New to the slow cooker and would love some hints on how to do a beef roast in the slow cooker. How long? How big of a roast? How much liquid?

Thanks, in advance!

We throw in a roast, a cup of water, cover it with seasoning (we use Cookie's Flavor Enhancer), add potatoes and carrots......

Usually 3-5 hours depending on how big the roast is. Never failed!

I would have thought it would take a lot longer in a slow cooker? Again...I am new to this! THANKS!

What size roast do you cook? Is the 3 - 5 hours on high or low?

For example.... a couple of nights ago we cooked a 4 pound bottom round roast (not the greatest cut of meat, but in the crock pot you can do wonders!). I put it in at 1:30 p.m. on high. By 5:30 it was ready to eat. DH does the "fork test" - if you can stick a fork in the meat and turn it, the meat is done.

Usually we can tell by smell when the meat is done.

Good luck!!

Thanks! I gotta try that.

Or try 1 pkg of onion soup mix, a little water, and 1 can cream of mushroom soup over a roast. I usually cook mine all day on low. The soups make a gravy that you can serve over mashed potatoes. It's yummy.

I think I got this one here a while back:

Place roast in bottom of crockpot, sprinkle with one packabe of dry italian dressing, one package of dry ranch dressing and one package of dry brown gravy mix, add half cup water, I usually add 2 pkgs of the gravy and 1 cup of water,
Sometimes I just do the roast and make mashed potatoes, and sometimes I add cut up potatoes and carrots on top of the roast,

I never add water when cooking a roast in the crockpot. I find that the roast has its own water and if I add water it is way too much water! I also love the 3 packet roast (1 packet of ranch dressing mix, italian dressing mix and french onion dressing mix) which I mix together in a measuring cup. I quarter some potatoes and put them in the bottom of the pot and then sprinkle some of the dressing mix over them, put the roast on the top and poke some holes in it, while spreading the rest of the dressing mix over the top of the roast. Pop on the top of the cooker and cook for about 5 hours on low. The seasonings make the potatoes and roast just melt in your mouth. You could add carrots to the potatoes too if you wanted. YUMMY! We make this at least once a week in the winter (normally on Sunday). Enjoy!

When I was working in an office I would put a roast in the crock pot before I left for work around 8:00 am. I used a pkg of Lipton Onion soup mix, cup or so of water and salt & pepper. It cooked all day on low so by the time I got home at 5:30, it was done. Fix some mashed potatoes and a couple other veggies and good to go!
A friend of mine told me she used a can of Coke in her crock pot.
I tried it but didn't find it to be any better than the soup mix.
I have also used Cream of Mushroom soup or Golden Mushroom soup and found it to be really, REALLY good. I have found if you put the cut up potatoes and carrots on top of the roast and not in the water, they don't get good and done. I also throw in a can of mushrooms.
I think the secret is to cook it on low for several hours.
GOOD LUCK!

I tried this last night to great success- thanks! Although I substituted golden mushroom soup for the cream of mushroom and just threw cut potatoes in with it.

Perfect timing for me as I was just wondering about this - these all sound good! Does it matter what kind of roast it is? I get confused on that. Also, how many pounds do you get?

Would like to hear on this too!

Top is better than bottom - but they all turn out good. We usually do a 3-4 pound roast for our family of four (two teen boys  ).

Well, since everyone here is throwing in their recipe, I guess I'll share mine too. Mine is pretty much like the others listed, although the last few times I have tweaked it a little and it keeps getting better.

First, I season the raw chuck roast and sear it in a dutch oven
then in a seperate bowl, I mix one can of cream of mushroom, one can of cream of onion and one envelope of lipton's onion mushroom soup mix, turn your crock pot on low if in the early am, then add the roast on top. I also throw in a few dashes of lea and perrins worcestershire sauce for flavor, let that cook a few hour, then I added a bunch of pearl onions, chopped celery, baby carrots, and baby yukon gold potatoes, and let that all cook together. It was the best roast.... I served it over rice or by itself. Also, on a more regular basis I do all of the above except the pearl onions, celery and baby yukons, I add a bag of baby carrots in the last few hours and serve it with mashed potatoes. It is very easy and tasty. BTW Just recently I have discovered yukon gold potatoes, they are so tasty and make the best mashed potatoes ever, if you have never tried them, you should, you will never buy Idahos or russets again.
Enjoy
Kim

I use an envelope of Lipton's onion soup mix and a can of jellied cranberry sauce. I somnetimes add sliced carrots and green beans. I usually put it in around 7:30 a.m. before I go to work, and it's done about 5-5:30. I cook it on the low setting. I've got a roast chicken in my crockpot right now- I seasoned it with rotisserie chicken seasoning and cajun seasoning (both by McCormick). my kids love this recipe:D

I go to a local butcher shop and buy a boneless chuck roast, usually about 3 lbs. It's pretty inexpensive and excellent for the crock pot or in a roasting bag. I also use the cream of mushroom soup and onion soup mix. I put on low in the morning and leave it for the day.

I have another roast in the freezer and I think I am going to try the 3 packet recipe next. It sounds great!

that makes the difference between good and great, in my book, and that is browning the meat first! Yes, I know it dirties another pan, but you can deglaze it in to the crockpot and then wipe it out with a paper towel! I think you'll find it improves the finished product enough to make it worth while.

We love roast in the crockpot and have done it several of the ways mentioned. I do have a way that I make it every so often. Take your roast and cover it with a layer of mayonaise. Spread the mayo all over the roast and place down in the crockpot. It cannot be fat free or low fat mayo because the fat in the mayo is what tenderizes the meat. I cook it on low all day so the mayo doesn't burn. It makes a wonderful gravy.
