Prickly Heat Rash

We were in WDW May of last year and I got really bad prickly heat rash (I couldn't even go out our last day there). Does anyone have any tips to prevent this? We are going again this May (same week as last year), and I really don't want to have to deal with that again!!!! Thanx!

I too have this rash when out in the sun. I wear a hat with a brim and slather sunblock 45SPF throughout the day. Anyway, I still have the problem. Anyone else have this solution

I too get something similar. But only in the south...never here in VT...weird huh!

But anyway- this is what I did last time, and before anyone starts yellin about skin cancer...spend a vacation with the nasty itchy rash and see what you do!...

I tanned before going....having a small base, kept it under control. I also take Benadryl DAILY when I'm on vacation...I also pack Avena's oatmeal bath LOL...dont laugh I've already got it packed for next week!

I pack benadryl pills, the liquid clear anti itch gel, and oatmeal bath.

I also use 45spf..and it still didn't help.

The only thing that I did different last time was 8 visits to the tanning booth- 10 minutes each...I finish up mine next Wednesday for this trip...

We're from VT too, I've been looking for other vermonters with a Disney obsession and you're the first I've seen. I am so invious of you. We still have 3+ months before we go and it is still soooo cold around here. What part of VT are you from? By the way I am allergic to the cold and live in VT go figure. I can appreciate the prickly heat delima better than most.

I to have this problem, when in spain last i had this rash all over my chest and itched like mad. I was given this hydrochortisone mouse, which cleared it up straight away.

Since most of the posters who are having this problem are from less humid places, I thought that ya'll might be having a little problem with the humidity as well. If the rash shows up in places that might rub against something, like under your arms or waistband or thighs, you might want to make sure that you are wearing clothes that "breathe" or dry quickly. I hope this helps!

Keeping powder handy helps, baby powder or after shower powders. It will help absorb moisture to prevent this rash. You can even carry a small trial size in your stuff and use it occasionally during the day.

I've tried the powders, but it seems that it dries the moisture, but increases the itching. I think I will just use hydrocortisone cream @ bedtime and take Benadryl for the itching. Oh! what to do

my son and husband have had this problem.

To prevent, we use desitin powder (yes - the kind for babies) it works like a charm.

If they already have it, a benedryl cream worked well.

I agree with having a "slight" color base at least before going, it just helps your skin deal with the sun a little bit better.

I also agree that the powders dry my skin too much. BUT Desitin also carries a tube "Desitin creamy" that doesn't smell like babies and keeps you moist, but not breaking out. I've had great success with it.

My son is very sensitive to sun and breaks out in prickly heat all the time. I always bring benedryl-pills and creams. He takes the pills at bedtime. Helps him sleep and helps with the inflammation of the rash. But we also do a combination of Hydrocortosine and Benedryl Cream. Put the benedryl on first and then the hydrocortosine cream. The two together seem to help with the itch and clearing up the rash. This was a recommendation from the docter. Also I swear by Gold Bond Medicated Powder. It helps with the itch and soothes!!!

My daughter also breaks out in "prickly heat" the minute we cross into Florida! It's weird because we haven't ever really found a cause... It's not only where her skin rubs (like armpits) or under her bathing suit. Not only in areas with sunscreen... It's just this weird thing that pops up like clockwork.

When I saw the dermatologist for my annual checkup, she said you can always put 1% hydrocortisone cream on ANY rash, and if it doesn't help then you can suspect something like a fungus. I put the cream on Erin's itchy spots every night at the hotel, before bed, and that keeps it in check.

Thanks for the suggestion of Desitin or Gold Bond powder -- I had wondered about these!

I get this rash behind my knees when I get hot and sweaty. I find using a waterproof sunblock helps prevent it. I also puff on the babypowder with cornstarch in it after a shower or bath, and keep hydrocortizone cream in my bag!

Gold bond powder is great, try it. I have a cream from the demertoligist too that I use when the powder fails me (or I forget to use it).

They told me that it had something to do with glass particles in the concrete. The back of my legs were terrible - starting at the top of my socks. A combination of Hydrocortosine and Benedryl Cream combined and applied will help and covering them up. Before the fact you should use som SPF 30 sunscreen.

I agree with the Gold Balm Powder. My son had a nasty case or prickly heat on his inner thighs last summer when we were down the shore and the powder worked like a charm. I took it to WDW a couple of weeks ago just in case and my DS was fine but my DH used it instead and it worked great for him to.
