I haven't been to DC in over 20 years and am looking to take a weekend trip. I plan on using Priceline to book a room. Is there a specific neighborhood to stay away from? We'd like a safe area near transportation since we will be taking the train in. TIA

I took the train in from new york last May and had a blast! Stayed for 4 days over Memorial Day weekend. Did priceline name your price. Put in area near capital.Bid starting at $75 and won for $90 a night at the hyatt regency capitol hill.Very nice and I was pleased!! It is a stones throw from Union Station and we walked to the Mall, Capitol,Supreme Court,Library of Congress... Long story short-I would do it again in a heartbeat!!

We recently went to Washington over Veteran's Day weekend and stayed at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in the Arlington Crystal City area. We paid $99 per night - which was the regular rate.

It was really nice...the best part was that there is a covered walk right from the hotel into the Crystal City shopping area and the Metro station (access to both the yellow and blue lines). It was very quiet. There are lots of restaurants in the area and the area is very safe to walk through...you could walk all underground if you wanted to.

We only use Priceline in Washington DC. We've had great luck in Crystal City, Arlington, Chevy Chase and our best bid was during Cherry Blossom weekend. We wound up with Grand Hyatt at Metro Center for an insanely low bid.

When we arrived, the Grand Hyatt realized that they had to take us (we paid about $70 for the room). The first tried to turf us, but my DH politely told them that the hotel did accept our money! They miraculously found us a room and they comped us breakfast and all but one day of parking.

A Cherry Blossom Ball was in the hotel that night.. here we were in our jeans and tourist wear and they were ballgowns and media in the lobby!

We look in the Verizon Center area.

that is so great to hear. We are taking the kids to DC for memorial day weekend. We decided to fly from Long Island instead of drive, so that took away from the hotel budget! We booked this hotel for 129 w/breakfast.

How was the commute to DC? Any restaurant recommendations?

To the OP, I found the tripadvisor forums to be very helpful! If you give them exact dates and budget, there are people that will search out the best deal.

I was able to get a room at Hyatt Regency Bethesda during spring break for $75 bid. It is right by a red metro and so very convenient. Also check out betterbidding.com. It has a forum that will give you an idea of what you might get at a specific area and how much. Good Luck !

I think you'll really like the hotel. The commute is super easy. It takes about 15 minutes to get downtown - depending on the time of day. The hotel has a shuttle from the airport (Reagan National) but if you wanted to, you could take the Metro one stop up to the hotel.

I went with my husband so we did some pretty upscale dining...but I'm including a link with a map of the area and a list of restaurants...

Hope you have a great time!
