I'm looking forward to pressing some pennies with my kids when we go for our first trip in December.

I'm curious how "pressed" they are though. What are the approximate dimensions and do they stay round?

Thanks!

Actually, pressed is a misnomer. They are elongated.

The machine stretches the penny. The width of the elongated penny is about the same as the diameter of the penny. The length ends up about twice the diameter. And, of course, it is thinner than the original penny.

The pennies when pressed end up about the size of a nickel but not completely round, a bit ovally. They are quite thin, bit thinner than a dime, I'd say. Don't forget you can buy a penny press book to display them in. The pennies slide into a little clear compartment so you can see which ones you have. My 8 yr old daughter loved doing them last year. We had fun spotting them all over the parks. She is already saving her quarters and pennies for this year's trip. They are a great inexpensive souvenir.
Have a great trip and enjoy pressing pennies! :flower:

Where did you get your penny press book, I would love one. DS has sooooo many pressed pennies. I think its a great Idea.

They sell them all over WDW and DTD -- little vinyl tri-fold books that unfold to reveal several clear vinyl "slots" in which to display your pennies.

SOmetimes you can also find them on ebay for sale, but be careful -- as with many things on ebay and the 'net, it's easy to overpay! Can't recall what I spent on the ones my kids have -- seems like it was 5 or 6 bucks? Gifts of a Lifetime (internet site www.giftsofalifetime.com) used to sell them also for more than the WDW price. Also -- some of the ones on ebay are Disneyland, not Disneyworld -- if that matters to you at all. THey have some that only hold pennies, and some that only hold quarters, and some that hold mostly pennines but a few quarters as well.

If you want the books in advance of your trip, you can call WDW and have them sent to you -- I think you will pay the cost and the shipping, but not the sales tax. Probably more reasonable than ebay, when all's said and done! Alternatively -- just get the book when you get down there!

A tip -- to keep pennies and quarters handy at all times -- save old film containers! I would place 2 quarters and a penny, 2 quarters and a penny, etc. in these containers and give one container to each kid. THis served 2 purposes: they could easily get to the correct change (and clean shiny pennies!) when a machine was spotted, and they could also have a place to put the pressed coin afterwards until they could get it into their books. We never took the books with us in the parks -- figured it was safer back at the room or even home! But the film canisters made handy vessels for holding each child's penny. I had written each child's name on the container, too -- so there was no confusing whose pennies were whose (as opposed to me keeping them in my pocket and them fighting over the best "prints" later!)

Have fun!!

My daughter bought her book at WDW. It was only 5 or 6 dollars. She carried her quarters and pennies in a mini M&M container. I saw this tip on these boards before we went and it worked wonderfully plus it held more than a film cannister but both ways would work. :flower:

The books mentioned can be really attractive, but if your DS really has a lot of coins, you may want somehting cheaper. If you google something like "elongated coin supplies" (or something similar) you should find several folks who sell storage supplies - compare prices before buying. Right now, ours are in a bowl (DD likes to be hands-on and play with them) but if we get many more, I will probably go for one of the systems that will let me store them in a 3-ring binder. They have little cardboard squares with clear windows - you fold them over the coin and staple it shut - then you can put those into the binder using pages with pockets.... kind of like baseball cards, only more to a page.

I love the pressed pennies. Ive been collecting them over the years and my favorite has to be a pressed quarter from the 25th celebration at WDW. It has the genie and the 25 logo and all that. :) So neat.
