Just booked a last minute trip for May 2-10. Going solo for the first time...I am retiring from the military after 20 years and honestly need a break. I am staying four night at POFQ and then am moving to POR to stay in a Royal Guest room. I am sooooo excited. My friends and family think that I am nuts. I must give my DS11 credit...he doesn't think that I am nuts for going, just for not taking him with me!

I think it will be so much fun relaxing and doing what I want to do! Hopefully I won't get too lonely though.

I must say (ex-army or not!) I would not get away with going to WDW and leaving my 11-year-old at home! :) Good for you doing something you really want to though.

As far as being lonely goes, WDW is an unusual place in that it's full of strangers who are all doing the same things as you - so it's actually incredibly easy to strike up conversations and chat with people as you go around, and standing in lines, etc. The CMs are great to talk to also.

I spent a week solo at Disneyland last year (for the D23 Expo, which my DW and DD did not want to go to, so they spent the week in WDW instead and I met them there later). I had a great time, and didn't feel lonely at all. Met up with a few net friends via tweets/etc along the way, and made some new ones too.

I packed a bottle of Vodka in my luggage in a zip lock bag, and packed clothes around it. No problem.

Thanks Sue. Yeah, we've brought a bottle (plastic) with us the last two years with no problems :thumbsup2 , but it does weigh a lot more than clothes, and I hate being right at that potential "overweight" luggage point. I suppose if it hasn't been a problem the last two years, it should be fine this year too. :) As our kids get older, their clothes are getting bigger and harder to fit in a couple of checked bags... Oh the struggles of packing for Disney. ;) ;)

Hopefully the laundry areas at POR aren't always crowded. Anyone comment on the laundry washer and dryer availability? It's nice to bring less clothes and wash some part way through the stay.

Dan

Hi Dan,

We use the laundry facilities every summer at POR. I love being able to wash clothes while the kids are swimming.:cool1:

The laundry room I use is located in AB by the quiet pool (in between blg 17 and 18). I either wash clothes mid morning (on a resort day) or during our midday break (we go for two weeks in August). It's never been crowded and it's clean and air conditioned.:thumbsup2

It sure makes packing easier knowing I will wash clothes mid trip.:goodvibes

There are five laundry buildings at POR (one beside each quiet pool) so generally there's no problem with over-crowding.

:rotfl: :lmao: I'm just envisioning you at the airport finding out your luggage is one pound over, saying, "Hold on a minute," and taking swigs of vodka until the weight works  sorry, couldn't resist :flower3:

I don't think that I've seen this question posted anywhere previously. Can you see the fireworks at Epcot anywhere at POR? We just entered the double digits in our countdown and I Can't wait!!!

Everything is pretty much packed, just finishing up the carry ons. One more day and we are in Disney! Woo hoo!

We are continuing our tradition of trying a new resort every summer, this year it's POR . Medical issues make it necessary for us to stay in a room close to the main buildings(s) . I know those buildings are in the AB section , but I do not want to stay in that section, I want the mansions. What rooms would be closest to the bridge and the south ( 1st) bus stop?

You can see the higher firework bursts above the treetops from some locations, but nothing like seeing the show inside the park.

The closest non-AB rooms would be the River View rooms at the end of the wings of Magnolia Terrace, or River View in Acadian House. However you would be virtually as close if you got a Garden or Water View room just around the corners from any of those locations. See the map in the first post in the thread, along with the room-number layout plans I've got at http://www.portorleans.org/magnolia-bend.php/. The very end of the northern wing of Magnolia Terrace, near where it faces the river, would be perfect.

If it's a specific medical requirement, it might be worth contacting the Special Assistance folks to see if something suitable could be blocked out for you in advance.

Yup, we've had GV rooms in both Acadian House & Mag. Terrace close to the quiet pool between them. It was a short walk over the bridge to Old man Isl.to main buildings. We were also close to the North or East bus stops.

Laundry is in a building at each quiet pool. We throw a load in and go swim. Very easy, and makes it less of a chore. Many pack the Purex Sheets for easy of packing, and a lot cheaper then buying the little Tide boxes from the vending machines. We just stick a few in Ziplock bags. Tide has come out with Pods- also looks good for travel. Haven't tried those yet.

Nice to see that the DIS is back up and running again, I tried to look on it last night and it said that they were moving to new servers. Hopefully that means that it won't take too long between screens as it has been.

Our time it getting close. 6 weeks from today we fly out. :hourglass

FYI for all of us who love POR and have been waiting on the RR to open up for fall "free dine..." THEY DID! I had the chance of booking one when I originally booked our September trip, but I didn't. DD (12) finally admitted that she wanted a RR because it "Wasn't a princess room after all!" Finally got one today!

Hello everyone, we leave for our trip on Saturday :cool1:

I am preparing a room request document to fax to the Room Assignment Department, and wanted to double check our best location. We are looking for River View in Oak Manor with closest proximity to the bridge/walkway to the lobby/food court area. This is due to some mobility issues my daughter has.

Would I be correct in asking for placement as close to rooms 9271-9274 or 9071-9074? Also I know it's only a request and not a guarantee, but it doesn't hurt to ask! Anything that might help my dd enjoy her trip more is worth a try.

Thanks for your help :thumbsup2

Some are already finished. There's one picture on the first page of this thread. Andre also has several pictures of them on his site. Just click on it, in his signature. Here's some:

Yes, just like all the pictures of the finished rooms. :) (Buildings 14, 36, 37 and 38 are already done). See the first few posts in this thread, or I've got some at http://www.portorleans.org/gallery-guest-bunkkinsmom.php too.

Andre

Thank you. :)

Andre how do you contact the group for Special Assistance?

We've done laundry every trip. Cuts back on what we need to haul with. When the kids were younger, our trips were during Spring Breaks~a busy time, but never had trouble getting machines. A laundry room is located by each quiet pool, so it makes it easy to toss in a load and take a dip. Or, just run back and forth from your room. The laundry is open 24/7~you need your room key to access it in the wee hours. Just bring your own laundry supplies (I like the Purex sheets), but used to "baggie" the powdered stuff, and bring dryer sheets. Don't forget the stain stick!)
