Prank phone calls and *69

*57 is Call Trace. It will capture the information from last incomming call to your line and record the information at the phone company. Our Co needs to record 3 successful traces to the same number before we release the information to your local police department. We charge $1.00 per successful trace.

For people with Caller ID there is a built in feature *77 that will reject calls that have been purposefully blocked from showing on Caller ID. The calling party will hear a recording that you do not accept blocked calls. If the calling party wants the call to go through then they have to dial *82 and that will unblock their name and number to be delivered for that one call only.

Can you tell I give out this info alot?
I don't want to pay to trace calls that are just kids pranking -- unless it continues/increases/gets nasty.

The *77 is a free thing? I may have to take advantage of that.

*77 is free because you are already paying for the Caller ID.

I don't blame you for not wanting to pay for the Call Trace considering the calls you are receiving. But when the calls are abusive, etc then most people gladly pay the fee. And possibly other companies do not charge, I can only speak for where I work.

When school starts, so does the prank calls.

Is that something I have to enter more than once? What if I decide I no longer want the screening, can I un*77?

Thanks for the info -- I'll see how it goes. I'm assuming the kid will get bored and move on. Although, about 10 years ago (late 20s) we had guys at my friend's shore house that used to make calls on Saturday mornings that were similar to Crank Yankers, so maybe some never outgrow it! :teeth:

To turn off *77 (Anonymous Call Rejection) lift the handset and dial *87.

Once you have the feature activated it stays on until you deactivate it.

Prank calls can be fun sometimes if you are creative about it. :teeth:

Gives you a chance to take any frustrations you may have out on someone who is just ASKING for it, if you now what I mean!!! :rotfl2:

Holy crap, are you kidding? I hope no one you care about ever calls from a different location than you are used to. :earseek:
Seriously? Are YOU kidding? If I don't answer the phone, they can leave a message. No, I NEVER answer the phone if I don't know who it is? That's why I have caller ID and voice mail.

back in the day before caller id and caller blocking...they had just started the *69 thing...i had a female friend who would on the occasion of receiving an obscene phone call immediatly *69 the person back and start in on them "did you enjoy yourself, does your wife/girlfriend/mother know what you are doing? should i call this number tomorrow during the morning or your dinner hour and share your sick little secret with whoever answers?". she got very few repeat calls.

Me and my friends did a few of these too, back in the pre-called ID days. We would call and sing to whomever answered, "Have you had your sprinkle today??"

Same here, I don't get what the big deal is. :confused3 We don't answer anything with an unknown or private number (the ones that get through our filter thingy, anyway) and the answering machine screens them just fine.

Since I've had caller ID, I've always used the anonymous call rejection. That said, I still get quite a few unknown and out of areas. If the call is from out of state (as 90% of the calls on my home phone are), Private will still show up.

My sister has to do the *82 before calling me.

I know it didn't work for you, but I love how *69 has evolved and now gives you the number that called, instead of just connecting you. It's coming in handy at work-we are getting an inordinately large number of hangups and my district manager okayed us using the caller ID to track these calls.

This works for me when it's a child: Just press any button on your phone. Then say "Officer, this is the caller I was telling you about, please trace this call." Usually they hang up and never call back. That way you don't wind up having a child prosecuted for doing kid things. If they persist after that then maybe prosecution or the the threat of it anyway will be what it takes.

Last prank call we got I did the *69 and got the local fire station. Of course they denied knowing anything about it and the Captain on duty said his crew would never do something like that. Course this was the same fire station where some drunk firemen stole a police cruiser from out front last winter.
