Priscilla the new puppy needs a miracle

We're not trying to be mean. But when somebody we've never seen before comes here with a sob story and posts a website with a fundraising link in flagrant violations of the rules, your radar can't help but go off. I don't see anything wrong with voicing those concerns because I would hate for some kindhearted soul on the site to get taken in by a scam. If this is legit, I feel sorry for her, but I don't think that asking people on a board she's never really been to for advice (or donations) is the way to go. There's no connection to this board. Why here? Why now?

She joined in 2009. She hasn't had many posts, but I've seen her here before. I also didn't see anything asking for money. :confused3

It just doesn't seem like she has an established connection, know what I mean? There are a couple of sites I have posted on a few times but never stayed around long enough to establish a connection. It would be weird for me to go to one of those where basically everybody is a "stranger" and ask for help of this nature. I would be more likely to do that here or at a site where I have established that connection with the other posters. And the website linked to in the original post was asking for donations. That is why it definitely seemed odd. I hope that the poster is on the up and up, but it's hard not to be suspicious. There are a lot of scam artists out there.

I used to moderate a board that has since gone away. Like a lot of boards, we had our fair share of scam artists that we had to yank. One thing we looked for was people who had only a few posts coming to us with a story and then a link to a website that took donations. Perhaps that has made me a bit cynical.

I understand. :flower3:

I have a friend who moderates a web site and wow, the stuff she has to deal with!

OP, please update us about your little dog when you have news about the surgery. I hope everything goes well.

she has 20 posts, 5 or so are on this thread, and she joined a year and a half ago, and you remember seeing her here before. dang, you are good.

Well, she posted recently in a thread about tampons and TSS, which is one of my "soapbox" issues, since there was a 12 year old who died here from it a few years ago because she wore a tampon too long. My own DD is 12, so it stuck with me.

The other reason I remember her is not really very nice, but I use all kinds of odd associations to remember posters. I do NOT mean it as a slam against the OP. :flower3: I remember "bubbles" and all those ellipses. I'm not trying to be rude, but it does sometimes make the post hard to read. I'm guilty of overusing them sometimes myself, so I'm not trying to be a grammar nazi. :hippie: But her posts are quite distinctive. Maybe I remember them since it's something I'm trying to improve about myself.

I, also, never saw her ONCE ask for money. She even went as far as to take the link down when she realized the connection. HOW is that asking for money, where there is no where on this thread to give her money?!

Anywho--OP. I am very sorry this is happening to your DD. I know depression is really hard, especially with a LD and teenage hormones on top of it. I've also had many doctors tell me personally having a pet takes care of these issues, so having the puppy as "therapy" isn't that far fetched.

Also--having a pet and taking care of it properly doesn't mean you have 3-5k in the bank....some people have trouble getting that together when their KIDS are sick.....so again, I don't find that far fetched.

OP--please keep us posted. I personally can't contribute financially, but I've found emotional support is always valuable, especially when a child like your DD is involved. You are all in my thoughts (Cilla too! <3). Can you post a pic of the pup?

Even when I posted, I saw an edit to the first post, stating they were sorry for the link. So apparently she's not after any one's money here. And I don't find it all that strange that the daughter would ask for help from some friends through the internet.

Even if your wanky meter is going off, there's no need to bash the person, just either not post or say your sorry.

It took quite a few phone calls, telling friends, passing the word around, about needing a cheaper vet for my dog. Through that, I was able to find out about the Lakeland ASPCA, I would have never thought to go out way out there for help.

Dissent and bashing are not the same thing. Every post I saw that expressed doubt still offered advice. I did not see anybody trying to be snarky or mean. When you post on the internet, you have to be prepared for a wide variety of opinions. You have to realize that not everybody is going to agree with you. If you are not prepared for the responses- don't post.

Unfortunately there are those out there who will try to take advantage of the generosity of others. Just because somebody is suspicious and admits to their misgivings, it does not mean that they are bashing. Some of us have just learned the hard way that you cannot always take things at face value.

I have actually been on the dis for many years (since 2002)...I use to post under bubbleprincessmom (which you can search and verify, some of my posts include talking about my husbands deployment, the divorce, Sarah winning an essay contest and my son joining the Navy, I even talk about having lost my son) but for some reason or another switched to bubblemom, probably when I switched emails or lost my password, just re registered. I do lurk and read alot get alot of budget advise on the budget boards, live vicariously through the cruisers etc. I am currently off work so have time again to post, thus the uptick if you will in posting.
I pulled the link within MINUTES of realizing it was taboo. Yes my daughter has a blog that she is using to try and fund raise for her puppy...the link is there for her friends and family who are far away. This gave her hope.
To the DISer who took it upon themselves to comment on her blog about her being disgusting and that these things didn't happen to her (you can google her fathers name and find articles from his deployment for instance, there are even on line photos of her at mountain home air force base operation purple, a camp for kids who have had family deployed) well as my mama always said "boo ee on you"...you made a kid cry are you proud of yourself .I was the one who was wrong to post the link NOT HER!! Take it up with me through PM's!! Don't take it out on her!! She is a kind hearted sweet heart who has had more than most people could bear happen to her...life happens and its not always good!! She has bounced back and is a loving, kind, compassionate girl that doesn't smoke/do drugs/talk back and won't be on the next episode of teen moms!!! She believes that the bell ringers at Christmas time are helping angels get their wings...so she drops her change into every bucket she saw!! She believes in the good in people as do I. I am grateful for the positive comments and advise that I took to heart and worked on IMMEDIATELY! Even though this post has taken a nasty turn, I am still glad I did because without it I wouldn't have known that there were other avenues to pursue.
We have another dog that IS a rescue dog, we also have "doggy health" insurance on him if something happens to him. We had only had Priscilla for a few days so hadn't had time to get her a policy and now this is "pre existing" and can't be covered.
Sarah was heart broken by the comment left on her blog, that anyone would think poorly of her and think she was a thief, thats why she posted the estimate from the vet, and to the blog commenter that the estimate was fake...go ahead and call the vet his numbers on the bill!!! She had no idea that I had posted on the dis she thought that the only ones seeing her blog were our friends and family. I am the one responsible I am the guilty party I made a mistake that I fixed right away...take it up with me in PM's NOT on her blog!!!!

I'm very sorry for your DD, you, and your poor little puppy. Hope all works out well for all of you!

Wow, I am shocked that someone would post something so cruel on a child's blog. :sad1:

I hope you can remove the comments.

I am so sorry that happened to your daughter. I sincerely hope that the pup gets better and I'm so sorry for the inconsiderate message sent to your daughter.
That being said, I think you posted way too much info. I think that blog is a wonderful thing that your daughter is doing, but it really should be set to private or have some kind of password. It is unfortunate, but not everyone on the net is considerate and kind, and when you post this kind of stuff you are opening up yourself and your family to the world (literally).
I tell this to my friends and family all the time because I am super paranoid about info on the net.
Once again, so sorry for the pup and the rude comment on your daughter's blog...

I would check in to pet health insurance even with a pre-existing condition. You might pay a higher premium, but still be able to have the surgery covered. A friend of mine just had her puppy diagnosed with a condition where he was born with no ball joint in his leg. His surgery will be $1600. The vet told her to contact a pet health ins. and see what they said. She did, and all they asked was for the vet's office to fax them the name of the diagnosis. She was able to get the insurance for him, and the surgery will be covered. The premium is just $15 more per month than if he didn't have the pre-existing condition.

Can't hurt to check in to it. Good luck!
