestions!

My daughter found a very pretty dress for her sophmore social last year at Sears and they had a great selection of prom / social dresses all at reasonable prices. We had the best luck at Sears.

We've also had great luck at Sears.

I'm dress poor! :rotfl2: Just this year alone I am on my fourth dress for my daughter. ( Fly Fling, Cotillion, and Winter Ball) Only one was less than $50, and that was on sale, the rest were into the hundreds. I'm stupid, I know. I'm scrambling trying to sell those to get some money back for prom. I have sold one so far. I have two on eBay right now, and if you are looking they have some recent dresses on there that i have seen in some stores, but most are not very cheap.

I didn't think that she would go to prom this year because she is a freshman, but she was asked by a jr. The girls here have set the bar high. I was lucky to find her a dress for less than $400 this time.

The thing is, I know how to bargain shop. There are several places doing consignment so you could check there. Ask on Facebook, or word of mouth to other moms.

I was talking to a mother the other day who ordered three dresses from a popular online web sight. She has twins, and when the dresses came in the size was off so she went to return them. They wouldn't take them back.
I have never ordered on line because I'm scared of this happening.

She also said that there were twin girls at her daughters school who paid over$900. each for a dress. NO WAY!

Tidebuy.com, Tbdress.com, Jenjenhouse.com, and Dressbraw.com are all great sites for wedding and prom dresses at DEEP discounts. My oldest DD found her prom dress in a small specialty store for $420. We went home and located the exact same dress on tidebuy.com for less than $100. Good luck! :goodvibes

Jenjenhouse was the place that the woman I spoke to had trouble with.

Thats right! Once you have found the perfect dress, get the style number and the designer and shop it online. Also check eBay. There are tons on there! You need to try on dresses by that designer first though to see if they run true to size.

Both my dresses were from Macy's- the more expensive one was $175, but I split the cost with my mom.

If you don't find anything at your appointment, I definitely recommend Deb- they have some dresses under $100. I was just in there with my sister and ours had some nice ones. Ross is another place to check- they often have really reasonably priced formal dresses. I got a really pretty prom dress for $20 there a few years ago, and I've seen some nice ones there recently.

My sister's friends borrow a lot- I think all of them have worn at least one of our formal dresses, and one of them has worn one of our dresses to every single formal dance her school has had. I had 3 dances a year for 4 years, plus some college formals and some cheap clearance dresses from Ross and Deb that I've worn for various things, and my other sister has a variety of dresses as well, so her friends like to refer to it as shopping in our closet, lol.

Definitely ask around about borrowing dresses- I know I, for one, love lending my dresses out, as do many of my friends!

fb yard sale sites? Not familiar with that. Do I search on FB?

I was going to suggest local garage sale sites on Facebook as well. There are quite a few different pages for my area and I have been seeing a bunch of very pretty prom style dresses posted lately and mostly low prices.

Try searching for the term garage sale along with a local town/city, county, etc name. We have ones under a few different descriptions like my local village, then one using the name of our county, another using a city about 15 minutes away, and then another that uses a combo of 2 or 3 towns together.

Good luck!!

It's also consignment sale time. We have one big one every spring and fall. I dropped soe things off tonight and I noticed some dresses.

There are SO MANY online sites --all with different names who say the will custom make your dress for about 1/3 the cost of the prom shops. BUYER BEWARE These are foreign sweat shops masquerading as legitimate options for a better deal on the dress you want. Two of DD's close friends got totally screwed last year by these "bargains" They shelled out 150. or so and the dresses came in the wrong size, rally cheap fabrics, and of course no one in China would return a call or take the dress back. They ended up having to buy another dress last minute and spending much more than they wanted to.
:sad1:

Seconding Deb Shops. Our store also keeps track of who buys what dress so you know if you are copying someone else. My daughter just got a dress here for a sweet 16 and it was only $40! (*short dress though but cute!)

There is a local shop around here that does the dresses up big. They are about $200 that doesn't seem so terrible. I am HOPING that the twins we know that will graduate this year might have a dress to pass down that will be acceptable to dd.

Do you have a Ross or TJ Maxx nearby? Not a huge selection, but the inventory changes frequently.

The vast majority of dresses that are costing hundreds of dollars in the US are also made in foreign sweatshops. They are just sweatshops owned or run for US based companies.

A good point. Mine is just that if I buy it in a local shop they will make sure I get what I pay for, and I have recourse if they don't. Buying online can just be super risky

Last year we found my daughters dress on Kohls.com.
I remember getting an email from them that they carried dresses for prom.

