My daughter wants to wait until after DH and I return from WDW in Septmeber to begin potty training her then 2 1/2 year old son. I would like to begin collecting things to make the whole transition easier for both of them such as books (for her and for him), a potty chair, potty seat and stars for reward, etc. I would also like to get advice from been there, done that moms as well.

Would you please answer the questions below. It will be of great help to her and me as well. Since I care for DGS while DD works and goes to school, I think I could use a refresher course myself especially when it comes to little boys. :scared1:

At what age did you begin potty training your son?

Did you use a potty chair?

If yes, which one worked best for you?

Did you use a potty seat at some point?

Did you offer any rewards and if so, what?

What books came in handy in the process?

What if any children's books did you find helpful?

Did you use pull ups or underwear?

What process did you follow?

How long did it take your son to become fully potty trained?

Please give any other suggestions you may have. DD and I will welcome any and alll advice. Thank you.

I have 3 boys and I will say the first trained the easiest out of the 3 but all 3 were fully trained a couple of months before turning 3 (the oldest was 2 1/2) but I trained them all the same.

At what age did you begin potty training your son? I started between the ages of 2 and 2 1/2. My 2nd and 3rd were closer to 2 1/2..they weren't ready before that.

Did you use a potty chair? We had one but they didn't use them for long. I also had a seat that sat on top of the real potty. My boys started out standing up and that worked good for us.

If yes, which one worked best for you?

Did you use a potty seat at some point?I liked the ones that fit on top of the toilet so there's nothing to clean out.

Did you offer any rewards and if so, what? Yes, we did rewards. Really anything that gets them motivated. Stickers, m and m's..stuff like that.

What books came in handy in the process? I didn't really read any books

What if any children's books did you find helpful? We might have had a few children's books but I can't remember what they were

Did you use pull ups or underwear? Only pullups for nighttime. I went straight to underwear. Yes at first it is a LOT of laundry, poopy pants, basically a pain in the butt but that is the only way they are going to learn

What process did you follow? When I first started I would take them every hour or so just so they got used to going. Eventually I would extend the time longer and longer. Remember lots of accidents at first. I remember with my 2nd he wasn't getting it so I quit for about a month and then tried again.

How long did it take your son to become fully potty trained? All 3 boys were fully trained before their 3rd birthday. Poopy training was not fun!!

Any other questions just let me know.

I started training my son at 2 3/4. He had been wearing pull-ups for a few months, but had shown absolutely no interest in the toilet - in fact, he ran screaming whenever I even suggested he sat on the potty chair or wore underwear. He trained in 2 days :rotfl: I told him on the Friday that he would start wearing underwear and going potty on the toilet on Monday. And he did - he had accidents for the first 2 days, then was dry and clean (day and night) from then on.
Now, I know he isn't the norm - but I guess I picked exactly the right time to do it. I run a daycare, and kids vary so much - but if they don't get it within a few days, I say give up and try again in a few more weeks. They'll get it eventually - and there's no point in spending weeks or months to potty train anyone. Oh - and my definition of being potty trained is that they express the need to go, take themselves in there, pull down their clothes, go potty, and put their clothes on again. If you take them every hour, and they go, they aren't trained - you are :):)

My son was trained really late, but I'm glad I waited. He was in daycare and while lots of his friends, especially the girls, were trained way ahead of him, the teachers kept assuring me that he just wasn't ready, so they weren't going to push him. He was just go, go, go all the time and wouldn't stop long enough to think if he had to go ahead of time. I thought about starting to push the issue when he was 3, but then we had a trip to Disney planned for that spring, then when we got back I tried. He would sometimes sit on the potty, but again, really had no interest. I was more afraid of pushing him and then him regressing. Again his daycare teachers assured me it was okay. We did move him into pull-ups, and he would occasionally go to the potty, but more often just would notice he was wet after the fact.

We finally decided that we'd wait until after he was scheduled to get his tonsils/adenoids out because I thought there was no sense in doing it beforehand. So, he was almost 4 before we actually got down to business, but boy it was quick (less than 2 weeks) and pretty painless! We used Buzz Lightyear stickers on a chart, and trips to the dollar store for each complete row.

