What do you do with the portable tripods that screw onto digital cameras? I know that you mount it onto objects and such but what is the purpose of that instead of just holding the camera by yourself?

Well, the short answer is the tripod doesn't breathe and you do.;) A tripod or any solid, unmoving surface is going to be much more steady then you are. Steady camera=sharp pictures.

they help hold the camera still, so your shot is clearer. Movement will make your picture blurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Thanks. I purchased one and didn't know if I really needed it or not. I guess I'll keep it. :)

it might depend on how cheap it is. some might not be strong enough to support a bigger camera and then it won't really do any good( thinking of some of the freebies i see in camera bundles)
if the legs start to slip, don't use it as you could end up with a fallen camera

A tripod is a must if you're going to take pictures of fireworks. Most digital cameras now have a fireworks setting so it's easy. But there's no way you can hold a camera steady enough for that kind of shot. Also comes in handy if you want to be in a shot with your family.
