Problem with Sunburns

I don't know what's up with me lately, but I keep getting sunburned when nobody else does! :confused3 I know that I burned easily when I was pregnant, but I'm not sure if that should continue now while I'm nursing. So...several days ago, the kids and I spent some time outside. None of us had sunscreen on that day and I was the only one to get burned (it was only a slight burn, though). Yesterday we spent a few hours outside and we all wore the same Blue Lizard sunblock (SPF 30 for babies/sensitive skin). I got pretty burnt, while everyone else was fine. Does anyone have any suggestions or experience with this? I was really hoping the Blue Lizard stuff would work well, since it doesn't have any harsh chemicals in it. I suppose I'll need a higher SPF or I'll just have to apply the stuff more often? I could have a huge problem at WDW if I don't figure out what to do now!!

Maybe you're allergic to the sun? Maybe brought on by pregnancy horomones?

Call your DR. You wouldn't want to suffer all summer long.

There is also clothing available that acts like sunscreen. Check out Coolibar (there are others out there) for ideas.

The recommended amount of sunscreen (to get the SPF that is on the bottle) is approx one sixth of a bottle per application

Could work out pretty expensive considering you're supposed to reapply every 2 hours :scared1:

Are you on any medications? A lot of them cause a sensitivity to the sun.

Are you serious?!! I wouldn't have guessed that! The stuff did work well for the kids, though, which is why I was wondering why I kept getting burned and no one else did. I guess I'll have to just get another kind -- one that will work and be more affordable.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I've looked into this, but I just don't think I can afford to buy anymore extra clothes. I am SO uncomfortable in hot weather that I'd rather wear more sunscreen than be more covered up, you know? Thanks for the tip, though!

I hadn't thought of that. I think I might try another sunscreen before I go to see my doctor, though. I actually have an appt set for next week anyway, so I'll see what she thinks. Thanks!

I got the worst sunburns when I was on the pill and when I was pregnant with DS. When I was pregnant I got sun poisoning and it was so itchy that I had to slather myself with lotion all day long so it wouldn't dry out! It was horrible but it never happened again. Could be hormones.

That's what I'm thinking, too. Hormones seem to cause me LOTS of problems these days! :(

Try a different sunscreen. Neutrogena sunscreens are great - try the Ultrasheer Dry Touch. (I also love their spray-on sunscreen!) It comes in SPFs of 70 and 80 now - it always gets written up as one of the best sunscreens in women's magazines. Make sure you use plenty - you need to use at least one shot-glass-full each time you apply, and reapply often (every couple of hours). From everything I have read, most people do not apply enough sunscreen to get the SPF that's listed on the bottle - if you don't apply enough, an SPF rating of 30 ends up being more like a 15 or a 10.

It may just be that you have a different complexion than your other family members, and burn more easily.

Oh, and be sure to wear a hat with a large brim!

I just bought the Neutrogena spray in SPF 70 yesterday to try out (it was the highest SPF I could find). So, hopefully that will work for me. Regarding me having a different complexion than my family, I actually haven't noticed that at all in the past. My DH tans really easily and only 1 out of our 4 kids has gotten that from him -- the rest of the kids take after me! This burning easily thing is new for me, which is why I'm a bit nervous for our trip. :worried: Once my burn is gone, I'll try out the new sunscreen and see what happens...