Now nighttime was a different story. He is a "sleep like the dead" type of kid who's body will not wake up if he has to go, so again, no sense pushing it or embarassing him any more than necessary. He wore pull-ups far past 5 years old at night. He's old enough now that we can just limit liquids and make sure he goes to the bathroom before bed, but he will still wet the bed on occasion, maybe once a month or so.

So, my advice, if you don't think your child is ready, don't push it!

I have 4 boys, my youngest one was the easiest to potty train, mostly because I waited. With my other ones I was trying to be like other moms, you know, the "my DS was potty trained at 2" ones. The youngest one I was old enough to know better, lol. On his third birthday I said "okay, you're 3 now, no more diapers when the sun is out." So to answer your questions:

At what age did you begin potty training your son? 3

Did you use a potty chair? yes, he was afraid of falling into the big one

If yes, which one worked best for you? NOT the one that made noise, he would play with it, we had to scrap it for a plain one.

Did you use a potty seat at some point? not with him, but it worked well for my other kids.

Did you offer any rewards and if so, what? no, but that's not his nature, we just had a potty song and dance we did to celebrate every time he went. My other kids used m&m's and one used hershey kisses.

What books came in handy in the process? We had an old board book that had a button you pushed for a flushing noise, but I'm not sure it really helped, although it did reinforce washing your hands which helped.

What if any children's books did you find helpful? None come to mind.

Did you use pull ups or underwear? Underwear only, except at night when he outgrew diapers, then we did pull-ups at night.

What process did you follow? I let him go naked (hardwood floors, easily cleaned). After he consistently used the potty naked, we moved on to underwear, then after he got that we added pants. We mostly stayed home during the naked phase, but during the underwear one he thought it was fun to check out public bathrooms EVERYWHERE we went so there were no issues with accidents.

How long did it take your son to become fully potty trained? He turned 5 in April and we just took away his nighttime pull-up last week. I still have to wake him up before I go to bed to potty or he will wet the bed. But the daytime process took about two weeks.

At what age did you begin potty training your son? The first time, just before age 3, he wasn't ready, so we stopped and tried again at 3y2mo.

Did you use a potty chair? yes

If yes, which one worked best for you? the baby bjorn

Did you use a potty seat at some point? no

Did you offer any rewards and if so, what? The first time we tried, but not the second time

What books came in handy in the process? The potty book for boys

What if any children's books did you find helpful?

Did you use pull ups or underwear? underwear

What process did you follow? I'm not sure what you're asking. When we successfully did the potty training, we just started by bringing him to the bathroom every 45 minutes or so, then an hour, then when he asked. It was warm out, so we let him walk around the house naked, too.

How long did it take your son to become fully potty trained? about 6 weeks until accidents became very few and far between, but he is not night trained. Our pediatrician said boys aren't considered to have a problem until they wet the bed past age 7. So we don't really care about that right now.

I didn't originally post this question, but I do appreciate the answers. My son is 2 1/2 and doesn't have much interest in the potty. Occassionally he will sit on the potty, but as of yet has not gone in the potty.

I also know the feeling of having to hear other moms say, "my child was potty trained at 2". It always made me wonder what was wrong with my kids. DD didn't potty train until almost three and it wasn't too bad.

At what age did you begin potty training your son?

I 'started' at about 2 1/2-3, but that was really just introducing the potty and trying to show him what it was for. He simply wasn't interested, and I'd learned from my first (a girl) that it MUST be done when they are ready, not when we want them to be ready.

Did you use a potty chair? If yes, which one worked best for you?

Yes. We had a nice sturdy Fisher Price one with a seat that could eventually be placed on the regular toilet. Nice and low, easy on/off for them as toddlers.

Did you offer any rewards and if so, what?

No rewards. Just lots of praise, especially stressing what a big boy he was. I didn't want to fall in to a trap where he decided every time he wanted a cookie or piece of candy he'd hop on the toilet. I wanted him to go when he NEEDED to go. Ultimately, there WAS a reward when he finally learned...the ability to KEEP all his big-boy things.

What books came in handy in the process?

