Where is the cheapest place to purchase a portable dvd player?
Thanks!

I bought mine about a year ago. I got it on a great deal through Amazon. I had searched through pricegrabber.com mysimon.com and pricescan.com and ended up with a great little unit for just about $160. Maggie

Check out the following stores...

Circuit City, Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Target and SAMS

I got mine a Circuit City. I did not go cheap and bought a good one, but with the price match policy I ended up saving well over 100.00 bucks. I bought it originally at 699.00. It has a 9 inch screen. Had a rebate for 75. So I got it for 624. I saw it on sale a month later there and it was 524. They matched the 100 bucks plus added 10%.

Dont go real cheap on them.
Some of them crap out easily. Do some research on them.
Mine is a Panasonic and is fantastic.
Next choices would be Sony, Toshiba, Audiovox, Mintek, GtG.
If your have two kids and they will be sharing, you wont want to go any less than a 7 inch screen. The GTG has 2 monitors on them. Both are 7 inches I believe. Saw that one at SAMS. I tried to research them but there wasnt anything out about them.
Good luck...

PS...They are worth their weight in GOLD!!!
17.5 hour car trip and 5yr old son didnt complain once.

I just bought a panasonic one at Best Buy for $220 + tax.

This thing works great. It comes with a plug for a regular outlet, a cigarette lighter for the car and a battery pack for the plane.

The screen is crystal clear and it works great.

Makes me wish I bought one sooner.

I second the post about buying a cheap one. Get at good name brand with a warranty. Our battery pack will last for one movie, which is good, but if the flight is longer than that.......:(
We didn't have a way to recharge, so you may want to upgrade the battery.
The car plug is priceless and you can buy splitters for the headphones so two can watch QUIETLY.
Make sure you take along the TV cables so you can use it in your hotel room.

Thanks for all the help!!! At least now I know what brands to look for:)

We also got ours on clearance at Target - $152 + $35 for a carrying case w/extra battery. Kawasaki, after I bought it, I looked at reviews online & they seemed to be pretty favorable. We only use ours for planes or long trips but love it so far! 7" screen & 2 outlets for headphones. No complaints from the kids on viewing.

They had some on clearance at Target today but I didn't pay attention to brand names. I resisted them for a long time, didn't want to stick them in front of the tube on trips, but I am a convert!!! Those things are lifesavers for traveling. Kept our 18 mo & 3 yr old manageable on a 5 hr flight. :)

Get the Initial Portable DVD Player With 7-inch Screen, model number IDM-1731. They sell them at Wal-Mart for $195.00. It's the best (price/performance) portable DVD made. You can check out the specifications at www.initialdvd.com and at the Wal-Mart site. I own two and they're great!

I just got a Panasonic 7" screen at Best Buy about two months ago. It was $249. There was a guy buying one for his son. He already had the Panasonic and said he never had a problem with it. They had a cheaper one, for $100 less, but the screen was smaller and I never heard of the brand.

two screens?? Is this online or at your local wal-mart??? Thanks for the input!

Oh, I found it!! Cool, now I know which one to get!! Thanks so much Pooh Angel!!:Pinkbounc

Walmart has a 5" Apex portable DVD player for $140. My mom got me one as a gift and so far it works well. The only downside to it is that all the controls (rewind, FF, menu selections, etc.) are only on the remote. But the remote is small so it isn't a huge downside. This is the cheapest I've seen in portable DVD players. You can find it on the website or perhaps at the store.

Question question. I don't own one.....want to get one, but JUST paid $978 for emerg. auto repair! augh. May still try and see and DH agrees with purchase.....how long would they last on an airline ride? I thought the battery only lasts for 2 hrs......not useful if you are on a cross country trip.
thanks for response...........

Yeah I think most batteries last 2 hours or so. A second battery can be purchased for most portable DVD players for around 50 or so I think.

You can get converters that plug in to the powerports on the seats and then you dont need to worry about the battery going low.

Mine is for the car/airplane. Got it on Ebay for 40.00.

I have seen some at Circuit City, Best Buy where you use the A/C adaptor to plug into a converter. The converter then plugs into the power port or the cigarette lighter in a car. Those run around 40.00 as well.

:chat: :wave2: would anyone suggest the special noise reduction headphones?:chat: And is a 5" screen acceptable? Obviously it is very small, but I am sure you realize they would be cheaper in price.
:wave2:  :wave2:  Thanks...........

For those of you with big families, here's my input:

We have 4 kids-9,7,3,8 months. We got a portable DVD player for the car but the sound without headphones was too low. My 3 year old couldn't keep her headphones on, and whenever I had to get to the back of the car I would nearly drown in a see of wires (which would then get tangled....ugh!!!). I realized my 8 month old would join the comotion soon enough, so here's what I did:

I went to Radio Shack and bought casette-CD converter. It's a wire that lets you play a portable CD player (aka Discman) through the car's sound system. It works with the DVD player. I was saved! The only problem is that my husband and I have to listen to the movie too, but that is a small price to pay.

Hope this helps!
