Postponed trip thanks everyone for their advice

So you would be ok sitting next to a vomiting feverish child for eight hours? There is a reason trip insurance exists and this is the reason. For around $125 you can insure your trip so you lose nothing if you have to change or cancel. If you can't afford to change a trip last minute it's foolish not to have insurance. It's cruel to bring a vomiting child onto a plane, for the child an everyone around them. Cutting molars is not vomiting. And there is a nasty stomach big going around parts of the us. So it may not be "just strep". Not to mention "just strep" can have complications like Scarlett fever, not something you want to deal with on vacation. But hey, its really all about you isn't it.

Not thrilled - but you're handling money, touching the seats on the airplane, breathing in the airplane air - you're exposed to germs all day long! Many illnesses are very contagious before you even develope symptoms.

You could get on a plane (or go anywhere else) thinking you're fine and boom! Some stomach bug can hit you out of nowhere!

You do what you can - eat well, get rest and wash your hands often!

I was in a similar situation for our 1st trip! DD got strep the day before we left. Went to school and was sent home. Luckily the doctor squeezed us I. And was kind enough to prescribe a just in case prescription for other dd. We did fly and the one with strep felt better after the antibiotics, but did complain of ear pain when we landed after on long flight. Took a little while for her ears to unplug. By our 1st disney, dd was ready to go explore disney! Good luck!

Vomit smells. There are unpleasant noises associated with it. It can splatter on others. Good hygiene works in most circumstances but not when sitting next to someone vomiting for eight hours. Many people become sick to the stomach themselves when they smell vomit.

Well vomit happens - a lot on planes! That's why they have barf bags in every seat. You might be exposed to vomit, vomit smells and noises because someone gets sick from flying.

What crappy timing. If you have a quick care go tonight and see if u can get your son abx. I am sure he has it too. Make sure you give your dd another dose tonight before bed and one right before take off tomorrow. She should be feeling much better by Thursday am. Make sure you bring enough motrin and benadryl for your entire trip. Give doses of both before you board and they should sleep and be comfortable. Continue to repeat this every 6 hrs until they are feeling better. Benadryl will also help with nausea. Bring the powered mix of Gatorade with you so u can mix that up for them when you need it. You can buy bottled water at the resort and all airports. You will probably have to be flexible with your plans and readjust park days etc until they feel better. Do not go and be rushed. Take it at their pace. Blessings to you all. I had heard on one of the Dis Boards that some parent had a child who was pretty sick while on property and they had an MD come to their resort and they were treated and very happy with the service.

In September 2012, we were all set to head down to Disney when I started to feel really off :rolleyes2 My eyes were really red and a bit itchy, I had chills and a slight fever and my throat was really scratchy. I ignored it and then proceeded with the cleaning of the entire house, the packing of the clothes...you name it, I did it. Throughout the day I progressively started to feel worse and by midnight my throat was so raw that I could barely talk and my fever spiked to 104 and I knew that it was more than just a cold or bug. Dh talked me into going to the ER, so we asked my mom to watch dd (then 3) while we went. As soon as the ER doctor looked at my throat I knew that it was strep. He told me point blank that it was strep and that there was no need to do a culture. He then told me that the right side of my throat was so swollen that it was nearly completely closed off. I was dehydrated, I had conjunctivitis in both eyes and an ear infection. They actually wanted to admit me because of my dehydration and due to the swelling of my throat, but I protested because I was going to DISNEY :crazy2: He looked at me and said, "Sure you are". I told him that I was dead serious and he just shook his head lol. I ended up getting 2 steroid shots and an antibiotic shot in the hip as well as oral antibiotics and ear and eye drops. They went ahead and gave me a bag of fluids through an IV and then sent me on my way. Fast forward to eight hours later after taking the oral meds and a nice long nap and I was honestly feeling back to normal.