I don't recall using any specific books.

Did you use pull ups or underwear?

Pull-ups to start, but what happened quickly is he became complacent...they kept him TOO dry! He'd wet them and wouldn't blink an eye. I ended up using the same technique I'd used with my daughter once he reached 3 1/2.

What process did you follow?

Basically, I chose a full week where I could remain home 24/7. On the first day when he got up, he was dressed in regular underwear. If he wet or soiled them, he lost a "big boy" privilege (watching his videos or playing with certain toys). Second time? Back to "nap time" because only big boys don't have to take naps. Sense a pattern? I told him that it was time to become a big boy and use the potty, and if HE chose not to be a big boy then he couldn't have/do any big boy things.

This is not always an easy process. I had to be prepared for multiple clothing changes because of wet and soiled pants. I had to be careful where in the house he played; I didn't want him soiling the sofa. Above all, I had to remain calm and consistently remind him that HE was in control. Once HE chose to become a big boy, all would go back to 'normal'.

This is exactly how I ended up training my daughter. It took 48 hours for both of them, and at the end of that time, they were BOTH dry all day and through the night. They never once had any nighttime accidents, and I believe the reason is because they trained at a later age...after 3...and had a better understanding of their body and the 'trigger' for needing to use the potty.

How long did it take your son to become fully potty trained?

Like I said....2 days. But this did not happen until he was 3 1/2 years old.

At what age did you begin potty training your son? I think it was around 2.5 during the summer

Did you use a potty chair? Yes, I have b/g twins so we had pottys in every bathroom

If yes, which one worked best for you? It was nothing fancy and had a wide bottom.

Did you use a potty seat at some point? I used the seat for traveling so there was always an acceptable option

Did you offer any rewards and if so, what? We sang "Jeffery went peepee in the potty, etc. with a drum he got to use. He didn't really care about the stickers

What books came in handy in the process? None but watched the sesame street potty video

What if any children's books did you find helpful? Can't remember the name - sorry

Did you use pull ups or underwear? No pull-ups. For me and them they were too much like pampers and didn't work for us

What process did you follow? We went to potty training boot camp for a week. If you pm me your email address I'll send you the journal I kept. Its rather funny.

How long did it take your son to become fully potty trained? I am going to say about 6 months or so

Please give any other suggestions you may have. DD and I will welcome any and alll advice. Thank you.
He won't go to college in a pamper and no matter what you do - you can't MAKE him pee!

I think you/your daughter should talk to him about becoming a "big boy" & not wearing diapers any more, for awhile before starting.

At what age did you begin potty training your son?
I started training my sons before they were 3.

Did you use a potty chair?
no

Did you use a potty seat at some point?
Yes, one that went on the toilet, soft seat. Used right from the start of potty training.

Did you offer any rewards and if so, what?
no

Did you use pull ups or underwear?
Thick training underwear during the day & pull ups at night. Once they didn't pee in the thick underwear, they switched to regular underwear.

What process did you follow?
We talked about becoming a "big boy" & not wearing diapers anymore. Naked at home, whenever possible. I think it is important to realize there will be many accidents and not to get upset or angry at the child.

Good luck to you, your daughter & grandson.

At what age did you begin potty training your son?
3 years and 2 months (when I was ready)

Did you use a potty chair?
Yes, I let him pick, he chose Diego

If yes, which one worked best for you?
I have not liked any potty seat and I transitioned my kids to the toilet with a ring as quickly as possible

Did you offer any rewards and if so, what?
Part of the process is treats for the day or two you train, but no specific reward

What books came in handy in the process?
Toilet Training in Less Than a Day - Azrin

What if any children's books did you find helpful?
We has a Dora one that flushes that he liked, but I don't think it helped at all
Did you use pull ups or underwear?
Underwear, pull-ups are just diapers

What process did you follow?
With my son I used Toilet Training in Less Than a Day

How long did it take your son to become fully potty trained?
Despite the name of the book it took three days, but we had tried other methods before and the author warned that it could take longer because of that. I started on Saturday and on Tuesday I was comfortable taking him out to eat and on errands.

