Princess 1/2 2013...anyone else???

I was just using Boston and NY as examples of two marathons with requirements :) I lived in Boston all my life until moving south and I ran several other races instead of the one in my city. It baffled my family who refused to come watch me.

I think the marathon training I use is 18 weeks long. I went from total couch potato who couldn't finish one mile when I started my very first training to someone who could run 10 miles without stopping a few months later. It was awesome. Except now I'm back at stage one couch potato (who occasionally waddles through an event) and trying to get back into it :)

PR: D'oh! Of course you were giving me examples, only I didn't realize it, cause I'm slow (kind of like my computer, lol).

I'm impressed--10 miles without stopping! You go! I hope to say that one day. Good luck in your training. :)

I've never had a cake from publix but man that sounds good. My friend jokingly said he was going to tie a margarita to my head and i'd have to chase after it and then it would be my reward for finishing the race

Keep up the good work!
Hahah! So cute - whatever motivates you :lmao:

Well we just might all have to get together and make sure you have your first slice of Publix cake. I've never had a better birthday cake. In fact, my daughter's birthday is coming up, and I can't wait to dig into her Rapunzel cake.
Thanks, Firecracker! This sounds goofy, but after you said that I felt that now I'm NOT doing this alone. I don't know you, but that was so sweet! I hope to see lots of you all in 2013!

we should do a meet after for a celebration for completing the marathon! great idea! and i would love some cake! :love: haha
I'll bring the cake! :cake:

Thanks. I found the program and reviewed it last night. I'm going to start it today, but I may have modify it until my doctor releases me. At least it will get me up and moving.

I'm in the south and the summers are brutal. If you've ever been to Disney in July or August, you know what I mean. 100* with 99% humidity can knock the wind out of you.
Glad you found the program.
I'm in FL about 2 hours north of the Mouse, so I know all about that humidity! I've got a brand new treadmill waiting for me at home to be put together. When the weather starts turning cold (sorry, northern folks!), and then again when it gets stupid hot, I'll be able to run inside.

Wow princessRhi GREAT GOAL!! Im joining in on that one too!! However for this year I think I will just concentrate on not being swept up! Possibly next year finish with a drink in hand!! Lol!!
Dreamer2012 - I'm with you! I just want to be able to finish without crawling across the finish line! :rotfl2:Fancy finishes can come later :thumbsup2

I created a 'bucket list' a few days ago. No, I'm not dying, but I'll be 40 in two years and there still is so much I haven't done--and a marathon (of any kind!) is one of them.
:welcome: I'm pretty new to this part of DIS, but as you can see, everyone here is very friendly!

I'm on my 4th week of my modified C25K program. I started out running 30 sec and walking 2 min. Now, I can run 1.5 minutes at a time. That may not sound like a lot, but for someone who struggled to run 30 sec and is now running 3x that, it's a serious accomplishment!

I can't even believe how far I've come even in such a short amount of time. I have so much more energy, and I find myself missing running on my days off. I never thought that was possible.

I need to do a better job of checking in here more often. Seems we are all off to a great start.

AmyGood luck getting the TM together. I have had one for almost six years now and I love mine. It is a great tool to have for days when you just can't get outside. How are you doing with your training? What day are you on?

CrystalWow you have made great progress in 4 weeks, you should be so excited. Running does become addictive and if I have to be addicted to something, what better.

Happy Mom How is your walking going? How long until you are released by your doctor? I have done the Komen 5K in the past, both local and the national one in DC. It is a great race so filled with inspiration.

Dreamer I don't know about a solo trip I think it would depend on finances and school schedules. But I would really love for my boys to be there. They watch me train and I think it is a really good thing for them to see me complete what I start, especially exercise wise.

TherinianLast year when DH and I trained for the Army 10 miler we used a half marathon training schedule put out by Fitbie. If you search Fitbie half marathon on Google it should pop up since I can't post links yet. It is a training plan for rookies and we found it pretty easy to follow. I am following one put out by a running coach at my local Lululemon store that I could post if anyone is interested. The thing I like about this one is it incorporates strength and speed work.

So I am on week three of my training and so far so good. My long run of last week was 6 miles on Sunday and I did it at a sub 11min pace. Last night DH and I hit the track for some speed work and I didn't feel like I was going to die at the end like I did last week.
On tap for the rest of this week is an easy 3 mile today, rest tomorrow, 2 miles on Saturday and 7 miles on Sunday.

Well, we got as far as getting the TM into the room it will live in! A friend came over with his truck. He took an old Tony Little Gazelle my mom had given me years ago, as well as a chest freezer we recently upgraded, so first we had to load those into his truck, take them to his house, move them into his house, then go to WM to get the TM! Whew, I'm tired just thinking about it!