What about vintage? Sites like etsy.com or at local stores who specialize in vintage clothing. Older pieces are made of much better fabrics with much better construction methods and she'll get the "Unique" look she wants.

Try Camile LaVie / Group USA website. Not sure if there is a store location near you but we went into one in Michigan and the selection was huge at all prices.. I am pretty sure you can also buy some online

If you have any outlet centers near you try there. One near us has a formalwear store with decent selection

We have bought my daughter 2 formals in the last 6 months. We got both at the BCBG outlet at a local Premium Outlet Center (one near Pittsburgh the other in Michigan City) . The first was a $499 dress we purchased for $109 (beautifully constructed!) and the second was a $199 dress that we got for $49.

The outlet store is just filled with tons of fun and beautiful dresses.

Good Luck!

OP- Sorry I didn't read all the previous posts so I apologize in advance if someone has commented on China prom dresses.

My niece is a HS junior and just went thru the gown fiasco last month. My sister was disgusted by the cost of gowns and accessories. It was mandatory that the girls where long dresses for their affair, and it seemed like all the stores sold were short ones. The few long ones were either too pricey or totally inappropriate for a 16 yr old to wear.

The "thing" was to order from China. I have to say they didn't do badly at all. A few of my niece's friends were happy with what they ordered too.

A few words of caution: ALLOW PLENTY OF TIME. Weeks if you can manage it. Also, use a credit card you can cancel the order with if things don't go well. Be prepared to do some minor alterations such as hemming. Make sure you know what the dress looks like from ALL sides. Some pics don't show the back and then you're surprised to find it plunging or inappropriate. Don't count on quality materials

All in all for the amount of time the dress was worn, and the fact that she will never use it again it worked out well for my niece. She looked amazing.

Good luck.:thumbsup2

Last year my daughter was a senior and we got her dress at a bridal store. She wanted a dress that resembled belle's. It was 225.

I was one of those girls who shelled out around $500 for my junior prom dress. My parents paid up to $150, and the rest was on me to pay, but I had a part-time job and saved money for months. I have always been the type of girl who loves the big poofy ball gowns, especially when they're covered in sequins. And I had exactly that for my junior prom: a dress so poofy it didn't really fit in my boyfriend's car, completely covered in sequins, and I loved every second of it. I still wish I had an occasion to wear that dress again.
My senior year, my dad announced that I was not going to be allowed to spend more than $100 of my own money on a dress, which, when combined with the $150 he and my mom paid, left me with $250 for a dress. I ended up with one off Ebay, which was nice and reasonably pretty, but ultimately I liked my junior prom dress a lot more and still wish I had bought the dress I wanted that year instead of the dress I "settled" for. I will add that I had a part-time job at the time (and therefore my own money to spend on a dress), and I currently hold two part-time jobs, am a full-time university student, and am putting myself through college...and I still wish I had bought a dress that I really loved, even though that would have set me back a lot more money. At the time, I looked at all the online Chinese vendors and debated for weeks ordering from one of them, but I was too afraid of getting screwed over by one of them. My senior year in high school, I would have agreed with you one hundred percent...

And then. My sister decided as a sophomore in high school this year that she wanted to go to homecoming, and she needed a short dress. She wasn't happy with the department store options, and she didn't want to spend much money, so she ignored my repeated warnings about the online Chinese vendors and went to www.tidebuy.com. She ordered a gorgeous dress from them, got it in the color she wanted made to her measurements, and waited to see if it turned out. And boy did it ever! When the dress arrived, it looked exactly like the picture, except in a different color, and she looked fabulous in it! It was well-made, fit her perfectly, arrived well before it was estimated at. There was a decent return policy on the dress, so if there had been a problem she could have returned it, but with a dress as gorgeous as hers, she didn't need to. If I can find pics of the original dress she ordered and her in her dress (as the older sister, I wasn't allowed to take any pictures ;) ), I will post them so you can see how well it turned out.
I know that these vendors don't always work out. Sometimes they really screw things up for people, and not all of them can be trusted. But many girls in our area order from Tidebuy, and Tidebuy always seems to come through for them. I know if I ever got to go to a prom again, I'd order from them in a heartbeat.
Here's the link if you want to give them a try: http://www.tidebuy.com/c/Prom-Dresses-4354/
Your mileage may vary with them, but in my experience they've been a good company.
