Pressed Pennies? What's this all about?

I've read on board alot of people mentioning doing this while at WDW. I guess its sort of a collectors thing, but I have no clue
Could someone fill me on the basics of doing this.

Around the parks there are machines that will squish a penny and put an imprint on it. Usually each machine has 4 choices as to what design will be on the penny. I believe each press costs 50 cents (maybe more in WDW than in other places I've seen the machines).

The pressed pennies are machines found throughout WDW. I think there is a link somewhere to tell you where you can find certain characters. It costs .51. We collected quarters and pennies and put them into those M&M tubes which were so easy and convenient to carry around with us. They also sell booklets for you to put the pressed pennies into. Although it is inexpensive, it can add up quickly if you are determined to find all of them. Our daughters only wanted the princess's so it wasn't that bad.

We've also used the pressed pennies to make refrigerator magnets. I have an album for our next trip. The albums are inexpensive and a great way to store your pennies and quarters. Children enjoy "the hunt" for just the right penny machine in each area of the parks and resorts. I hope you enjoy it!

I like to drill a little hole in the top and use them as charms on a bracelet. Sometimes you can find quarter pressing machines, I think they are a dollar + the quarter that is pressed. Overall, pressed pennies are a cheap way to remember your trip. I like to tape one onto the side of my PC moniter, that way I can always remember disney every time I'm online.

We use the M&M tubes too!! My kids love collecting these, They each have one full album we will have to buy a new one when we are there in Sept.

My boys have been collecting the pennies for years. They still get excited when they find a machine. We have to get a couple of pressed pennies each vacation. It's become a family tradition. We have also made magnets and put them in albums. It's really fun for the kids and adults, too.

Making a charm bracelet from squished pennies? What a great idea! I think I might do that for my youngest DD, she would love it!

Thank you. This will be such a great side activity for dd (7) to do while in the parks as we won't be focusing so much on all the rides (especially big, scary, loud ones) due to dd's autistic, sensory issues.

I collect pressed pennies too. I have them from all over the place, not just WDW. My DS loves them and looking for the machines. We bring a empty film container to put in the quarters in. They are a cheap fun way to remember your vacation.

I got my 1st one 10 years ago at Stone Mountain GA. I've also just got them on a trip to Navy Pier in Chicago. So I don't think they will turn into a craze. But they sure are fun to hunt for and get!

Around each park, you'll find 'penny pressers' in different locations. These cost 51 cents, I believe, and what it does is it takes the penny, sort of smashes it, and POP! Out comes your penny, but in a design! Yay!! Hope this was helpful to someone.

Do the pressed pennies actually look better if you use new shiny ones? OR do they all come out looking the same after getting smashed?

My son has been collecting pressed pennies from the last 2 trips. Shiny pennies seem to come out much nicer than the older pennies. As a matter of fact we are saving some "shiny ones" for our next trip!


We book an album on our first trip down which holds pennies and quarters!

We had fun in April collecting the pennies in all the world showcase countries.
You have to search for the machines though. They are tucked in the corners
of all the stores.

I have read that pennies from 1982 and after have both copper and zinc so when you press them you can see a zinc outline. So there are people who use pre-1982 pennies so they don't have this "smear" of zinc.

I personally use the most recent and shiniest pennies I can find b/c the pre-1982 pennies are hard to clean, and the newer ones look fine to me!
