Hi,

We have a trip coming up next month (Oct 1-10) and will be staying at the Poly. Since this will probably be our last trip for a while, we want to do something special and are thinking about having the kids' portrait done by one of the portrait artists that work out of the resorts. Last time we were there, I remember there being someone at the GF. Does anyone know of others?? I'm also trying to remember what the average cost was.... I know it went up with the number of people.

Thanks!

Karen

I had one done last year of my son at the asm IT WAS AROUND $30, WELL WORTH IT HE LOVED IT!

We plan on having a caricature of each of the kids made this time as well, but we also want a "real" portrait. As I recall, portraits ran in the 3-digits.

I am sorry I didn't realize you meant a "portrait" My fault, I just got excited when I thought I had a solution for ya!!! hehehehe
Once again sorry! :D :) :)

My kids' portraits were done in the Beach Club lobby in 1996 by the artist Echo Keller. They are done in pastels (not watercolor). Very beautiful, well-done portraits. They are framed and hanging side-by-side in a hallway and we get compliments whenever someone sees them!
I don't know if this same artist is still working at the Beach Club, but we saw another artist working there last Christmas and her work also looked very good.
Beautiful mementos of the kids at a tender age!

Our beautiful and busy 7 year old DD sat without incident for her portrait. It is beautiful, and was about $80. It cost much more than that to get it framed. To the point of my reply, when framing the pastel we were informed that while it was lovely, it would have been much better if the background had been in the same family as our daughters colouring. She is a spring and has warm colouring and the backgrounds used are a soft grey, very cool. While it does look great I can certainly see his point!
She just loves it!

I love the pastel portraits that my parents had done of me and my four sisters at MK - yes, remember when they actually did them well at the park. Now most of the time it's just caricatures! Anyways, I have them of myself from 1974 & 1979 and have always wanted desperately to have them done of my 2 DS's. I didn't realize that they offered them at the resorts. Does anyone know which resorts usually have an artist on hand? I would make a special trip to a resort just for the portraits.

Just so you know, at the Poly, they only have the artist who does cartoon representations. If you want the pastel portraits, they are at the GF and the BC(at least from what I can remember). Most of the other hotels just have the cartoon artists. They aren't that expensive, considering the quality. We wanted to do this when were down, but our kids were too little. If they are under five, they'll only do the portrait from a photo. Oh well, I guess we'll have to wait a few more years!!!

I saw them at the poly last week, actually also at the Wilderness Lodge, Caribbean beach and the Contemporary also. I thought it was something like $15.00 for black and white and $20.00 for color. These were they cartoon representations. The artists really did a great job.

Our son had a caricature done at the Polynesian by Matthew. It really turned out nice. We also saw Matthew at the AK. This was in Dec 2000 if I remember correctly. It was colored with watercolors and cost about $30. Not exactly a portrait, but still real nice. We saw the portrait artist at BC lobby when we were there in July.

There were 2 portrait artists in the lobby of the BC in August; they worked on different days. Both of them did lovely work but I did prefer the work of one of the artists more. I don't remember the price, but it was definitely over $100. For the quality of the work, it seemed to be very fairly priced. She could work from a photo or live, but she told me she preferred to have the subjects in front of her. She charged more if she had to work from a photo.
I've had caricatures done at the Poly before, but I've never seen a portrait artist there.
Good luck.:D

DonnaDavid, I am very interested in this as we are going to be at the BCV in April. I'd like to have one made of my 3 sons. Do you think that would be triple the price? I wonder if there is a number I could call...anyone know?

I am also thinking about having a portrait done of my 3 kids when we go in October. I don't remember the price, but I'm fairly sure that the price for 3 people wasn't triple the price of one. You may have better luck if you post over on the Disney for Families board -someone has to be back recently and remembers the pricing.

There is a gal at the BC lobby (she looks liked Sophia Loren) that works from a photo or a live sitting. She works in pastels. She was there in March and I had a very nice chat with her. She is from Italy. Her work is absolutely beautiful. I am definitely thinking of having her do a picture next time I am there in Nov. I hope she is still there...stop in and see her, she's really wonderful, and has a great life story to share :)

sydnee-

Let me know if you do while you're there. We are planning to go in January and will be staying at YC so the BC will be so convenient. I really hope she is still there too.

Called the Beach Club and.........The artist is there most evenings 5:30p.m. - 10:00p.m. The cost is $75 per person and it takes approx. 30 minutes per person. This is done in Pastels. She has done up to 8 people in a single portriat but does not recommend that many.

We stayed at the BC the end of July this year and had the artist named ECHO do a single pastel of our three kids (7,8 and 11). She did it in color and is an amazing artist and has actually been sketching for DIsney for more than 20 years. The price including tax was 249.00. You actually pay in the gift shop and can use a credit card. It was a great lifetime memory for our family!

Wow, thats pricey, but I bet it was beautiful. Was that price including the frame?

Depending on how nice a frame you get, the frame may cost more than the picture. I just got a much smaller piece of art framed in what I thought was a relatively simple frame for $130. The portraits that I've seen done were very nice - I thought they were worth it. But, yes, they are expensive once you get it framed.
