Pretty shocking comments from a CM at Epcot

So, I'm intolerent for not liking intolerent people?:confused3

See this is an example of how easy it is to misunderstand things. My comments were directed at the same person that your comments were directed at...not you. In fact, it was in support of what you said.

Good heavens I even quoted the post I was referring too. Sorry, if you misunderstood that.

Racism in the South varies not only from person to person, but also from place to place.

IMO- if the "offense" was not enough for the 1st hand person to deal with it at the time, then it really should just be chalked up to *some people*. Seriously, only after passing it along to you, both of you deciding that it wasn't worth the time to make a report [it only would have taken your DH to make the report, didn't need to be in front of the kids..] and getting home and stewing on it are you to the point of *deciding* whether to make it an issue. YMMV, but you asked for opnions.

Umm...I think you might have confused posters. Megan_J is the person who wrote the post that you quoted. I, like her, assumed that you found her post (stating that Southerners were bigots) to seem intolerant.

Or I could be misunderstanding things...again.

:goodvibes If you are talking to me, now, (I am not sure that you are:confused3), I felt your good vibes and support from the moment you posted. Thank you!

And I really think Megan J has good intentions, too. It just stung me a little when I first read what she posted.

I love being from the South. It bothers me when people single Southerners out as being racist. Some of it must be deserved. But we are a culturally diverse region, and we have a lot to be proud of, too.

To the OP, my reason for contacting Disney would be to give them a heads up that diversity training is needed. (I would not mention names so much, as just make them aware of the situation.)

It's really something to see how these topics are introduced with no reason other than to see a thread morph into a bickering session. Contrary to believe WDW CMs are real people, they are not created in the Pixar studios nor are they cloned and grown in some CM Matrix farm. Just like real people some of these CMs are a**holes. If you are offended by one of these anomalies then report them and move along with your vacations.

I'm new to the boards but I saw this and I had to comment even though I mostly lurk. :wave2: I think you should say something at that moment to a person that makes a comment like that. My husband is openly Pagan and we live in the South (not really important just felt like throwing it in) and get comments like this quite frequently. People tell my husband he is going to hell and that they will pray for him. We usually try to see this as an opportunity to educate by telling them about the religion and what the beliefs are. Most of these comments are ingnorance. :sad2:
There is one statement that I disagree with, that you shouldn't expect others to stand up for you. We live in a society that deeply believes in this. If someone insults someone else it is not your business, they should stand up for themselves. We should all stand up for them. To do anything else is condoning the behavior. I know this isn't what was meant and I don't mean to sound preachy but this is just a personal pet peeve of mine. :goodvibes Can't we all just get along?:hippie:

Since this is a disney forum I won't get into my opinions of racism etc. I would simply say you need to put the email or letter together with the time, park and name of the employee and send it. Hopefully they can target this individual and have him look for work elsewhere. If your stupid enough to relay your ignorant opinions to customers unsolicited then I'm not sure how you even hold a job.

Oh, I like that! I agree! :goodvibes It reminds me of the statement by Martin Niemoller, "First they came for the communists, and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist. Then, they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then, they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew. Then, they came for me and there was no one left to speak out for me."

You quoted me actually. I'm very confuzzled at this point.

females from a particular nationality and then even more hateful remarks about a certain religious group
Doesn't anyone else wonder what nationality?

I think that the CM should have at the very least been set straight. Whatever he feels, he should keep it to himself.

You got me!! Yes, my intention was to start a North/South war about bigotry and intolerance....You should check out all my other threads, I am a real fire-starter!!

The point of my thread was not to get a CM in trouble, or to get Free Nights (seriously, was that a real comment?) but simply an observation that the CM's at WDW are unusually awesome and how odd it was to run into one who was so vocal about his biases about so many subjects. And my DH did say something to the CM so that is why he was fine with letting it go then and there.

I would love to see this whole thread stop here, especially the negative comments to each other about our regional homes. It is so hard to write things on an open forum when you can not see a persons face or body language. I am not going to respond to any more comments because this divergence was not my intention and I am sorry that it went so wrong.

you really didn't think you making a thread about a CM being racist wouldn't lead to this?

ITA. Sorry, no tolerance for intolerance. If a representative of Disney or any other company is so stupid, they deserve censure or worse. I would absolutely report it. It is inappropriate and makes the company look terrible.

Cissy, you are here long enough to know that this kind of topic will bring anyones attention and different opinions. I do not even know if this thread is under guidelines since we do not discuss anything about religion. I suggest to contact moderators to close it.

To the OP, I would write a nicely-worded email to Disney suggesting they coach the CM on what is appropriate conversation. With the goofiness of the country and laws being passed, his comments could be labeled as a hate crime.

A general comment for this entire thread: I always find it so comical that people are considered prejudice, homophobes, intolerant, etc when they disagree with a lifestyle. I am not perfect, but believe in every word of the Holy Bible. So if I disagree with "religion" and "lifestyles", people like me are considered prejudice, homophobes, intolerant, yet the people who feel this way about me/people like me are considered loving good people. And we wonder what is wrong with our country.

You are correct...I apologize for that confusion or confuzzling;). Now that I have looked it over and have given it some thought...I guess I did intend it for you. I know that you don't see it because none of us, including myself, can see when we do the same thing that others do.

For example, what this all boils down to is that I am intolerant of your intolerance of their intolerance. At the time, I thought I was making a clever point but I can see, with perfect hindsight, that wasn't the case.

People are entitled to their opinion regardless of how bigoted we might think it is. We certainly can, at the time, call the individual on their remarks and make them explain why they feel that way and then, of course, disagree with them. If nothing is said, then the person thinks that we agree with their opinion and it just reinforces it.

Personal, non-communicated intolerance is absolutely no more positive than the slander that the other is spewing forth. But it is still intolerance and the wish to deprive that person of his/her opinion. The only thing that has even a slight chance to work is education and intelligent conversation not making a random judgment based on what someone says without knowing the background.

So, that said...I again apologize for the confusion involved and, if I had it to do over again...I probably would have just read the post and moved on.:cool2:

Frankly, I don't begrudge the CM's having an opinion, I just think it's wildly inappropriate to share that opinion with a customer. Keep your views to yourself when you are on the job. A customer service associate is there to serve the customer, not convert them.

Give me a break. You could start a thread on "Does Disney sell potholders?" and it would turn into a bickering session.

I think this is it in a nutshell.:thumbsup2
