I just booked my sons and his girlfriends return flight from MCO and used my Southwest CC points. I also used my SW CC to pay for EBC for both of them. My question is will he have to pay a bag fee as the credit card I used to book with is in my name and he currently doesn't have a Southwest card.

Yes, bag fees will be due: the way it reads it's related to the cardholder being on the reservation, not just the card used to book the reservation.

Well, after month's of monitoring it, my flight for 3 weeks out just dropped lower than I've ever seen it. Our Basic fare just saved me another 7500 points and no worries on the bag fees since we have the credit cards. Still weird, though, that now I might as well stop monitoring that flight since I can't just change it again if the points go any lower. Or, I guess I could if I want to eat the $15.60 taxes and fees...

Not liking this new world of non-changeable basic flights. What am I supposed to do with my morning coffee if not monitor my SW flights for points reductions??? I can't be left alone with my early morning thoughts.

I just canceled a couple of flights and rebooked them....they refund the taxes to original payment form (I used points so easy to cancel)

How are they handling people who bought their tickets before May and seat assignments? I keep reading it starts mid 2025 but no exact info. We are flying in August.

Southwest’s information release states seating assignments will be sold in the 2nd half of 2025 for flights that occur in 2026. There is no chance assigned seating will start anytime this year. Or apply to any seats sold prior to May.

yes. I wanted to test the waters- when I canceled I still had the 2 options for taxes I chose refund to original payment.

We have a flight in November, yet when we bought tickets (in April, I think) the website specifically said that luggage was free for the first two pieces. If you booked the flight before May 28, you will not be charged for baggage.

Make sure not to make any changes to this reservation. If you do, it will switch to the new policy and you won't get your free bags.

We flew May 29 and June 4 on flights where the last modifications (to consolidate nonexpiring credits) were made well prior to May 28. We were not charged for bags. Especially on May 29 I was worried we might be charged if all the system kinks weren’t worked out, but we did curbside checkin/bag drop and that was fine. So was June 4 when curbside was unavailable and we had to use a kiosk. As long as you make no changes to your itinerary it should be fine.

I have the SW Visa card and I am wondering what the baggage situation will be when I fly home. Will I get one bag free? Two bags free? Do I pay for bags and then get reimbursed? My daughter is flying with me and she paid cash for her flight (WGA fare) and she also booked pre-5/28. She did not do any modifications because she has no use for the flight credit. I am trying to figure out how much luggage we will bring between the two of us and it will depend on how many checked bags we will need to pay for, if any.

The current language indicates that you will get one free checked bag. It does NOT say that you have to pay and get reimbursed (that was an earlier draft). Here's the current footnote:

11First Checked Bag Free: The primary Rapid Rewards® Credit Cardmember and up to eight Passengers traveling on the same reservation are each eligible to receive their first standard checked bag free. Cardmembers should allow up to 14 days for card status to be updated in their Rapid Rewards account to be eligible for this benefit. To receive their first standard checked bag free, the primary Cardmember must include their Rapid Rewards number in their reservation. The first standard checked bag free is not available on flights booked with a partner carrier. Service charges for oversized, overweight, and extra baggage may apply. I’m glad I checked this thread. The May 28th date slipped by me and I continued to check flight prices when the 50% email came out this week. I’m glad I didn’t find anything as it would mean losing our free checked luggage for Aug flight.

Time to break the habit of checking often for flight price drops!

What are the chances Chase/SWA will increase the annual fee on the credit card since so many people want it to have the bag fees waived.

Wondering if I should apply now, although I am getting free bags for my December trip.

I have no doubt that was all part of the plan to increase revenue/GP.

I think it will be coming in the future but not sure when.
I believe I saw on reddit or somewhere here on disboards that they were thinking of raising the $150 card to $225.
Right now the $150 card is essentially only $5 or so more than the lowest card offered when you factor in the $75 annual SW credit plus anniversary points.
Hopefully if raised they increase the credit or something else.

This is all so confusing! I had a flight in Oct I booked in April, flight was canceled they never let me know that it was canceled just happened to go on the web site and saw it was canceled. Note on flight said I can rebook 2 times up to 14 days before flight with no extra cost or cancel for full refund. I added another day to my vacation! Now I am wondering if that means I have to pay for baggage?!?!