Please give any other suggestions you may have.
I also purchased a doll that wets to help him make the connection. My suggestion is wait until you are both ready and then focus on potty training for a couple of days. Stretching it out over months isn't good for anyone.

At what age did you begin potty training your son?
I have 2 sons. They were both trained at 2

Did you use a potty chair?
No, I don't like them. I think they are dirty and disgusting. Plus I didn't want to train twice, once for the chair and once for the real potty.

If yes, which one worked best for you?

Did you use a potty seat at some point?
I bought a seat from a discount store. It did not have a big bump at the front because those can get caught on little parts and really hurt.

Did you offer any rewards and if so, what?
No

What books came in handy in the process?
I don't use parenting books

What if any children's books did you find helpful?
no

Did you use pull ups or underwear?
I used the old style training pants. They are thicker than undies but still get soaked if wet.
What process did you follow?
I ran out of diapers and decided not to buy more. I told them they would go on the potty like a big boy.
How long did it take your son to become fully potty trained?
2 weeks.

Please give any other suggestions you may have. DD and I will welcome any and alll advice. Thank you.

We went cold turkey so to speak. No diapers at night or during the day.

At what age did you begin potty training your son? 2 1/2 and in the summer

Did you use a potty chair? yes

If yes, which one worked best for you? a basic potty chair

Did you use a potty seat at some point? no

Did you offer any rewards and if so, what? yup, big boy underwear, different things.

What books came in handy in the process? n/a

What if any children's books did you find helpful? n/a

Did you use pull ups or underwear? underwear, thick cloth training pants.

What process did you follow? Well we talked about it and then I just never put diapers on them again. Day or night. Got them up at night to potty, and neither were bed wetters and were fully trained way before 3.

How long did it take your son to become fully potty trained? couple of weeks.

I was very patient with them. Both of my kids had frequent surgeries and hospital visits and we trained around that also.

I have twin boys, age 5 1/2.

At what age did you begin potty training your son?
I placed 2 potty chairs in their bathroom at age 2, and I would sit them on the potty just after taking them out of the tub after bath once or twice a week. Sometimes they would p (by accident, mostly), and we would clap and get excited. I also would read a book called ONCE UPON A POTTY, for boys - while they were sitting on the potties---only did this every now and then. It basically got them familiar with the process.

I started "real" potty training just after they turned 3. I bought ELMO underwear and put them on the boys while we were at home. I made sure we had nowhere to go for 2 days, so we could stay home in the underwear for a consistent length of time. I would ask them every hour or so if they felt they needed to go. One son went on himself twice that day. I cleaned him up quickly the 1st time, but the 2nd time I let him sit in it on a towel for about 5 minutes. After that he was completely potty trained. I put pull-ups on him at night for about a month, and I think he may have had an accident in the pull-up one night, but that was it. I also put pull-ups on him during the day when we were out and about for about 2 weeks, but he never had an accident again. Now, the other son was completely different. He kept having accidents during those first 2 days of training, and he was obviously miserable and not ready. I put him back in diapers, and tried again about 4 months later. By then, he was ready and potty trained within a few days.

Did you use a potty chair?
Yes. I started out with each of them having a potty chair because I had 2 kids, and only 1 toilet. IMO---If you don't use a potty chair, but decide to use a potty seat instead, just make sure you have a good sized step stool in front so that their feet reach it. They get scared when their feet can't touch the floor.

If yes, which one worked best for you?
DON'T buy the one I bought. Like an idiot I saw that one that makes music whenever they tinkle (I think it's by Fisher Price), and I thought "oh, that will be fun for them". NOT. What happens is that they stick their hands underneath their bottoms to make the music go off or they stand up and keep putting their hands in and out to hear the music, so they are more concerned about making music than making #1 or #2. I took the batteries out of that thing immediately. Just buy a run of the mill, plain old potty chair that doesn't have a lot of parts, and can be easily emptied and cleaned.

Did you use a potty seat at some point?
Yes. Once they were really trained I got rid of the potty chairs & just used one of those potty seats...much easier and cleaner. Just make sure you pick up that potty seat daily and clean under it. Boys will get p everywhere & it can get really gross under there!

