A good hoop skirt is made from a flexible boning. It has several hoops and you fold in on itself. Basically - while it is laying flat you pinch it in at the center and twist half of it over to make a figure eight. Then fold the smaller circles on op of one another. If that makes any sense. I'm a historical costumer and I wear a LOT of hoop skirts.

That being said, your daughter's dress is ADORABLE!!!!! I wish I could make something that stellar for myself for mnsshp. While concept and design of costuming I get, I have little ability to actually make anything.

THAT makes way more sense! I was picturing it smaller fitting in on self like of circles smaller as it goes in.. but it was the figure 8 I was missing. I was thinking " I still don't see how that will fit into a locker lol. Thanks helps to to find what I'm looking for!

I've thought about making one in the past but I think I have enough on my plate to finish right now :)

Planning on going as the 11th Doctor, and pulled the costume out for this fall's WDW Dapper Day at Disney's Hollywood Studios.

If you come up with any ideas let me know too :confused3

If they're costume hoops (I use hoop steel when making costumes for my students--- I will post a photo of the belle dress I made after I finish this post!!!) it's pretty flexible hoop steel-- I can wrap it and make it fit in smaller spaces.... And if yours are the hoops that you BUY (as in you didn't make them yourself using specific hoop steel), they might even be plastic-- they MIGHT fit into a locker... Do you have a photo of the hoops?

With many of them, there is an opening in the casing for each layer of boning as well. You can pull the hoop part out and coil it into a much smaller circle. But we've folded it upon itself too. It just distorts the shape a bit if you keep it folded on itself too long. Pulling the hoops out and and coiling into a smaller circle keeps the shape nicely.

And you can buy a 3 hoop skirt and completely take out the top 2 hoops, leaving just the bottom one. It loses a little in shape but is a lot less to muck with in the parks and for packing.

You are officially my favorite. I'd love to go as Donna or Pond but without a Doctor or Rory, it doesn't translate as well.

Very creative! Craft foam? I love that stuff.

Yes, originally I was going with fabric that was closer to the color of the candlesticks, but it looked awful!! Craft foam paper is so much more forgiving.

The fabric will fold down just fine, especially if you put it in a space bag and roll the air out.

I'd look at getting a real hoop skirt. You can get them on Ebay for around $15 to $20 shipped. And if there are other princess gowns in her future you'll be happy to have it.

Does the space saver bag cause a lot of wrinkles? Or does it just depend on the material?

It depends. I actually think that if you're careful about how you put it in the bag it prevents more wrinkles than it causes. If you can fold it fairly flat, then roll the air out, it's better than just stuffing it in a bag or loose in the locker. But there will be some wrinkles either way.

Good Tips, Thank You :goodvibes

So this is the Belle costume that I made for the school I work at's production of Beauty and the Beast last year. We rented everything EXCEPT this gown- I couldn't find ANY that I liked, and I KNEW I could make it better!! I found the perfect pattern and voila!

I have the gown (and the hoops!) still hanging in my office, actually!

The hoops are actually SUPER flexible. What I like about the design is that the pattern for the hoops allowed things to press against her, but the skirt didn't raise in the opposite direction. Brilliant designs, I was very happy with them.

Very Beautiful! I love how you have your own twist but that its still clearly Bell :)

Thanks!! I REALLY hate the Belle costume's swags-- I think they're really strange! So I did a twist on the Broadway dress and the deluxe child's gown that was sold two years ago. The satin underskirt we did pickups by hand to create the "swags", and then we put the gold glitter net over that and did pickups by hand on THAT. We were really happy with how it came out!

that is lovely!!! i always liked the broadway dress more from a design perspective.

(and good hoops and a balanced dress will just push in and not out, how awkward would it have been for historical girls if that were the case?)

when are you going?

Read in another thread that there will be another 11 and an Amy there as well on the 21st. SO EXCITED. I hope I run into all of you. LoL

I won't be there until oct 8. Fingers crossed I luck into a blue box. Unless I just shrug into my red leather jacket and decide to o as Emma Swan.

Here's a preview of our not-quite-finished costumes for the party on the 18th next week. We're nerds.

We're doing two parties, and I'm really torn as to what to wear on the second one (on Halloween). I'm not a super girly person but I'd love to wear a froofy princess dress or even dress as Tinker Bell. The problem is, I can't really find a pre-made princess dress I like, and uh... Tinker Bell's dress is a little short. And by a little, I mean "a lot". No one needs to see that much of my leg! So right now I'm looking at other options. I found a couple ghostly costumes that make me think of Haunted Mansion ghosts so I might go with one of those.

For the first party I'm being lazy and wearing my Chip kigurumi. I'm super excited to wear it while getting my picture taken with Chip and Dale before the party starts. It's not overly warm, but if I do get too hot I can just take it off. It takes up surprisingly little room in a backpack.

I don't have a picture of me wearing mine, but I have the product shot.

The only downside is that the tail is really low so I'll probably end up getting it dirty. Plus when I sit down I have to make sure the tail is arranged right otherwise it ends up between my legs and looks a little... well you probably get the idea.
