Hi All!

I know that market forces set prices, but I am surprised at the prices asked for point transfers. It appears to average around $10 per point. Let's say someone wants 102 points for a 2 night (Fri & Sat in the summer @ 51 per night) stay in a 1BR at BLT. Assuming one could get the exact 102 points transferred in, that would take $1,020.00. One can get a rack-rate room reservation direct for Disney for that price. And, they way they discount, maybe even less as the date nears. There just doesn't seem to be the incentive to transfer-in points.

I get that people want at least cover their annual dues, but assuming that dues average around $5.00 per point, $10 per point $eems like a lot. And, the $15 from DVC seems even worse!!!

Please recheck your figures. Points for a summer weekend at BLT for a 1 bedroom would be 88 for standard, 96 for lake view, or 116 for Magic Kingdom view. Rack rates for these rooms through CRO are $1024, $1304, and $2228 respectively. So assuming $10 a point, you would be saving either $144, $344, or $1068. Now whether there would be room only discounts available at that time or not, might make a difference, but you can't always count on them being available.

Yes, I incorrectly looked at the 2010 chart for BLT, not 2011. My bad. :teacher:

Your example shows that the savings gets much higher as the point value increases. Interesting....

also, from time to time - sellers need to move points quickly and will offer discounts from the $10..

Also be aware that based on the POS, you can't pay someone for a transfer, I would be careful discussing it.

Since the price is in line with rentals, I think it is fair. While the transaction is between owners, I don't think that should change what the price is. You are correct that you may be able to rent a room via Disney for less, the points transfer can give an owner the extra points needed for several trips to add to their points so an incentive over Disney.

I have not rented or transferred any of my points, nor do I intend to. however if I were to, I would be inclined to charge less for transferring (were charging for transfers allowed :rolleyes1) then renting due to the significantly lower risks involved and ease. Either way, I think $10 a point is cheap.

The $15/pt one-time use direct from Disney is definitely high, but since it is only usable up to 24 points, most people aren't paying all that much for it anyways. Since I don't want to borrow from a future year to leave all those points in tact for another trip, I'm hoping to be able to complete a reservation at my 7 month window for Aulani by buying 3 points at $45. Well worth it to not use up my transfer for '11 UY and not having to borrow since I have another plan for my '12 UY points and will definitely need _all_ of them then. So while its overpriced, if you only need a few, the convenience is what you're paying for and that's a bargain unto itself.

Transferring allows you the 11 month window without having to own a particular resort.
It really depends on why you need the points. Some villas are not available for cash or discounts like Grand Villas or Boardwalk view.

Transfer or straight out renting are similar from the member's ("sending the transfer") point of view and from the recipient point of view the benefits are the same if they accept a transfer or they acquire the points via a rent so I would define either as an "arm length" transaction at market value. So if I were able to get paid.... for transferring points (for those of you interested in being the recipient of my next free transfer... the wait list is years... beyond 2042..) I would seek to get the same "compensation" as the free market allows. Also I am accepting free transfers as well...

I think the $10 per point price for renting/transferring points is very low. It seems as if on the Disboards it has been at $10 per point since 2004 (maybe before that) and dues continue to increase.

I know there are some companies who rent points and are able to get $13 per point and some as high as $18 per point so I think those renting at $10 per point are getting a bargain.

People who have spent thousands of dollars for a DVC contract should be able to cover more than just their dues. Otherwise, they would be taking a big loss on the deal.

I think some resorts end up more savings than others. When I don't have enough points for a last min trip, it is always SSR with rental points or FQ with a discount of some sort. I usually rent closer to 8.50$ but it is always cheaper than even the FQ. 16 points (or up to 160$ a night at 10$), or 224 sticker, for FQ.

Maybe BLT is only a little diff, BC is way cheaper. a room is about 350$ a night or 16 points.. no brainer there.

Personally, I think $10 per point is low. Considering the amount I paid to acquire the points, and the ever increasing amount I pay for annual dues, and that some are able to get $13, $10 really is a bargain, especially for renters, since they don't have to "manage" the points from year to year. I assume those who are willing to rent/transfer for lower probably acquired their points early on for a relatively low cost.

Anyway, be it rent or transfer, the market (supply / demand) drives the cost.

I agree, $10 per point does seem too low.

The average rental per point price has been around $10 for several years

I've transferred points one time during my ownership in DVC which has been 15 years. Unless it's to a friend or family, I'd never rent or transfer points for only $10 a point. I don't care if that's the average price- the buyer is getting a great deal and sellers should get more for their points. Taking my favorite resort and category- a studio CL room at AKL, going for 13 points a night in value season- a buyer would be able to stay club level for $130 including tax. Compare that to the rate booked via DRC even with a discount. Of course as long as there are DVC owners who need to unload points or who continue to offer their points for sale so low, then buyers will be getting the better end of the deal. There is also risk involved when renting and the hassle factor let alone the fact that someone should get more back than just paying dues- they are also giving up their own resort stay.---Kathy

The value is in the eyes of those two members involved in the transaction. If I am the member transferring, unless I am holding points that are about to expire, I would want what the going rate is; what Disney's cash rate happens to be or the number of points required for the nights that the receiving member wants to book would not have any impact on how I'd price. For a member short points or wanting 11 month booking advantage $10 in most cases will be well worth getting that reservation made.

As others have stated here, other sources can cost more. For needing a transfer occasionally, it's a fair price.