By the time we got the TM from WM into my bedroom, I was beat! I got my workout for the day, just not the walk I was hoping for....

So I guess, I'm still at day 2. We'll probably roll the 15 minute walk into the 18 minute run/walk (day 2 and day 3) tonight to kill 2 birds and all that.

Thanks for checking in! The support on these boards are great :thumbsup2

Happy Sunday, everyone! I know probably most of you are prepping for the Super Bowl, but I thought I'd check in.

We (me, Hubs and the kiddo) were able to get the treadmill together in about 2 hours yesterday. It works great and I'm so glad to have it! That reminds me - does anyone know what the incline is for the Hill o Doom that goes by the Water Bridge / Contemporary, or for the overpasses? It would be nice to be able to train with an incline on the treadmill for those bad boys.

I've finished up my first week of training and today is the beginning of week 2! I timed myself today at the track, and was able to do a mile in 17:30. On the one hand, I know it's slow, but it's better than what I thought I'd be doing. On the other hand, it's not a good representation of my speed b/c I had to slow down to talk to DD a few times, had to dodge a few basketballs when I got near that area (I walk at our local middle school) and had to deal with a bout of coughing.

Overall, I'm satisfied with the 17:30. It's a good baseline from which to improve!:cool1:

Hope everyone has great parties tonight and that your favored team wins. I don't like sports, so I'll be having spaghetti and Publix cupcakes (to celebrate my 5th anniversary of quitting smoking) - not at the same time of course - and then relaxing in a nice warm shower!

I was scouring the internet, looking for info on Disney Marathons and was brought here. I know NOTHING about marathons, 1/2 marathons, family marathons, etc... so if someone can clue me in, please do! What's the difference and distance of each, where do they usually take place, and what are the typical requirements and registration fees for each?

I've gotta train for any marathon, for certain. I have a treadmill and while it may not be the best way to get training in, it's a start, right? Also, I'll probably be doing this solo, like many of you have stated. I won't lie... I'm scared to even get started! But great things tend to happen when someone takes those first steps--so I'd better give it a try!

Thanks in advance!

John Bingham said, "The miracle is not that I finished, but that I had the courage to start.

YOU CAN DO THIS! :thumbsup2

Well, I haven't been able to walk. This was a bad week. I was supposed to be released two weeks from this coming Wednesday, but I fell this week. In an effort to not hit my stomach, I managed to bang myself up pretty good. Not to mention I somehow hurt my stomach anyway. :sad2: Needless to say, I haven't been able to do much at all this week. :sad2:

I will be at the Susan G Komen one way or the other. My employer always has a tent so worse case senario, I'll just sit at the tent. A friend of mine said she would walk with me at my pace, and my MIL who is a nurse will be there so I'll have medical support if I need it! :lmao: :rotfl:

That's a great question! I hope someone has the answer, but it might be a question to ask on the 2012 Princess 1/2 thread. There are some vets over there who might now.

17:30 is better than where I'd be... with or without surgery! Just think how much you'll improve over the next year! :woohoo:

