Pre-trip jitters

I leave for WDW in 6 days (!!)--at this time next week I'll be at MNSSHP!!--and I am sooo incredibly excited, especially after the welcome surprise news that the Grand Floridian lobby construction zone is mostly cleared! (I was expecting my first stay at the GF to be a bit hampered by the construction, but it looks like the beautiful lobby will be back to normal?!) So it's major excitement over here, but then at the same time I have quite a bit of anxiety about things like the weather, making sure we all stay healthy, etc. The last time I was in WDW was during the tropical storm in November, so I am just praying we have no more extreme weather events this year. (I know September is during hurricane season, but since this was planned around a work trip, it had to be these dates.) And of course, hearing about Covid cases on the rise has me very nervous too, both about staying healthy in the lead-up to the trip as well as during. Do any of you also battle these pre-trip jitters, and how do you find is the best way to deal?

Also, if anyone who has more experience with Orlando weather in September (specifically Sept 9-15!) can let me know what to expect, I'd be super grateful! I'm hoping that there might be a little break between Idalia and the next weather event that comes along- is that likely or just wishful thinking? LOL! And lastly, do you have any tips for how you keep everyone healthy before and during the trip besides the usual hand-washing/sanitizing and masking in crowds? We already do those but I'm always eager for any other immunity tips! 😊

Thank you in advance!! 💖

There is another depression in the Atlantic, and it’s too early to make any kind of accurate prediction, but lots of models are saying that even though it’s expected to rapidly form into a storm, it will turn north toward Bermuda. 🤞🏻 We will also be there during that time frame, and I’m starting to get a bit nervous. This is our third year going this week, and if it’s anything like the last two, plan for pretty big storms to hit every afternoon. None were all evening wash-outs, but they were heavy enough to flood the front of Epcot and Fantasyland/Tomorrowland at MK. The storms won’t cool it off either but just serve to make it more oppressive, so pack lots of water along with your poncho and rain shoes. We’ve always had a great time and go with the (rain)flow, and I hope you do as well!

For weather we take ponchos and stroller cover (zip up one if you have a baby carrier)

I make sure I’m vaccinated (chicken pox - loose immunity every 3/4 years to the shock of Drs and nurses/COVID)

I take my arsenal of meds to deal with what if’s with the kids:

Herbpharm peppermint breath refresher (has alcohol; I use if I’ve been in crowds; figure the alcohol will kill most pathogens)

Liquid Iv+c (boosts immunity no dehydration)

Vicks vapotabs and sinex severe congestion relief and a saline nasal spray

Children’s Dimeatapp multi symptom cold & flu (has high dose acetaminophen, Diphenhydramine and Phenylephrine hcl)

Fiber packets (add to something cold to thicken stools)

Thermometer

Advil children chewables; tylenol for kids (travel size; usually available at gift shops)

Benadryl single doses (Dr kids brand)

Terramin clay (multi use, can be used as calamine lotion) and anti histamine roll on

Wish apple cider vinegar came in travel size (helps indigestion)

First aid kit incl satchels of antibiotics (can get in gift shops, alcohol wipes and bandaids

Overall, just hope for the best, be prepared for the worst and enjoy time with family.

We had to rent a car, buy groceries, car seats, hotel stay overnight, drive back 20 hrs one time when all flights were canceled April 2022

Always check flight status one more time before dropping bags off at airports!!! People who dropped off bags couldn’t find them for days (few baggage handlers)

WDW COVID accommodations are great. They let you stay at wilderness cabins. Not sure if it’s still the case, but it helps to know what happens if you do fall sick; video is one year old:

How Disney handles COVID on cruises (the hardest part was rescheduling flights)

Thank you!! And YIKES, I didn’t realize there was already another storm forming. 🙈 I’m praying it steers clear of Orlando!

Re: the daily big storms you experienced in previous Septembers, would they be bad enough to cancel fireworks and parades? Now I’m worried we could miss Boo to You or the Halloween fireworks that I got the dessert party for. Eek!

No. We never had a cancellation of fireworks! The first year was just the calvacades (which I loved and now miss), so those could kind of be adjusted for weather. I don’t remember any parades canceled last year - but I’m not really a parade person. I’m the one running to the rides when I hear the music or see the CMs circling with the barrier ropes! We didn’t do MNSSHP or Boo Bash in the past, so I can’t comment about the party, but we are doing it this year as the little ones I’m traveling with are old enough now to attempt to stay up late. So I’ll be crossing my fingers for good night weather as well! (I follow Ryan Hall, Y’all, National Hurricane Center, and Dr.Levi Cowan on Twitter and find them very informative and not sensationalized - if you’re interested in seeing what’s up.)

Thank you so much! I will definitely start following those accounts. Wishing all good weather and good trip vibes for you too!!

I’ve been to WDW many times in September and October.

For us while we were there….
*Fireworks have been delayed and no Tink
*For MNSSHP - parade delayed and no Headless Horseman
*Fantasmic has been canceled (the shows on water - understandable)
*The water parade by the resorts has been canceled

You can’t control the weather, so you gotta just roll with the punches. You’ll have a blast regardless what happens and remember - WDW isn’t going anywhere and you can always return sometime.

Have a fun and safe trip :smickey:

Sleep and water! This includes travel. Don’t arrive without enough sleep. And speaking of travel, try not to let yourself get stressed. It’s not easy keeping our brains quiet while traveling but it sure helps to just go in with a deep breath and take things as they come step by step.

Sleep, water, and avoid stress. These get neglected leading into and during a WDW stay and I think getting rundown is a big reason why sickness is commonly tied to a trip (along with people mingling).

Yes. Lot of refillable water bottles, sunscreen (refrigerated), misting fan, Olly stress gummies or pills (have ashwagandha), Ashwagandha, liquid IV (hydration), activene (pain relief), Advil, massage gun (Bob and Brad Q2 mini), Vicks vapo tabs and sinex extreme and saline spray, herbpharm breath refresher (kills everything)

And most importantly: Escape from family occasionally (spa, hair updos, trip to gift store, build a lightsaber, poolside drinks etc).