I would go ahead and get your DS checked for strep and check into antibiotics for him as well as someone else has stated above. Usually antibiotics for strep work fast (like miracle fast) and so long as your dd has been on them for around 12 hours, I wouldn't worry so much. Hope everyone feels better :goodvibes

There is a difference between taking and actively sick vomiting child onto a plane and someone unexpectedly getting airsick. It also about common courtesy. Where did that go? If you are sick stay home. If you can't afford to change plans last minute but trip insurance. People research the heck out of Disney. Making touring plans. Book dining six months in advance but spend no time thinking about trip insurance. And then when something happens they don't know what to do. So instead of keeping their sick vomiting child home they bring him on an eight hour plane ride and then a week or so of heavy touring exposing not only everyone else to his germs but exposing him to theirs while his immune system is already busy fighting the first infection, running the risk of prolonging the illness, getting a secondary infection or complication.

Exactly. It does stink that the OP has sick kids. However their well being should come before any vacation. Hopefully they will be well enough to fly. And if not hopefully the OP will put their well being ahead of saving a few bucks. It is not an easy situation to be in, and I wish them good luck and speedy recovery.

If you insist on taking them and they haven't been on the antibiotics for 24 hours I certainly hope you are putting masks on them before getting on the plane. It is irresponsible to take known contagious kids into a closed environment and expose all those people to strep. What if there is some one on there that just finished chemo? or a make a wish kid? they get exposed and by the time they get to Florida for their vacation they are deathly ill.

Get masks, I"m sure your DR's office had them out with the sign to have your child put them on if they were contagious. They weren't doing this for no reason.

You can typically change even non-refundable flights for a fee. Usually around $75 a ticket. Not a small sum, but certainly not $1500.

.....

You're way off - a typical change fee on a domestic ticket is $200. Add any additional fare cost for the new flight to that. The OP could very well be looking at a $1,500 cost.

That said, I personally wouldn't be taking a vacation with two kids with strep throat. A good example of why you should consider trip insurance.

OP, hope your kids are better soon.

If you haven't already get him to a dr asap...whether that means bringing him to aftercare or the ER now or what. If he has strep he needs to be on antibiotics before you are exposing him to all those people but I just really have to reiterate what the person above me said. It is really irresponsible to expose so many people to strep in a closed environment so if you do go, please bring a mask and some antibacterial wipes.

Honestly, this is exactly why we always buy trip insurance. It would suck to actually have to reschedule a trip but these things happen. I just really don't think a kid that is puking will have much fun in Disney. We saw kids puking twice in Disney, once on a bus PACKED FULL to the park, poor kid puked on at least 3 unrelated adults around her....and once in line at rope drop for Hollywood Studios. Those kids did not look like they were having fun and neither did the parents.

Not really. My family travels by air quite frequently (my husband over 1 million miles on United alone over the past 6 years) and none of us had ever seen anyone vomit on a plane. Sure, it happens, but it doesn't happen a lot!

To the OP:

Glad you could postpone the trip! Hope you are still going soon, but most importantly hope your kids are feeling much better very soon.

Hope when you do go you have a great and healthy time.

As someone who catches strep if anyone even says the word around her, thank you for not going.

Has it recently gone up? I changed tickets not so long ago, and Delta charged us $75 a ticket. And Southwest doesn't charge a fee at all.

OP--I know it wasn't an easy decision--the trip we had to postpone was when my niece ended up having her appendix out right before we were supposed to go to WDW. It isn't easy, and isn't any fun. Maybe you could add something extra to the trip, something to look forward too.

.....

The change ticket fee for a domestic flight on Delta is $200.00. While Southwest doesn't charge a change fee, you get a travel credit which must be used within a year of the original booking date, plus you will pay any additional fee if the ticket price increases.

Yes--$200 change fee! we were shocked to find this out last year when we had to change a flight--I thought is was still $75. It was cheaper to book a new flight than change the old one plus pay the difference between price increase! Unfortunately Delta's main hub is at our airport---and no direct flights on SW which we LOVE from here to MCO :(

To the OP--glad you got everything figured out and hope the kids are better soon!
