Portland, Oregon help

Wow-I can't believe all the great responses! My DH and DD are excited about the recommendations. For a hotel, I'm thinking like a Holiday Inn or Comfort Inn type place-nothing too fancy

Again, thanks

Elise

Portland is great! I highly recommend Powells book store, it's amazing! This is a great link for resturants and other events happening here. http://portland.citysearch.com/ Hope it helps. I had no idea that there were so many Dis'er from portland! Hi everyone!

Just went to a Champ Car race in Portland a few weeks ago. If you don't mind staying over the river in Vancouver, WA, I'd recommend the Red Lion at the Quay. Stayed three nights there and it was great. Not too expensive and they have free wi-fi, pillowtop beds, big comfy rooms. A great restaurant/bar on-site that looks like a tall ship inside, too (a bonus for me)! It doesn't look like much from the outside (not bad, just not thrilling), but the rooms are great. They also have a deck area that looks out on the Columbia River. Really easy access to the 5 fwy, too. Easy to head down into Portland or up to Mt St Helens.

A couple sights that are a couple hours from Portland (but in different directions) would be Mount Hood - cool place (literally) and has year round skiing. The Timberline Lodge is fascinating and has a great restaurant. That is east of town. If you want to visit the coast take a look at Tillamook. Beautiful area, Garibaldi has tide pools and beaches, there is a great cheese factory... There is a place in Pacific City on the beach called Pelican Pub, it is my own personal slice of heaven on earth.