Did you offer any rewards and if so, what?
Yes. At the time McDonald's Happy Meals had Pirates of the Carribean toys...one of which was a little pirates chest with a key to open it. I took the pirate's chest and placed m&m's inside. Each time the boys went potty, they got to use the key to open the special treasure box and get an m&m. Also, I had a bubble maker machine (it was a battery operated Stitch bubble maker), and we would turn on the bubble maker machine every time they did #2.

What books came in handy in the process?
didn't use any parents' books.

What if any children's books did you find helpful?
ONCE UPON A POTTY for boys

Did you use pull ups or underwear?
Underwear for the actual potty training. I find if you use pull-ups they know they can go in them like a diaper. They impede the process. I would only use pull-ups in the beginning for night-time and for when you have to be away from home. When at home, always use underwear.

What process did you follow?
see above.

How long did it take your son to become fully potty trained?
see above.

Honestly, I think if a kid is ready, they will take to it fairly quickly when you try the potty training with the underwear. You'll KNOW if they aren't ready.

At what age did you begin potty training your son?
Poop-trained at 2.5 -- didn't take very long (2 weeks -- very few accidents).
Pee-trained at 3. Took longer.

Did you use a potty chair?
No - Grandma bought us one but we didn't want to clean it. We used the potty seat from the getgo and it was much easier -- just make sure to get a stepstool for each potty.

Did you use a potty seat at some point?
Yes. We bought one for each toilet he would be using.

Did you offer any rewards and if so, what?
For poo-training, he was easy -- all he wanted was to pull out the Kandoo wipes and he was happy.
For pee-training, he had already developed an obsession with Thomas the train, so I told him that he could have one once he did 2 weeks without an accident. One day at target he made the action-reward connection and told me he was ready to pee in the potty and no more pullups. I would let him hold the unopened box when he successfully peed so he knew I was serious about the reward. He got Thomas in two weeks. We bought extra accessories for each week he would go with no accidents.

What books came in handy in the process?
My big boy potty.

What if any children's books did you find helpful?
didn't try any others.

Did you use pull ups or underwear?
pullups and underwear on top.

What process did you follow?
For poo -- we would watch for the signs and then rush him to the potty and hold him (so he had something to brace against). Then effusely praise. Very few poo problems. (I would have him go proudly tell his dad that he pooed too and he would heap on additional praise).

For pee -- daycare wanted to train him beofre 3yo -- he wasn't ready. We decided we would wait until he told us he was ready. Which he did. We would read the book and when I realized Thomas was a good hook - that did it. Peer pressure didn't work on him nor did the cold turkey (no pullups -- which is what daycare tried). Once he was ready -- he was ready.

How long did it take your son to become fully potty trained?
Again, potty training is kinda like writing a term paper. the earlier you start it the longer you work on it if you aren't ready. Once HE decided he was ready - a couple of weeks for us to be truly comfortable taking him places without an emergency pullup on. If we had forced the pee-training I would be responding 3 months.

At what age did you begin potty training your son? around 3 or so

Did you use a potty chair? NO, they had no interest in that whatsoever

If yes, which one worked best for you? n/a

Did you use a potty seat at some point? yes, with two of my sons. They used a padded seat that fit on top od the regular toilet seat and a child's stool to get on the pot. My oldest son didn't want to use one....just the normal toilet seat.

Did you offer any rewards and if so, what? Yeah...sticker charts and treats after getting so many stickers (5 or so).

What books came in handy in the process? no

What if any children's books did you find helpful? none, my kids thought those were kinda dumb....
Did you use pull ups or underwear? both...but IMO underwear is a better deterant to going in your pants. If you go with pull-ups try to get the plain white ones and NOT the "fun" ones like Buzz Lightyear....my sons liked the Buzz pull-ups too much so it wasn't an incentive to them to transition out of them!:scared1:

What process did you follow? I just kinda let them set their own pace...no stress. My mom told me not to worry about it because they won't go off to college in diapers/pull-ups...:lmao: Meaning it will happen when they are ready and yes it WILL happen!!:thumbsup2

How long did it take your son to become fully potty trained? I ca't remember exactly but no very long at all!
Please give any other suggestions you may have. DD and I will welcome any and alll advice.

