To the OP:
Sounds like it's been a few years since you've been to the Fort? You'll want to study the new transportation routes a bit.
Basically, from the Pioneer Hall area ("The Settlement") you can get to the stuff on the Monorail loop. From the "front" ("The Outpost") you can go to all the other places.
There's 3 internal buses. There's three colors:
(Correct map now, as corrected below by TCD.)
Buses change colors at the Settlement and Outpost. They may also lose they color and head for The Lodge. It can be confusing for a few days.
Also, the TTC is no longer the hub it once was, don't bother going there.
All that said, we've stayed in the 100 loop and the 1600/1700/1800/1900 clover in our last couple trips. The 100 loop was very nice to be able to simply walk to the boats. But the full hookup loops were nice with our golfcart because they are roughly halfway between the Settlement and Outpost. We also stayed in the full hookup loops without our golfcart having to wait for an internal bus, then wait for another bus to leave the Fort took a certain amount of patience. Some (me) are OK with that, others (my wife), not so much.
Lot's of folks use the Magic Kingdom as a pseudo hub. The boat from the Fort is direct, frequent, and enclosed on cool nights. There are thousands of people leaving the Magic Kingdom at all hours. Catching a bus from there after a quick boat ride is often quicker than waiting at the Fort where a few hundred people are served. I have even found that the buses to and from the Lodge seem more frequent. Catch things just right and you don't even have to get off at the Lodge and switch buses to go to the Fort, the bus you're on may not go directly back to where it came from. Some stop at the Lodge, go to Pioneer Hall, then to the Outpost (as an Orange bus I think), then leave from there back to where they came from.
One last tip. Don't be afraid to tell the drivers where you're headed. I've had them switch their route around slightly just for us, or a few of us. Mostly had that happen late, and when there's just a few people on the bus, but it has saved us from a long bus ride and/or transfer someplace. All the drivers have a complete schedule for the day too. They can tell what buses are going where, instead of guessing and hoping.
One really last thing. I prefer using Disney transportation (besides our golfcart). But I can definitely see where some folks prefer to simply drive their own cars to the parks. That's another option.
And as long as I've sent this thread sideways to transporation. I haven't done it, can someone tell me if it's a viable option to get to/from the Fort from/to the Hollywood studios by taking a boat over to/from EPCOT and to/from the Fort from there? The buses to and from the Studios seem to go all over.