Congratulations on 5 smoke free years!! That's awesome! :cheer2: :cheer2:

~~~~~
I'm not into the Super Bowl either except for the commercials and half time - I don't even know who is playing. I did fix some fun foods though because I thought I the kids would enjoy it... sloppy joes, bbq lil' smokies, chips and cheese dip, apples and dip, and upside down pineapple cake. The 45 minutes in the kitchen wore me out and I've been sitting down since then! :rotfl:
Good luck with training, everyone!
Just wondering if anyone is staying off he property for the up comming Princess 1/2? we are staying at the sheraton Safari and hoping others may be also and we could get together to chat and get to the race on time together? Anyone interested?
HappyMom I am so sorry to hear about your fall. I hope you are on the mend soon. I am sure if you are cleared to participate in the Komen race there will be many different pace levels.
AmykayCongrats on the mile that is awesome. And 5 years smoke free is definitely something to celebrate. I don't know about the incline for the hills, would love to hear someone else's answer.
DreamerYou already know where you are staying next year.. Wow. We usually stay off property but at a Marriott.
Well didn't get in as much running as I had hoped. Did the easy 3 on Friday and did my long run of 7 miles on Sunday, so at least I got two out of the three in.
We have a large Super Bowl party each year and this year with the close game it ran late so took yesterday off to rest but back to running this week.
Up coming... 2012 or 2013? If 2012, there is a different 2012 thread. For 2013, I know I'm going to stay on property, just not sure which resort.
Awww... thanks! :goodvibes I went to the store this morning to pick up a couple birthday presents for some parties DS has this weekend, and am totally worn out. I really hope I'm up for Komen. :goodvibes My behind hurts from sitting and :happytv: and :surfweb: so much! I'm so ready to get moving!! :yay:
7 miles already!! Girl, you are going to be ready for a FULL marathon by June!! ;) Way to go! :cool1:
Regarding going solo: I took a solo trip a couple of years ago and had a great time. It was one of the only vacations where I returned completely ready to jump back into work and life. My take on going solo is that if you are comfortable enough to go to the mall on your own, then you can do Disney solo. A lot of people worry about what others will think of them if they are on their own, but think back to your past trips...have you ever noticed someone who was by themselves or thought twice about it? People are so wrapped up in their own trip that they don't care what you are doing. And even if they notice, how do they know that you aren't just doing this one ride on your own?
IMO, the Princess trip would be a great one to do solo because you are coming together with a large group for a common purpose (and you could even arrange to meet up with other people from this thread before or after the race) but you can also do the rest of your trip your own way. Don't let being solo stop you!
Solo tip: wear a t-shirt from your college or favorite sports team; it's a a great way to start a conversation. My sister was wearing her A&M shirt on Sunday when we watched the Voices of Liberty at Epcot. After the show one of the singers walked straight over to us and started talking to us.
Now that I'm back from Disney, it's time to start training again!
Anyone who has beat Plantar Fasciitis have any good shoe suggestions? I'm due for some new shoes, and just recently developed PF out of nowhere, so I'm hoping with new shoes, I can get back to my running! I have Asics Cumulus right now.
Karen- I don't have experience with PF, but after running in Asics for the past many years, I switched about 4 months ago to Brooks ghost. I get fit at a local running store and the guy told me they have better cushioning and a wider toe box. I have to say I love them so much more than any pair of Asics I had and there was no break in period or anything.
As for a solo trip I am not sure what we will do about that. My DH usually runs with me and if not he and my boys are usually on the course cheering me on. I think I would miss that.
HappyMom- How are you feeling, any progress?
How are others doing with their training plans?
This week is a recovery week in the plan I am following so:
Tuesday- Ran just over 2 miles at a light pace
Thursday- Ran almost 3.5 with 2.5 miles being at race pace(for me right now that is a 10min/mile)
Friday- run 3 miles at a light pace
Saturday- run 3 miles at a light pace
Sunday- run 5 miles
Sat and Sun may get flipped depending on the weather but that is what I hope to do.
Thank you! They are on my list, I'm just reading reviews and researching what shoe will be best for me to switch to!
We have been a quiet bunch.
Ran 4 miles on Wednesday and 3 yesterday on the TM. It is supposed to be very nice here today and tomorrow then get yuck on Sunday, so runs may get flipped again, but have 3 then 8 then 3 on tap.
Have a 3 day weekend to enjoy.
Heather
We have been quiet lately. So glad to see you are still forging ahead with your training!
I haven't been able to do much... and by much, I mean anything. My recovery is going much slower than I had hoped. I go to the doctor Monday, and I'm anxious to see what she says. I am ready to get out there and train!
Hope everyone has a great weekend!!
I have been "lurking" on the 2012 Princess thread.... Happily thinking that next year it will be us getting ready to go. :goodvibes:goodvibes
My training has been going well, running 3 days a week and strength training 3 days a week. Also working on loosing (and never finding again) some lbs. I participated in the Tinker Bell Half in January and now I am focusing on goals to improve my time for the Princess in 2013 and getting my CTC by completing the Disneyland Half in Sept 2013.
Hope everyone has a great weekend.... It won't be long until we get to sign up for the 2013 event.... (July is right around the corner) Okay maybe not RIGHT around the corner, but it is coming.....:yay::yay:
I'm still running, though last week was a bit of a scheduling disaster. DH had to travel to give a talk, so I was alone with the girls on two of my normal training days. I decided instead of Tuesday Thursday, I'd do Monday Friday. Monday was great. Friday, not so much. I could definitely tell a big difference.
Frankly, I'm having a hard time progressing with the C25K program at this point. I told myself that I'd just repeat week 2, but I ended up trying a bit of week 3. I'm still on week 3, but I don't feel like I'm improving enough to go to week 4. I'm still really worn out on my long run intervals. I've tried slowing way down, but I think that possibly I need to do some cross training on my non-run days to improve my overall fitness. I'm not under any major time crunch, but it's frustrating to be "stuck".
At any rate, I'm not stopping. I'm going to get out there and just run as much as I can.
I can not wait to find out the date for the 2013 PHM! I want to mark it on my calendar, not to mention, schedule off work. :goodvibes
I can't wait. I plan on doing the same...walking/running and strength training. As soon as I get the clearance from my doctor, I'm going to join the gym.
Hang in there! Not that I have any experience, but I have read it is important to strength train also. It can help prevent injuries.
