I hear the estimate is now $800 million annuity, $496 million lump sum payout.

So I'll probably buy $20 worth of tickets, letting the computer pick nine random sets of numbers, then choose 65, 66, 67, 68, and 69 with 26 as the powerball for the 10th ticket. It's as good a method as any other.

Everyone who has liked one of my posts in the past gets a share if I win. Maybe a dollar if I feel generous.

Good luck to anyone who plays.

I was waiting for a Powerball post. :wave2:

DH bought 20 bucks worth.

I am going to pick a few numbers.

My sister is adding "Powerplay numbers" to her ticket since she is buying more than one ticket as well.

If I was the sole winner of that jackpot, I would never work again. party:

Got tickets with my department at work, and got a few for my family as well, too much money to pass up. LOL A few at work don't gamble, so didn't go in, I guess they will be here by themselves next week. haha

I'm in. I may pick a couple numbers and the grab some random. I played the last 2 times and no luck. I don't think I want $800 million. I'd have to change my identity.

DH has bought two tickets (I think $4?) for each drawing this week. We'll buy two more for Saturday's drawing. We like to dream about what we'd do if we won the jackpot. :)

$496 million lump sum. After Federal Taxes (39.6%), take home would be $299.6 million. Subtract state and local as applicable...

That's a crazy amount of money. Just insane. Who needs that kind of money?

I would pull a Rick Warren/Bill Gates and give away 90% of it.

it is as good a set of numbers as any as far as chance to win. But it is a bad sequence in that people tend to take sequential sets. So you'll be sharing your win with likely several people. The worst numbers are 1,2,3...x. A ton of people per week take that sequence so even if you win, you'll be sharing the prize with a ton of people. Things that make a pattern on the screen should also be avoided for the same reason.

Because I gave you a useful tip, if you win I get $5 instead of $1.

I don't buy a ticket often, but I'll get one for tomorrow for certain. :)

Lol, if you go to the budget board you will find some disser ready to tell you how foolish you are for wasting your money.

I'm in a company pool.

I've got my villa in Portugal all picked out, along with the pool boy.

Good grief!!!! Those guys sound like a barrel of fun!

Anyway, yeah, I'll play a few picks and hope, just like everyone else.

Haha...DH bought a few tickets.

The other day when I was off, my coworkers bought tickets for a deptartment pool. I was not here and got the email too late. I didn't really care that I missed it. There are 10 of us in the dept.

Yesterday, they started it up again since nobody won the jackpot, using the $10 that they won in the first pool. I said to someone that I would like to play this time if it would be easy to add me in and wouldn't mess anything up.

BIG MISTAKE!

There was so much discussion between all of them over how to make this happen, and a ton of hemming and hawing, and calculating and confusion that I finally just said forget it! I was willing to pay whatever they said I needed to, but even that wasn't good enough.

Some of the comments:
  • I should pay $5.00 because I wasn't in the first one
  • No, it should be $4.00 like the rest of them because really, everyone only won one dollar and it's just a dollar which breaks out to about 11 cents per original participant and is it really that big of a deal, blah, blah, blah"
  • The $10 won is just going back toward more tickets anyway, so just have her pay $5 and it will be even
  • It wouldn't be fair to buy tickets with the money we already won ($10) with her winning on those tickets if we so happen to win because she wasn't part of the original drawing where we won the $10

I finally said forget it and went back to my desk! Then we had to go through the whole "are you sure? We think we figured it out....are you sure....absolutely sure?...last chance to change your mind....??!!"

OMG....by that point I could see the nightmare that it would be if we all actually won, that I decided I was NEVER going to do an office pool again! LOL

People get crazy when it comes to money.

This is me too. It's too much money. I was just telling my friend that if I won, I would announce at the press conference that I was giving away 95% of the winnings to charities of my choosing.

If you win do you have to give up your identity?

You can stay anonymous

It actually depends on the state you live in. In Illinois, you are not able to stay anonymous.

ETA -

According to what I can find, only 6 states — Delaware, Kansas, Maryland, North Dakota, Ohio and South Carolina — allow winners to remain anonymous.

1. Remain anonymous if your state rules permit it.

Only six states -- Delaware, Kansas, Maryland, North Dakota, Ohio and South Carolina -- allow that. Once people know you're suddenly wealthy, you'll be badgered by requests for handouts from everyone from charities to long-lost friends and relatives–not to mention all the financial "experts" who will be vying for your business. So check state rules to see whether you can dodge them all by remaining anonymous. Some states, such as Colorado, Connecticut, and Vermont, allow lottery winners to keep their names private if they claim winnings through a trust or a limited liability company.
