We just got home from our first stay at POR and had a wonderful time.

First off, I want to thank everyone for all the information on this site and Andre for your wealth of information. I felt like I knew the resort before I even got there.

I had booked RGR - garden view and sent in a fax requesting upper floor and close to the foot bridge leading to the main building. Our requests were granted and we were in 9268 (Oak Manor) and had a pretty view of the river. If we walked outside of our room, we could look down and see the movie that was played nightly. It took us less than 5 minutes to walk to the South depot, and about the same amount of time to get to the east depot.

Our beds did not have the bed scarfs on them, but I did notice a few of the rooms around us did have them. Our mousekeepers were great. They always left extra towels and Mickey soaps and shampoo. We got towel animals three days, and the girls were so excited to come back to the room and find them.

We landed around 4:50 and got to the hotel a little after 6. The ME bus went to Saratoga Springs, French Quarter, and then POR. On the way to the airport, we were the first stop, then FQ, and then Saratoga Springs.

We checked in and were in the room by 6:15. We went out until about 9:30 and when we returned our bags hadn't arrived in our room yet. I tried to wait up for them, but ended up falling asleep around 11. I woke up at 1:10 and called bell services to see if our bags had arrived at the resort because I was nervous that they never made it. They were there and someone brought them right up. I never did ask how long they had been there because I was too tired. I figured maybe they just thought it was too late and were going to bring them in the morning.

I thought the bus service was great. I'm not sure if we just got lucky, or Disney was prepard for the holiday crowds. We were at the bus stop between 7 and 7:30 everyday as we like to do rope drop and pre park opening breakfasts. We came back for a mid-day break and usually went back between 4-5. We usually only had to wait 5-10 minutes for a bus both at POR and at the parks. Even if we had just missed a bus, another one seemed to come soon after. The longest we waited was 18 minutes for a bus to HS. There weren't many people on the bus that early so we always got a seat. A few times coming back at night we had to stand - but that was after Illuminations and the parade at MK so I expected that. If my 5 year old didn't get a seat, someone always gave up their seat so she could sit down. People were very friendly on the bus.:)

The MK bus always went to the west depot first and then around to the south depot last. All other buses stopped at south depot first. The only time any of our buses went to French Quarter .

The food court was good. My girls loved the pasta and my dh enjoyed the pizza. We were only there during peak breakfast time once, and there were tables available.

As has been mentioned, the resort is beautiful and very peaceful. We tried to do as many things as we could at the resort, but didn't have enough time. We went swimming on Saturday and the girls had a great time on the slide. We loved just sitting on the benches and watching the boats go by - so relaxing and peaceful. We also walked to FQ to try the beignets and I was surprised by how short the walk was.

I really wanted to see Yee-Haw Bob perform, but it didn't work out. The one night we were up in the main building, I saw him in the River Roost but he must have been taking a break. The other nights we weren't out late, he wasn't performing. Oh well, another reason to go back.

Now I have to figure out how long I have to wait to ask dh when we can go back.

Awesome report Lisa! We've never stayed at POR and I always get excited when I hear stories from satisfied first-timers! We cannot WAIT to stay there in May!

The girls are ecstatic! We put mickey balloons in a huge box that they unwrapped and they all floated upwards with a note from Mickey Mouse telling them that we leave in 7 days. :)

I gave up trying to pay for the upgraded room, my travel agent was useless. LOL. Oh well, I am just happy to be on vacation. I have about 7 more work orders to finish and then I am free to pack and leave! Yay!! :yay:

Well, we got a bit of pixie dust last night upgraded to Royal Room with a Garden View from what I purchased which was a standard room with a standard view. Wow! The pizza is pretty good here. I wasn't expecting much and it actually was good.

That's more than a bit of pixie dust. That's like a shovel full (well not quite). Haha.

We just got back from our first family trip about three weeks ago. We stayed off site.

