Is it possible (and safe - I will be alone with an 8 year old) to walk from the Premium Outlet Mall to the Publix across the way? I was trying to figure out from google earth if it is possible to sensibly cross that road and whether there are sidewalks all the way. If so, how long would it take to walk?

Next question, assuming we get to Publix, can we get a taxi back to Disney from there? What I mean is, are there taxi's lined up and waiting like there are at P/Outlets?

Thanks for your help :goodvibes

I don't remember if there are sidewalks, but the road dividing Publix from the mall is not a major one; you could cross it with the usual cautions.

You would probably have better luck getting the cab outside the mall, but it's a simple enough matter to plug the number for Mears' Checker Cab into your cell phone and call them when you are nearly done with your shopping. The number is (407) 422-2222.

Yes, it's very easy to get over to Publix. It's not directly across from Orlando Premium Outlets but it's not far down either. The road in between (Vineland Road) has a grassy center median so you only have to make it half way across each time. Make sure you're holding the child's hand so that there is no possibility that he/she darts out. The only other danger is Vineland Road curves here in both directions so the distance of vehicles coming at you can be deceiving. You also have to contend with vehicles coming out of the outlet mall exit road. But yes, it can be walked quite easily.

There are always taxis at the outlet mall but you're unlikely to find one parked at the Publix. You can walk back to the mall to get an immediate taxi but if that's not convenient because of your Publix purchases, I'd ask a Publix manager or clerk at the Convenience Desk to call a taxi for you. I'm sure they'd be happy to do that for you and given that the customer base in that store is 90% tourists, probably not an unusual request at all. But do look first as there could be one out there.

I agree with that suggestion.

That's great news! I had thought if the worst came to the worst I could take a taxi from PO to Publix, but that seems a bit silly, unless of course it is in the name of safety. DD always holds my hand when we cross roads anyway so I'm not too worried about that, but I didn't want to do anything stupid ;) Also, coming from Britain, the traffic is coming from opposite directions so I always have to reverse my instictive checks for traffic!

Just a thought from a former long-time Florida resident: I don't know when you are planning to be at the Outlet Mall, but other than winter-time, it is extremely hot, humid, and bright outdoors in Florida. The walk looks OK from the standpoint of Google Earth. But looks are very deceiving when considering Central Florida weather. It can feel like you are in your oven at home with the heat turned on, and the sun overhead is brutal. At Disney, there are shade trees and benches everywhere. On this walk to Publix, there is nothing to shade your walk, and the heat coming off the pavement and sidewalk is unbelievable. Bear this in mind when the time comes. A short ride in an air-conditioned taxi would be my sincere recommendation. Enjoy your stay! :)

You know, I didn't even consider that! Glad you posted. I spent several years in a very hot climate and will handle the heat if need be, but my daughter is 100% Scottish thoroughbred  and I do need to consider that. We will be there in the first two weeks of October.

I'm glad you posted. How much change more or less should I keep for a taxi?

I am guessing this would be a minimal ride. Minimum should be posted on the side of the taxi. Taxi might take Credit Card. This ride should be less than $5. You should probably have single dollars (ones) handy for tips during your stay. Tell the driver you are going to Disney hotel afterward and see if he wants that fare, too, without charging you for waiting. That ride will probably cost $20 or more depending on where your resort is. :)

Your daughter might take to the intense weather very well. October should be nice, but could be hot. Good choice.

Thanks. Yes I always have $1 and $5 bills on me for tips and things like that. We usually go in April so I expected October to be similar or maybe a bit warmer but not too bad. ;)

The weather should be warm in early October but the extreme summer heat and humidity normally ends in late September. Really, the walk to Publix is just 5-6 minutes. Even an American could walk that! "It ain't that far." :)
