I have what is basically a brand new Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6G AF lens. I've only used it a few times, so far just for practice.
I've kept it with the lens cap and cover on, in a plastic sealed bag.

Today I noticed that it's making a slight grinding noise when zooming in and out. It feels like something inside is "catching".

Anyone ever had this problem, or know what the cause might be?

Is it best to send it back to Nikon to have repaired if necessary, or a local authorized dealer? I have the receipt and it is still on warranty.

Thanks in advance!!!

If it's brand new, I would take it back to the store you made the purchase.

If they can't/won't help you, then I'd go with Nikon and have it warranty repaired.

Well, I'm an idiot who bought it through Amazon. :sad2:

Not an idiot! :)
Just call them. You'd be surprised about how helpful they can be.

How long ago did you buy it. Amazon has a very good return policy. Send it back saying it's defective. Then when the refund goes though, buy another copy.

I bought it on September 2nd. It was a store that sold through Amazon, does that make a difference?

If it was sold by another store but through Amazon, you will have to adhere to the 3rd party store's return policy if I'm not mistaken. If, however, it works out that they will not help you, don't hesitate to send it in to Nikon for warranty service. I had a similar problem with my 70-300VR about 2 years ago. I sent it to Nikon for repair and had no issues and the turn around time was not bad at all......maybe 2 weeks.

I contacted Nikon, and since it's so new, they had me send it to them. Shipped it off today. I hope it doesn't take too long to get it back again.
