Prayers and good thoughts for my cat please.

Hi, I don't think that I've ever posted a thread like this before and usually don't post much at all but I am really hoping that others will respond with kind thoughts.

We just got home from a week at the Jersey Shore. We have three cats who are fed and watered every day by our kind neighbors. Our oldest cat Daisy always hides when strangers are in the house so the fact that he didn't see her didn't seem odd.

Once home, I heard a meowing coming from the upstairs bathroom and when I opened the door I found her. She was extremely thin and dehydrated. She immediately drank water and my DH took her to the ER Vet since it's Saturday.

They said that she was severely dehydrated and her blood work showed high protein since her body was consuming it's own flesh. She is 16 years old and weighed 9 lbs, now she weighs 6 lbs. Whatever they test for in the liver was high but that may just mean that her liver is working hard to process whats been put through it. Heart and lungs looked good. I think they are very cautiously optimistic.

I'm sorry for this super long post, I needed to get it out. This cat was my husband's before I met him and has always been in "our" family.

First off It's harder with older cats when things like this happen......the main thing is you got her to the vet ASAP. She's getting fluids and food and should be able to recover. Prayers are with her for a speedy recovery

Did the vet put a fluid pac under her skin? My 14 yr old had that done when a low-level infection caused her to become dehydrated (she didn't eat or drink and liked to hide-not normal for her).

I ahve 2 "middle aged" cats. Many prayers for yours. I hope she recovers. When my cat was young, she was dehydrated. The vet injected fluid under her skin. She looked like a camel for a couple of days.

I'm sorry to hear about your kitty.

When you said something about Daisy's liver my immediate thought was that she has Fatty Liver Disease. Last year my cat, Stitch, stopped eating (we aren't sure why, it might have been the antibiotics she was on for a UTI) and she developed a fatty liver. My vet said when a cat stops eating their body starts sending fat cells to the liver for fuel but a cat's liver is not efficient at processing the fat so the liver becomes fatty.

Fatty Liver Disease is treatable but you have to get the cat to eat to reverse the metabolic malfunction. Unfortunately, Stitch wouldn't eat on her own so she had to have a feeding tube. The situation with Stitch lasted all summer and we did have to end up putting her to sleep last August. But, she was never a well kitty and the vet thinks maybe she had cancer too because he was confident she would recover from the fatty liver. She was 5 years old. I didn't want to post the sad ending but figured you wondered what happened. I hope I didn't upset you.

Thank you so much for all the prayers and hugs. It is truly making me feel better.

The vet said that she is resting comfortably and accepting the iv fluids. I guess they told DH that we could do subcutaneous fluid injections but her blood vessels have probably shrunken away from the skin and the fluid wouldn't absorb.
She has eaten a can and a half of fancy feast and kept it down.

To the pp that mentioned fatty liver disease, thank you. I'd never heard of that and will mention to the vet tomorrow.

Thank you. We spoke to the doctor this morning, she is eating and drinking but her blood work came back still elevated. They are going to keep her on the iv and test again this afternoon. I am still in shock that this happened

Your story has given me chills.

We have two cats & our oldest is also named Daisy. We just returned on Friday from 2 weeks in WDW. Our neighbors were also watching our cats. I shudder to think what we would've come home to if one of our cats had been locked in a bathroom the entire time. For future trips, I will make sure that our neighbor ALWAYS checks that he sees both cats when he's over to feed them.

Last year we had something similar happen. My neighbor was cat sitting and when she didn't see one of my cats she just assumed he was shy. Well he had gotten out and was left outside and unfed for two whole weeks!

He looked horrible, just skin and bones but he recovered pretty quickly and is fine today. I hope your cat recovers just as quickly.
