Pride month at Disney...

Because straight white men have not been marginalize, persecuted, demeaned in the past and present due to their gender or sexuality. My husband and sons fully support pride month. Being cis makes one much less likely to be victimized.
Wrong.
Try competing for certain jobs as a white male, and your competition is a black female.

It certainly can, and does happen that the black female is more qualified, but the white male walks into the interview with “strike two”.

Personally, I capitalize Black, because most/a large portion of Black people do not know their true ethnic background. Due to records being lost or never written down during slavery. So *Black* encompasses the shared background of coming from Africa, without knowing the exact location.

However, as most people know, white people are insanely interested in, and have the ability to find out, their heritage...Irish, German, Scottish, Norwegian, Italian, etc. So, I think of Black as being the heritage until I know otherwise if the Black person knows their specific country their family originated from.

Talking about a white person, I don't capitalize white because that is their skin tone identifier, not their heritage, but I would capitalize German, Irish, etc.

It's been a stupid long week and rereading this, who knows if my words make the sense they do in my brain.
Interesting post, thanks. It makes me think that, maybe, it's appropriate to capitalize Black if I had cause to write about it in the context of nationality/ ethnicity -- in which case I'd capitalize any others I write about, as well. However, if writing about skin color as a description for some other reason ..."black girl in a beautiful dress" / "white girl in a beautiful dress", it wouldn't be appropriate to capitalize either. Context is everything! (ETA: Disclaimer; I do realize it's often unnecessary to mention skin color at all, of course!)

who knows if my words make the sense they do in my brain
LOL Nicely put. A challenge for all of us always!!! :rotfl:

Sorry, OP, I realize I'm continuing one of the tangents on this thread.

From wdwinfo's post on topic, I like this backpack. (And, is it just me, or at $40 is it better value than a lot of Disney merch? Bearing in mind I'm sure I've seen that there are pens at $10?!!)

It would be really awesome if DCL would do some Pride themed cruises in June. I assume they must have some pride merchandise on the ships. I wonder if they do anything beyond that right now.

As far as Disney merch, the price difference is likely that it isn't a "brand name" pack, like Dooney or Loungefly, it's just a backpack. I don't like backpacks, i grew up before they were popular, but I know they sure are popular these days. I prefer a messenger bag type thing.

I saw a couple guys wearing what would appear to have been cruise prdie shirts. A rainbow wave logo with rainbow mickey heads,. Something like this in 6 colors. on their upper left chest.

It looked very nice.

I saw the backpack at Disney Springs and it’s really nice! I didn’t get it becsuse it didn’t have water bottle holders.

I’m surprised they didn’t put out one those crossbody/fanny pack type bags that are so popular at the parks now.

I would also like some DCL specific pride merch!

What was "strike one"?

What was "strike one"?

I wondered that too......strike one is that he's a male? Strike two that he's white?

But hoooo.....boy, you've really got to be stretch to be walking around this planet as an American heterosexual-white male.....and feel sorry for yourself! I mean, it's legit laugh out loud funny to me. The only thing funnier is when the mothers of these gentlemen complain on their behalf.

Any cis male heterosexual in America with an IQ hovering right around 100 is going to be just fine.

Why would I need to tell them that? They have the freedom to make their own life decisions. They get a lot more pressure from people that don't share their values than they ever would from me. They are young adults now and trust me they get what's going on.
To me it's a direct correlation to "you don't need to change your values or convictions".
When did I ever say Disney couldn't embrace diversity? When did I say people couldn't buy merchandise? When were books or movies ever part of the conversation?
1. I never claimed you said Disney couldn't embrace diversity. But it's pretty plain from your responses in this thread you wished they didn't. You don't think there needs to be a "Pride Month". You don't think Disney (any company) should go "all out" in celebrating it (but, you apparently have no problem with Disney going "all out" for Christmas).
2. *I* brought up books and movies in the post you quoted. Not because of anything you said, but I wanted to mention it.
Disney can do whatever they want. Will I vacation there in June..absolutely.. not? Target can sell whatever they want I don't have to shop there. I can drink whatever beer I want. We all have choices and the freedom to patronize what businesses we want to.
3. Again, I never said you tried to prevent others from participating. But you can't deny that there are some people who DO try to stop others. That's how some posts work. You respond to one person, then, in the same post, move on to other points.

