Potty Training help?

We acheived it with bribery as well!!
Mini smarties worked for us.
In April I wrote in despair as I had tried and failed miserably (put enormous pressure on my then 25 months dd to acheive it in 4 days over easter). Now 3 months later and a much more relaxed approach and my dd is dry even during her lunchtime sleep. It took us 3 weeks of some accidents but now she asks for the toilet and has cracked it. Very proud of her I am!!
Back to the bibery - 1 mini smartie for a wee and 3 for a poop. We are not a big chocolate family so that is probably why it worked. I figured that they are so small that even 5 a day (which she rarely got to) was less than a chocolate button.
I have re-negotiated her smartie contract now so she only gets them occasionally but she still likes to ask.

Good for you! That's awesome!:goodvibes

We had previously tried M&Ms, but he was just losing interest. That's why I came up with the prize box. Still working very well, we did have an accident today, but that's to be expected.

Stop using diapers. That's what we did with my son. If we put a diaper on him he'd go in it. If we took it off he'd use the potty. Literally in one week of going "commando" he was potty trained by 2 and half. He was also night trained before three. Now my dd, she's 2 and half and is day trained for pee, but she will NOT poop in the potty. So if anyone has any suggestions for that, i'd love to hear 'em.

Have you considered something like the prize chart/box that I posted?

Every kid is different, it's all about figuring out what makes them tick, and them being ready to do it. DS has known how to do it for months, but the desire to do it on his own didn't come until I sweetened the pot, so to speak.:goodvibes

Hi everyone,

Don't know if anyone is still subscribed here, but I just wanted to give an update, since it's July, and that was our fateful deciding month.

...

Mission Completion, as the Einsteins would say! I know we have more work ahead of us, but I am so thrilled that he'll be able to go to preschool, and to take our very first Disney vacation without diapers. :woohoo:
CONGRATULATIONS to you and your DS!!!

Do your kids always insist on taking their underwear all the way off before going to the potty?
Yes, very often DS will take his pants and underpants totally off, even if they're not wet or dirty. The only time it really bothers me is if we are in a hurry, or if we are in a public restoom. He insists on sitting on the floor to put his clothes back on and I hate the thought of him sitting on those filthy floors.

I guess I'll give an update, too. DS has actually been PT for a few months now. At parent/teacher conferences at the begining of May his teachers were quite impressed at how quickly DS got there. He only had accidents at school a couple times during those last few months.

Afternoons and weekends are another story, though. DS does know what to do, but when he's tired or involved in something he forgets to "listen" to his body. And with a 1yo around, I often forget to urge or make DS go to the bathroom. The accidents usually happen while DS is either on his way to the bathroom or once he's there trying to pull his pants down. I'm really tired of wet carpet and can't wait until we're past this stage so we can get the carpets a good cleaning. On the positive side, though, DS is very independent so he will get himself changed by himself after an accident. Often I don't even know when he's off to the bathroom until he comes back to the room in a totally different set of clothes.

Oh, I totally understand. DH and I decided yesterday we need to buy our DS some more of those athletic, mesh type shorts, because they're so easy to pull on and off.

The reason we decided this is because DS went into the bathroom, didn't want any help, had the door closed, and could not get his shorts down. Well, he couldn't hold it and ended up peeing in them. And since we're working towards independence here, we want to facilitate with easy clothing.

I felt bad, too, I mean he knew what he was doing and just couldn't get the band down on these "normal" khaki shorts.

We have four pairs of the athletic ones currently, and there's a brand from Kohl's I love, but the only colors they have left in his size are gray...eh...or red...we don't own any red because DS has beautiful auburn red hair, so it just doesn't go well. I guess I may have to buy some gray, because I know we're going to need more than four pairs of shorts when we go to DisneyWorld in the fall!:lmao:

Maybe you all might have some suggestions as to where else I could find this type of short for him?

I stocked up on elastic waist shorts, too!! I couldn't believe how many pairs of shorts we had in size 3T that had BUTTONS at the waist! What three year old has time for buttons when they have to pee???? Anyway, I bought the mesh-type shorts on clearance at Kmart last week in red, gray, black, and navy. I also bought some denim and cotton (khaki, camo, blue, Circo brand) elastic waist shorts at Target that he can easily pull up and down. My Dh thinks I'm crazy for the amount of shorts we have now, but we go through them quickly some days! I'm working on teaching him how to do buttons now, but I'm still afraid of putting him in those shorts! Oh yeah, check Kohl's, too. They aare probably clearing out the summer stuff now, too. Don't wait too long or the stores will only be selling long pants!! :confused3

You know, I actually have the Circo brand from Target and those are the ones that we have trouble with! :lmao:

I think the band is just hard for him. I know he'll get the hang of it, but it's a nightmare when he's trying to go and can't, kwim?

I haven't checked Kmart, and I do have one near me, so I'll have to take a look there.

So I realize it has been a loooong time since anyone posted on this thread but wanted to share that Disney World trained my last two children!!! They were so afraid they would have to leave the park if they messed their pants, and with and adult/child ratio of 1/1 (never happens in 'real' life) we hardly had to change pull-ups at all. And now that we are home, all the kids are in big kid pants nearly every day! Thank goodness! I was startin' to think we would have to change their pants before they received their HS diploma!