Today we booked next years trip and we chose a royal room at PO!!! I am so excited! This will be our first time using their dining and everything.

We have two daughters-ages 5 and 6? Which dining plan would you recommend? What kind of activities go on in a Disney resort? The only one I have stayed in is All star music and that was with a high school group.

The Dining plan question will likely get you a plethora of answers; however, I will answer based on my DD who was 7 when we first got the DP. We had the 1QS, 1TS, 1 snack plan. It worked well for us. One trip we used 2 dining credits Cinderella's royal table and another on Narcoosee's. Then used CS whenever we felt like it, sometimes for breakfast sometimes for an early lunch, etc. We always had snack credit and sometimes a counter service left because DD and I would share. If you are big breakfast eaters the TS credit is a good choice for the Princess Royal Breakfast at Akershus. You will be full until dinner...we were, but we did have a snack.

Activities at POR include pools, horse carriage rides, boat to DTD, fishing, movies on the lawn, boat/cycle rentals, loads of stuff - check out the portorleans.org site or the first part of the thread- there's lots to do. I just liked walking the grounds and taking photos. We are pretty full on park people, so we didn't spend loads of time at the resort, except for our one down day and we swam, walked, etc. River roost is fun (it's a pub, but kid friendly, I think. Good drinks!)

My daughter is a really good eater. She isn't a chicken fingers everyday kid, so when we got the "free" dining promo, we upgraded her to 10 over because it was only about $20 for the week and she could pick what we ate and didn't have to choose off the kids menu. If that describes either of yours, its worth it.

Sometimes we ordered appetizers (those are OOP) and took desserts back or just got fruit.

Incidentally, we did stay in the RR's the last trip (Riverfront) in Oak Manor. It was a great location for us. So awesome to wake up and walk out and see the Mill. The grounds are just immaculately beautiful!

I am pretty new to these boards but am so happy I found this one!! Thank you to everyone who posts. It's almost beginning to feel like you are all family.I look forward to the posts and check this thread every day! We are staying at POR for the first time Feb 18-24 . After reading this thread I can hardly wait!! I look to see if there is anything new every morning and evening. Thanks especially to Venom and Andre ! You guys are amazing!

Thank you all so much for the valuable information. Reading the official resort website news, I noticed that Oak Manor is having a roof refurbishment while we are there Feb 13th through 23rd. We booked a Royal Room with a pool view and requested Oak Manor. Now, we fear that the construction will take away from our very expensive 10 day stay at POR. Help! Should we keep the reservation or request another manor with Royal Rooms. Is anyone else in a small panic about this? Should we call the resort ahead of time and ask about the construction? Thank you in advance for your suggestions :goodvibes

Yes we will be there in 5 weeks and I am wondering and worrying about this same thing. We booked royal room standard view and requested Oak Manor. Can anyone suggest best room to request with closest proximity to bus stop and main building??? I'm also considering paying to upgrade once we arrive and check in depending on where they have our room assigned!

We don't go until May but after deciding on RGRGV we switched back to preferred because we were afraid to take the chance. We love the RGR but would have been disappointed if we had construction by our room. Hopefully the preferred rooms are safe and we will enjoy something new! Hoping for a special trip. It will be our last for a while and we go to celebrate our girls' birthdays.

Hey Lillykat: I remember you from planning last year! We stayed in preferred at POR and loved it when we were there this past spring! Great location! We are going back too in 2014 but we are going to try French Quarter.

Yay, Is it really nice? We have stayed at POR a ton, but never go for the RGR. My DH thinks it's gaudy with all the purple. LOL. Hope you have a magical visit! Eat some pasta for me! :-)

Hi!
We are staying at POR Jan.22-25 in the royal guest rooms. Can anyone make a room recommendation? Will there be construction going on then? Thanks

Well we love the RGR but hope the kids love the little bed. It will be so nice to be able to do quick refills and we like to bring breakfast to the room so being close is a plus.