I see it as welcoming and embracing people who long felt (and probably still feel) hidden or unwelcome in public spaces. I don't think it's designed to alienate any group, quite the reverse, isn't it to bring us together? I haven't been in Pride Month, but I like to think, that, though straight, I'd be more welcome in talking and laughing with anyone and everyone.

I'm all for upbeat, positive events that promote community - in the broadest sense - and, somehow, make it easier for us all to connect on an equally human level. If we so choose.

...So, it's good to see the ways Disney is helping to celebrate that community-building spirit.
And this is one of the many reasons that a lot of straight women, including myself, enjoy gay bars. The people are friendly, the music is good, we can drink and dance and have amazing conversations...and it's safe to leave a drink on the table without worrying about being drugged. A very upbeat and inclusive environment.

What was "strike one"?
Strike one- white, strike 2-man. Unless you are well connected (because that is probably the biggest benefit that any person can have when applying for school or a job), or there is something crazy unique about you, there are 2 strikes against you if you are a white male. I’m not saying that certain things in life might not have been easier for you (I mean not easier if you are poor or overweight or unattractive), but some things sure.
I wondered that too......strike one is that he's a male? Strike two that he's white?

It’s not like they are walking around feeling sorry for themselves. It’s just that they know it’s a strike against them for job interviews and school applications. And likening IQ/race/gender/sexual orientation to “it’s going to be just fine” is just as ignorant as saying if you are “xyz” you are not going to be just fine. Heck, even being rich and attractive doesn’t even guarantee that and those are the biggest privileges a person could ever have in this life.

I don't like the term and will not relate to it. I'm heterosexual not cis thank you very much. It is my right to use the established term and not bow to mob pressure or new age terms. Not doing it.
Are you still using the term Negro (or worse) to describe Black people? At one time those were very much the established terms, you know. Or are you capable of using more "new age terms" for race?

Doesn’t mean he should be discriminated against. No one should be discriminated against.

If your child needed open heart surgery would you want the best surgeon, or would you accept the one the hospital had to hire to fill a quota. I would want the best no matter their colour or sexual orientation.

I love wdw at Christmas. It’s amazing what goes into storing the decorations and getting them up so efficiently. Every square inch seems to have something. I like the Christmas store at Disney Springs and visit that store once a month on average. We purchase ornaments for the tree from there. Nice place.

My husband has said the same thing....pretty much verbatim. And....he *is* celebrated, by me within our lives. He's recognized as the amazing guy he is by his family in general. He's a great guy. He just recognizes that he doesn't need a parade ;).

It seems like there's this feeling among many that we're all turning our backs on white people...white men, or that many of us are turning our backs on "our own". And I just don't see it that way. It's just being honest about how lucky and easy many of us have had it overall. That also doesn't mean that we didn't have to work our butts off....but doors open more readily/easily for some than for millions and millions of others in our nation alone. And it's easier here in the U.S. than it is in many, many parts of the world.
This reminds me of an exercise I once participated in. They had everyone line up shoulder to shoulder. Then they said, "OK. I'm going to read off a list of life circumstances. If one applies to you, take a step back. If more than one applies, take a step back for each one." Obviously I don't remember them all, but they included "Person of Color," "Cis female," "Transgender," as well as things like "Raised by a single parent," "Did not graduate from high school," and "Diagnosed with a disability." By the end of the exercise, a handful of men were still standing at the starting line, while most people were 1 to 4 steps back or more. Then the leader pointed to the opposite wall and said, "That's where you're trying to get to. That's success in life." We all looked around and realized just how much further some people had to go than others. It was a very profound moment.

So, in your assumption, the more talented cis male white heterosexual heart surgeon has been turned away at the hospital's gates to allow for a less qualified/taleneted black woman heart surgeon? Do they report these things on the news....that these things are happening? Are children dying en masse on the operating table at the hands of under qualified black female heart surgeons?

And to answer your question.....no one should ever experience discrimination. White cis male heterosexual Americans are the absolute last group to encounter it in their lifetimes....if they ever in fact do. Most....don't.

No, do you? Such an ugly and nasty comment.

It's just amazing to me how much love and acceptance isn't being exhibited here when you are all in support of pride month which is supposed to be about those very things. It seems that this thread is full of posters that speak out of both sides of their mouths. On one side you want us all to be loving and accepting of all people but on the other side you show a great lack of both when someone has a different point of view. Hypocrites come to mind.
