So I was wondering if any of you have had problems with going to target and buying gift cards?

I just left target and was originally planing on buying $2500 worth of gift cards but was only allowed $1000 after having to argue with the "lead" about their "policy" that I can't buy more then $500 at a time. Ok fine ill buy $500 my wife $500 and my kids each $500, nope wouldn't have it now whats worse is she had already scanned my 5% off coupon so now I can't go to other targets because they are closed and I can't come back tomorrow because my coupon will be expired. All because its "suspicious" that someone would buy so many.

Ugh well I guess I'll have to email and call target and see if I can get a replacement 5% coupon since I know that's not their policy

Nope. Bought $3500 last year and the only problem is that my Red Card was flagged for fraud so it took an hour on the phone to get it taken care of. This year I did $1000 one day (May i think) and another $1300 (July) without any problems.

Biggest suggestion is to go to the young male cashiers that don't question anything.

I have the Red Card CC. Over the last 2 nights I bought $1000 per night all in one transaction. Over all my trips I have gotten around 8k in GC's thru my DW and my Red Card CC. I just wish they would carry larger than $50 GC, I get sick of the typing on DCL web site....3 at a time...

I bring them with me to coincerge and they just zip them through like a credit card.

Which Target is this?

Some Targets are more strict than others for no reason other than the manager is an $&%&#.

We have 3 Targets around my house, and 2 of them make up arbitrary rules like this (no Ecoupons, no $10 off $50 for gift cards, no 5% off for gift cards). We just avoid the "bad" Targets and I honestly don't argue with them because I don't want to raise attention to this whole gift card thing any more than the INTERNET already has :lmao:

BTW I don't know if you know the #1 Rule of Slickdeals --- but the #1 rule is PLEASE DON'T CALL. Every good deal that's out there eventually comes to an end... and it ends faster when people start calling.

Companys are required to have a money laundering policy and they can sell more than $1000 but are required to kept records with alot of info about who is buying them.

Earlier this year I bought $2500 in gift cards. I was using my Red Card for 5% and a 5% pharmacy coupon. They refused. We called and they said since I did not have a long history with my Red Card use they wouldn't allow that large of purchase. The issue was, the Target was not convenient for us, so we didn't go there very often. We have since moved and we are much closer and use it more now.

The solution - After spending 15 minutes on the phone at the checkout, the manager and the person on the phone agreed to let me use my bank's debit card and still allow me to the 5% Red Card discount. So, I still got my 10% off.

Over the next 2 1/2 months, I made 3 more gift card purchases ranging from $500 to $800 each time.

My total purchase of gift cards in 2 1/2 months... $4200. All with 5% off Red Card and 5% off pharmacy coupon.

They were very nice and worked with me, so for that I was very thankful.

And I plan on one more $500 purchase of gift cards prior to our next cruise in 60 days, for onboard purchases and our deposit when we book our next cruise.

This. I don't know about the limit, but if I were the cashier or manager this would be my first thought. Especially if the card didn't have much history, I would imagine a fraud scam too.

They don't know it is just the crazy Disers! :):dance3:

No worries I won't call in, I was just soooo frustrated last night. The good thing is my cruise is paid off and this was just for onboard credit so I can wait till I get another 5% off pharmacy coupon which should be soon fingers crossed

I know the RedCard gives 5%....where do you get the extra 5% coupon? In the mail? paper? other? That would be an added incentive!:thumbsup2

Anyone taking a transaction of $10,000 or more in CASH has to report it. It's not illegal to accept the cash, you just have to fill out paperwork. Retailers would not know how to do this, so they set limits well below that amount. Banks barely know how to do it! $10,000 is really such a small amount today compared to when the limit was set, but on the other hand not many people use cash anymore so even $1000 in cash seems like a lot.

It used to be that drug money was laundered through buying money orders. Gift cards are now in that stream, so merchants do worry about anyone buying large amounts of gift cards, especially Visa or MC cards.

Every time you get 5 prescriptions filled on your pharmacy rewards account, they mail you a 5% off coupon. The 5% is for an entire day's worth of purchases. When they send it to you, it has an expiry date and they usually give you a month to 6 weeks to use it.

The second 5% off is off the already discounted 5%, so instead of 10% off, it's actually 9.75% off... but who's counting...

Buy $50 Disney Card -5% off is $47.50. Another 5% off is $45.125 - or $45.13.

It does add up if you can buy a lot at once.

The only issue I'd be worried about would that they change their designation of Disney Gift Cards. Right now, they are considered Merchandise Cards and therefore are eligible for the 5% deals and the $10 for $50 purchases they have occasionally. Their computer would allow it, if they'd just scan it in.

Not sure if this information is accurate. I was told at our Target the debit card has a limit but not the credit card. That is unless your credit card is close to the credit limit. Again not sure if this is accurate or one of those "WDW "bus driver" type comments.;)

What part were you questioning?

I was told by the person on the phone when I was at the checkout, there is no limit to the debit cards, at least no hard and fast limit. It's all based on your spending history. The more you spend and the more often you have transactions with no issues with it clearing your bank, the higher the "limit" goes.

She's the one who authorized me using bank's debit card but still gave me my Red Card discount.

That information may or may not be accurate, but it came straight from the debit card payment division, not from a cashier or store manager.

Our debit red card had a $500 limit to start. Some cashiers claimed it was just until we had a history, others said it was imposed by our bank. I'm not sure which it is, but since we got it we've just assumed the limit is still there. Since we break it up its never been an issue but it sure would be nice to just save the money and go get it all at once...! :rolleyes1

I had a similar situation happen, where I couldn't use my debit card red card on a large purchase, right after I got it, and got a similar explanation. I had just got it and went to buy myself an iPad. Even though it is linked to your bank card, the money does not pull automatically from your bank like a true debit card. It actually processes more like a credit card, so Target has no idea if you really have the money in your account. So until you build up a history with your card, they limit you to smaller transactions initially.

After using my card for a while, I started buying the GC's, usually $500 at a time. I wasn't sure if anyone would try to stop me, so figured I would stick with that. The last 2 trips in, I bought $1000. Neither time was I prevented from buying them, but both cashiers did look at me really funny. They even asked to confirm that I really wanted to buy them...and I said of course, I was going on a Disney Cruise!

The last two times for me... they just said "Someone's going on a nice trip!" and laughed... :thumbsup2

It was the first time that I had $2500 that I really explained what I was doing...they loved it and said that's was a fantastic idea.

Sort of off topic, but I was wondering if the employees got their discount in addition to a Redcard (assuming they have one). I'm guessing they get 5% off all the time for being an employee.

I wish I could get one of those 5% pharmacy coupons, but I don't have 5 prescriptions. :sad1:

Yes, they get another 10% off with their employee discount card.
