Princess Half Marathon

I was going to suggest the exact same plan. I think 3 months is a reasonable amount of time to be able to build up your endurace to walk a 5k. The more time you have to train though, the less likely a chance you would have of injuring yourself.

BTW: I went from sitting on the couch myself, to walking 2 miles a day, to running the Disney marathon from Jan 06 --> Jan 07.

OK, Dave, that is the inspiration I need to hear. I started running the end of the summer and ran 3 5Ks in September / October. I keep thinking maybe, just maybe, I could handle a 10K if I work at it. I have done it a couple of times on the treadmill now, but that isn't the same as outdoors. I can't wait until all this ice melts so I can get back to training and pushing along again! You just took away a layer of doubt about whether this is doable. Thank you!

You can do it Leslie! I'm not sure that saying I would run a marathon in a year was the best way to do it. I ended up battling a lot of injuries over the year. However, I stuck with it and crossed the finish line. The WISH team really kept me going. :thumbsup2

Yeah, I can't quite think past a 10K. I'm not on to thinking about marathons yet. That can be a future goal. Baby steps.............

I was reading all the posts about people on the podcast running in the various races. I keep saying this is something I would love to do. It's doubtful this year (time and money factors) but I would love to do it at some point down the road. If I ever do I'll have to check in on the boards to see who else will be there. You just never know....

Any step is an important step. And they can be addictive. You go out, walk, run/walk or run a couple of 5k races, and you start thinking, "I can do a 10k." So your training routes become longer than the 5k races. Then you complete your first 10k, and then a couple more, and you find yourself thinking "I could finish the half at WDW. No problem." So you do that, with training routes longer than your 10k races. And then, after a couple half-marathons, you find yourself lacing up your shoes and training for the Mickey.

(And if you're really crazy, or the bug bites you really hard, someday, you cross the finish line at a marathon and say "I could have kept going." And you start looking at ultramarathons.)

I AM!!!! But in 2010 if they still have it! princess:

I need to loose 50 -60 lbs and i have decided in DEC to make the Princess half marathon my goal! :thumbsup2

I may also do the 10k in October.

I have never run before in my life so i gotta "learn to run" KWIM?

I'm right there with you Mandy. I don't know if it's the new year, or that a women from my DD's storytime at the library asked me if I was expecting (comeon! DD is ONLY 18 months :lmao:) but using the Princess 1/2 marathon as a goal for next year may be enough motivation to run for the first time in my life.

Leslie, if you can do a 10k on a treadmill, you can do it outside on the roads. Yes, your time may be different, but you can handle the distance. Go for it!!!

Also, don't forget, there is no one that says you have to RUN the entire distance.. Lots of us do a Run/Walk combo. That is how i am doing the 1/2 in March.. I am planning on walking 3 min. / Running 2.
Marathoning for Mortals book is excellent, there are nice training plans for walking, running and combos!

:rotfl: I am laughing WITH you!

I get asked all the time if i am pregnant again. It is the rudest thing to ask! I have just learned to say "No I am not pregnant, just fat! I guess I need to loose a little weight so we won't have this really awkward conversation next time we run into each other!"

:rotfl:

I have to say i have 4 kids and they are 3,4,5,6! The longest span between births for me WAS 18 month! I guess that's what makes people that know us wonder these days at my expanding waist line! :rolleyes2

Oh and my goal is for weight loss but also that i turn 30 in 2010 so i want to do a 1/2 BEFORE I turn 30!

That is good to know! I don't think i could run the whole thing! :thumbsup2

Good LUCK! :cheer2:

Mandy, I'm doing the same thing. I've never been a runner but getting to a healthy weight is one of my goals before I'm 30. I'm trying to get my BFF and Cousin to join me. they both laugh.

Money and training are whats keeping me from doing it this year, but If it goes well with the princess I'm thinking of doing the Disneyland one too.

My goal is to run the 1/2 before my 30th! I turn 30 in 2010 after the race!

You can also walk the entire 1/2. As long as you keep your pace up, you can get it done with fast walking. I can't make the Princess this year but I'm planning on the 1/2 in Jan 2010.

That's right SamSam. I was just getting at that no one should feel upset if they can't RUN the whole thing ;) I myself, am NOT a fast walker, and i am truly amazed at all those who can walk the entire thing and keep time up! I am just in awe, b/c i stink at it! LOL I need that lil' run time just to save my timing!

I can run a half without much problem, and I do okay through about mile 18 of a marathon. But I'll say this - while I am a quick walker, and I could walk 13 miles, I certainly wouldn't want to do so. I respect and admire everyone who is out there on the course, from the fastest to the slowest.

I heard (years ago) the following story:

At the end of a major marathon, a reporter managed to get the winner and the last person to cross the line together. The winner had already showered, changed, eaten, etc, while the last finisher was still sweaty, tired, and wrapped in the thermal blanket. The reporter asked "You finished this marathon in just over 7 hours, while this other runner finished it in just over 2 hours and fifteen minutes. What do you have to say to that?"

The final finisher looked at the winner in amazement and said "You could finish this race in 2 hours?"

And the winner looked at the last runner and, equally amazed, said "You were able to keep going for 7 hours?"

Point being, of course, that being out there longer doesn't mean it is easier. Often, it is worse: the sun is higher, the humidity worse, and the cheering crowds thinner. Aid stations can run low. But finishing under those conditions is no easy feat; and I think it ought to be applauded more.

Well said!! LOL That was a great story!

This gave me the warm fuzzy's!

:) I wish I could run more, but I'm a really slow runner.:rotfl: I'll occasionally run a little every now and then just to break things up a bit, but mostly I walk.

I loved the story! I admire everyone who is out there racing, whether it's walking, running or a combination of both.
