10-26-03 (Part 3) – Look! It’s a BOY Bat!! <Animal Kingdom>

So we get back on the train, with better success, and now we are starving. I wanted to try Flame Tree this time and was not disappointed. They are MUCH better than Tuskers with their salt laden veggies. The pulled pork sandwich that we both had was super! I only hit one plant parking the cart of doom and used this opportunity to limp up to a table since the ones at ground level were all full. Now if I had not had the use of my legs in some capacity, that would have sucked.

After a relaxing lunch we are off to Kali River Rapids. They have a new rule that you have to wear your shoes. OK, I have this weird phobia. I hate getting my feet dirty, I ate walking in wet squishy shoes or wearing wet socks. It makes me nuts. So since I can’t take my shoes off, which would have been a chore anyway with the limpy ankle, I came prepared. 2 plastic grocery bags. Tigger pretended he didn’t know me,

OK, I’m a huge dork with bags on my feet but they will be dry! Now the 2 previous times I went I never got that wet. I told everyone that. Tigger is now bouncing around, yelling that I jinxed it. He was trying to explain to me the mystical man thing known in Baseball as Streaks and how if you have a streak going you never talk about the streak or you’ll jinx it. I told him “Honey, you are talking about men who will never change their underwear if they think its lucky.”

I ignore him, tie the plastic bags around my shoes and off we go! I am sitting next to this nice lady. Most of the men are on the other side. Since the raft is free floating, when it spins and goes downhill usually the heaver side is the one that is headed down. I told the lady that. Tigger starts yelling about the man jinx thing again. I ignore him. I should have listened to the Man Mystery. I mocked it and I paid.

The first small dip I get some splash but it wasn’t bad. We lined up for the big hill and guess who is facing backwards? Yup! Me and the nice lady who trusted me. Did I mention she had a little daughter? No? Well she did. We all got soaked as a wall of water came over the boat, hit us on the head and slid under my rear end. Tigger is laughing his tail off.

I hate him. I am now wet. I look like a drowned rat. This is how cats feel, except Tigers who love water. Which may be why Tigger doesn’t care. I squeeze out my shorts as best as I can while I’m walking. On the up side, at least the plastic bags kept my shoes and socks dry.

We then stopped for the bird show. It was great as always but they didn’t have my favorite bird. It is the one that bashes the living tar out of a rubber lizard. It is the funniest thing I ever saw and they didn’t have him in the show. Humph. Tigger and I get into a poke fight over Pal Mickey. He keeps telling me that only women like “the bossy little rat that won’t shut up” and if any couple has one and the man is carrying it – it was HER idea to buy it.

Well in front of us are a couple with a Pal Mickey. I ask them who’s idea it was to buy him. It was hers. She LOVES Pal Mickey. The long suffering husband/SO has that “I hate the bossy little rat but won’t say that out loud or there will be no lovin tonight” expression. He and Tigger exchange sympathetic looks. I try to carry Pal Mickey myself but have now discovered that his belt clip is AWOL. Wonderful. Another reason to hate myself for forgetting the drink leash.

I know, I know, I could buy another one but I am at a loss drink wise in WDW. I don’t drink sodas (Atkins) and the water they sell is Dasani which I REFUSE to drink since it is bottled in Riverside, CA. It is just nasty, poison LA water that they ran through a few paper towels or something. HEY! I saw Erin Brockovich. I lived in LA for 13 years. I KNOW what evil lurks in their water and unless Jesus Christ comes back to Earth and cleanses it himself, I’m not drinking it.

Next we toodle over to the Maharaja Jungle Trek so Tigger could look at Tigers. He loves Tigers. He loves Tigger. He plays with live tiger cubs for fun. So we look at Tigers. Tigers are really great. He is like a little kid. I think he would take one home if we had enough room. I tell him to remember poor Roy in the hospital and he loved and treated those cats like his own kids. They still have big teeth and claws and even if they didn’t mean it… well…..poor Roy.

Then we look at bats. Technically they are Malaysian Flying Foxes. They are very large bats that look like foxes with wings. Kinda cute actually. Well here is where the theme of this vacation starts. There is a large bat hanging from his branch. Since bats are nocturnal feeders, they are not very active during the day. This one decided to stretch and….ummm….Gee… that is a BOY bat. Yup, sure is and boy is he an impressive specimen of bat manhood. And now its time for morning grooming. Someone asks why the bat is licking himself. I quickly come back with “Because he can”. Everyone looks at the limpy gal in the scooter.

Hey! Like I’m the one licking myself in public! I just answered a question. I tried not to run over too many toes beating a hasty retreat. Tigger pretends not to know me. I think that is another running theme.

Next it is off to the Bug Show under The Tree of Life. I terrorize more small children as I try to negotiate the line in the cart of doom. Tigger had never seen this show. They park us in the back and I was afraid he wouldn’t get the full effect but he loved the show. It especially freaked him out when the bugs crawl under your butt at the end. Well, score one more for good ride experience.

We decide that we can ride Dinosaur (formerly Countdown to Extinction) before heading back to the hotel for a quick swim before dinner. As I take the cart of doom into the building, I discover first hand that the turning clearance is not what it should be. I get through the snakey little lines in one piece. We enter the loading area when I run into turning issues. I know.. DANGER! DANGER WILL ROBINSON. There is now a 4” chunk of drywall missing from the Dinosaur! Loading area due to a small cart collision. The other men in the line are laughing their hind ends off. I gather my shreds of dignity and ride this stupid ride.

At the picture spot, I hold Pal Mickey up by Tiggers face. He never knows until we see our picture. See? That’ll show him! Did I mention that I also hit the elevator.

We are now exhausted and head back to the buses. We drop off the cart of doom before I injured too many people and I get my $10 deposit back. I don’t think I’m allowed to operate machinery again.

We headed back to the hotel to dress dinner and head over to Jiko.

If you ever get a chance to tour Animal Kingdom Lodge, do it. It is a beautiful property and the only one that I would take if Wilderness Lodge was booked. We had a wonderful dinner at Jiko (which retains its 3rd place overall rating this trip). We caught the Magic Kingdom bus and then took the boat back to Wilderness Lodge.

We get to the room and then I look down. Ummmm, I realize that I’ve had my fly open since after I used the Ladies Room after dinner. Walking around AKL, going through the gift shop, etc. and my fly was open. Note to self: glad I wore knickers. Going “commando” would have been bad. However, that was just the beginning.

It's just wrong. I'm doing my usual - selfishly reading and, more importantly, enjoying your trip reports when I realize that you have gotten no snaps, so here you go.
