Have never been to POR, how is the transportation to parks, boardwalk and DTD? Is the boat ride worth it or is bus better?

Stayed at AKL in July with DH, DS and DD, we rented a car but it stayed in the resort lot from our 2nd day until we left on the 9th day. We thought the transportation system was great. We had taken the advice of friends who thought the wait was too much and the trips too long to/from ASM. I've heard AKL has better overall transportation than the All Stars. We found the 5-10min waits (sometimes longer) better than trying to drive exhausted after a sweltering day in the park. Not having to wait for the car A/C to kick in was another perk.

thanks, can't wait to go back :)

Port Orleans uses "Magic On Demand" in the morning. This demand based dispatching stages out of Port Orleans itself.

POR differs from AKL in that POR has 1 main stop, and 3 perimeter stops. Some buses start on the perimiter (West, North, & East Depots), and others start at the main lobby stop, South Depot. It does NOT take more than just a few minutes to make all the stops.

Port Orleans will typically be much busier than AKL. However, because of this demand, the amount of buses sent through the resort will be much greater. (Probably 3-4x more buses)

the two times we stayed at POR, once at the French Quarter and once at Riverside, we loved the resort -- and hated the transporation. So much so that we we ended up taking our rental car to the parks, which was easier and quicker. No charge for parking since you're a resort guest. Perhaps others have had other experiences, but this would be the only negative thing I have to say about POR.

As for the boat to DTD -- never tried it, so I can't comment.

I've stayed at POR many times. Bus transportation has been fine. The last time was this year Nov 1-8. The longest we waited was 10 min. We too had rented cars in the past just to have it sit all week. It all depends on your family, some people are in a huge rush and if they get to the stop and a bus is not there they immediately start pacing soon to be followed by loud compaints when its only been 5 min. The boat to DTD is a nice ride probably about 20 min.

The boat ride to DTD is definately worth it. It is scenic and relaxing. However the posted times of operation is hourly from morning until 4pm. After 4 the boats run every 15 minutes or so. If you want to use the boat before late afternoon you need to make sure to be there on the hour to leave POR and on the half hour to return!

--Just to clarify re: our experiences with long waits at POR. I'm talking no less than 20 minutes for buses to the parks, and we waited twice that long from one back from Epcot. I don't mind a little wait, but this did seem excessive. Hopefully they've improved -- from Sue 1013's experience, it seems they may have.