My best advice is to follow his lead, don't push him, and don't get stressed about it. Things will fall into place that way!:thumbsup2

At what age did you begin potty training your son?
23 mos, 26 mos, 3+
Did you use a potty chair? yes, initially

If yes, which one worked best for you? any

Did you use a potty seat at some point? yes

Did you offer any rewards and if so, what? mostly praise, the potty dance, etc

What books came in handy in the process? Toilet Training in less than a Day

What if any children's books did you find helpful? any I found + DVDs

Did you use pull ups or underwear? underwear only

What process did you follow? Toilet Training in less than a Day (sl modified)

How long did it take your son to become fully potty trained? 1 wk, less than 1 wk, 3y + child I babysat- it was many months for him

Please give any other suggestions you may have. DD and I will welcome any and alll advice. Thank you.
I'm not sure later is always better, many friends I know are "potty training" for months w/ 3 yr olds. At 2 it was easy, one pooped in his pants once, one twice. By 3 they are very used to ignoring it and tend to have more control issues. I never went back and forth and focused on them for 2 solid days, but the next week we were done-painless.
Also, it seems best (personal and teaching a 2 yo class experience) to teach boys to sit. There are many boys who have "pooping issues". They are almost always standers.
Good luck! Remember it is the rare child who goes to K in diapers (I do know one), so don't stress too much.

At what age did you begin potty training your son? He had his potty chair at like 20 months, but it was really to get him used to the idea. His older cousin had one (who's 8 mo older) and he wanted one. We started seriously training while I am home from school for the summer.

Did you use a potty chair? Yup

If yes, which one worked best for you? I think ours is a First step. One you can flip over and use as a stool and has a removable top for the BIG potty.

Did you use a potty seat at some point? He used both about 50/50

Did you offer any rewards and if so, what? We started with M & Ms and graduated to Dum-Dums and tattoos (those were only for #2) Sadly, DSs main motiviation is a trip to WDW in the fall with the grandparents. I'm SO using this to an advantage.... DS tells people that if he wears pull-ups he gets to ride a rollercoaster in FL!

What books came in handy in the process? Didn't use any

What if any children's books did you find helpful? see above

Did you use pull ups or underwear? He mainly wears underwear during the day and a diaper for naps and bedtime.

What process did you follow? I started by requiring him to potty when he woke up, before bed, and before meals. Any other times were a fabulous bonus. Day by day he started using the potty mainly for #2 and we're working on #1. He's had 2 accidents in 2 weeks (both b/c daddy didn't make him go). I'll ask him every 1.5 hr or so. We also told him that he could have "privacy" to go if he decided to use the potty. If he pooped or peed in his diaper, we'd be watching.

How long did it take your son to become fully potty trained? I'd say DS is about 90% at the moment. He's stayed dry through the night for the last week. I've not changed a dirty diaper in 2 weeks! I won't say he's fully done until I have to stop reminding him to go, but I think he's close and he turns 3 next weekend.

Please give any other suggestions you may have. DD and I will welcome any and alll advice. Thank you.

We've been trying to make him feel as proud of himself as we can. Today we took a special shopping trip to buy underwear that he got to pick out himself. He knows that if he's ready for Pull-ups (though since he's in undies he gets to skip that part...) then he gets to go on a special trip. Maybe find somewhere special not too far from home and use it as leverage. I think your daughter is right to not try to PT on the road, but you never know what can be a trigger. My friend's son decided he only wanted to use the potty at WDW, but he had started before they left.

Good luck! Oh... and when he's ready to start standing up, we toss a couple of Cheerios in the pot for target practice. He makes them "swim"

I think they do that so they can say their kid is better than yours... though I whole heartedly believe that there are some kids who can train early. Boys always take longer!

When we started with my requirements (of 4 trips a day) if he wouldn't go, he'd run around naked until he went. Now he goes when he's asked. I knew he was close to being ready, but I promise, he wasn't ready to train until this summer.

Stay with it, but be encouraging.
