Pop Warner Fight?

Now back to the PW activities - I already got flamed on another thread because of my comments about the cheerleaders when I called them horrendous, but it sure sounds like I didn't miss the mark by much this year either. Our experience was 2 years ago at POR & it was bad.

I am glad that WDW took the action that they did with the football players and the fight. There was no reason for those kids to be out that late. Even the college sports teams have curfews that have to be strictly followed at all their sporting events & it certainly isn't 1am!!

WTG Disney!!

Amen to that. Last year we stayed at POFQ and sharing buses with them was awful. We saw all of the behavior others have described here (kids and mothers!), as well as cutting in bus lines. And there is absolutely no reason for kids 14-16 to be out unchaperoned at 1 am.

We actually changed the date of our trip this year so we were leaving the day the Pop Warner crew started showing up. First time in all my trips to Disney World I was actually happy we were going home. Next year we are going early and avoiding them again.

I've never been to WDW during PW week... frankly, all the stories on here have scared me off. So, I'm really glad to hear to Disney took a stand and threw some people out and (although I completely disagree with the mother who went to the news media - she's an idiot IMO) I am pleased to see the publicity. Hopefully, word will get out to the teams that Disney will not tolerate unruly behavior and, unless they want to get kicked out in the middle of the night, they will keep their kids under control.

[MOD EDIT: THIS ARTICLE IS NOT ABOUT ANYTHING HAPPENING AT POP WARNER ON DISNEY PROPERTY.. IT'S SOMETHING ELSE FROM 2006]

You hear about football players getting into shoving matches but I guess it is not a new for PW parents to get involved in the fights. Listed below is an article from a Jacksonville newspaper 2006 article that talks about a near riot between two Florida PW teams. Seems that some of the parents were leading the riot and it got to the point that one parent stuck another parent with a down marker while another parent was reported heading to their car for a gun!

A Keystone Heights Pop Warner football tourney ends in unsportsmanlike style.

By DANA TREEN, The Times-Union

There was no ruling Monday, but unsportsmanlike conduct was a strong contender after a passion for youth-league football turned to fisticuffs during the weekend in Keystone Heights.

In a midfield melee between Pop Warner football teams from the Jacksonville and Orlando areas, one man was beaten with a measuring chain and police said witnesses reported another man headed to his car for a gun.

No shots were fired and no one was seriously injured, but the fight near the end of a game Saturday between Junior Midgets teams emptied the benches and drew coaches and players' parents onto the field.

Clay County Sheriff's Office deputies were called to quiet the fight that observers said started over a close game between teams of 12- to 14-year-old players.

Stella Brown of Interlachen was at Little Rain Lake park when the fight broke out about 3 p.m. She said the shade had drawn her to the sidelines, where the South Orange Bears from near Orlando had its team benches.

She said she could hear parents cursing.

"They just got upset because they were losing," she said. "It was a tight game."

About that time, one player pushed another and a scrap started.

Coaches and adults poured onto the field, and one man grabbed a marker and chain used to measure distances on the field and hit one of the Forestview Tigers' coaches.

The victim was bleeding from his mouth and lips when deputies arrived, according to a police report.

Brown said one woman grabbed an umbrella and was threatening kids before striding across the field.

"She was threatening the Jacksonville side with the umbrella," Brown said. "There were so many people and players on the field the referees couldn't control it."

One team finally was pulled into an end zone and the other put outside a gate to restore order.

"Once the mamas and all got involved, it was a pretty tough situation," said Ronnie Thomas, president of the Keystone Heights Pop Warner Association. "It was kind of like a riot."

Each team has about 20 players, as well as coaches and parents, he said.

Thomas said his organization was one of the hosts of the Azalea Bowl tournament that included several games at the park Saturday.

Other games also were taking place in other areas, he said.

Thomas said his group is beginning to think there should be a deputy at future tournament games.

"We don't know if we want to have it again," he said.

Ricky Wright, president of the Putnam Athletic League, said his organization oversaw the tournament and is sorting out who was responsible.

Wright, who is a lieutenant for the Clay County Sheriff's Office and has 22 years in law enforcement, said he doesn't know what sanctions or restrictions will be placed on those found responsible.

"It does not send a good message," he said. "We do not want any adults to be a part of this if they cannot control their emotions."

I think the problem is that the "chaperones" (and I use that term very loosely) look at the whole experience as a vacation to WDW and not as a responsibility. This is very obvious by the comments that so many toddlers and babies had to be awakened to leave in the middle of the night. They should have never been there to start with. You can't focus on the needs of a small child and be a chaperone at the same time. The chaperones should have made sure that all the kids were in bed at a specific hour (personally, I think 10pm is late enough for kids that age who are supposed to be at their best to compete in an athletic competition) and making sure they stayed in bed. There really shouldn't be any rooms that don't have a chaperone in them (they could be in connecting rooms with seven team members and a chaperone) so the kids don't have the opportunity to sneak out. I'm sure there are some teams where the kids behave reasonably well (after all, I was at Disney in February during cheerleading competitions and didn't see any cheering in the parks, or any bad behavior). I'm also sure that the people involved in these incidents have been involved in incidents before - maybe not as big or as bad, but there had to be signs that there could be trouble.

Until the adults accept responsibility for not policing their teams well enough to prevent the fight, until the adults accept responsibility for the fight itself, nothing is going to change. I know I will be very sure not to travel during Pop Warner week.

I remember when I was in high school and went on band or drama trips we had strict rules to follow or else mom & dad would be paying for us to be transported back home. We had to stay in groups of at least four people, we had to be back in our hotel rooms by 10pm and they placed masking tape on the outside of the door as a deterrent to leave and we had to stay in our rooms until they came and did a room check the next morning. If the tape was broken or missing when they came around you can guarantee that we were going to be either heading home early or if not being sent home early that we would be banned from any other trips. I don't think that a chaperone needs to be in every room or even in an adjoining room but those kids need to have stricter rules and harsh consequences.

You are making the pop warner families and their thug kids to be the victim in all this. They brought it on themselves.

No, I'm not. I'm simply stating that the situation, considering the number of people, could have been handled better. I have chosen to discuss this from a public relations standpoint, and from that standpoint, I think it could have gone better.

I can't imagine being the coordinator and having to find suitable accommodations in 20 minutes.

This is my view and I'm sticking to it. Thanks everybody for letting me share my opinion.

From a PR point of view, I think Disney did the right thing. They showed their guests that they will not put up with thuggish behavior.

And I can't imagine being a family on vacation and having to be caught in the middle of that violence.

And I mean that respectfully - not flaming you. I just like to see Disney clamping down on that kind of behavior.

From a PR standpoint, Disney and PW actually went above and beyond arranging and PAYING FOR transportation to their new accommodations.

And Pop Warner helped the teams locate new accommodations; as they should.

Well, then, I guess I'll have to leave my opinions to myself. At least I tried.:confused3 Not all of us are privy to the information that you are somehow pulling up from somewhere...

There was a recent news article linked to one of the threads (there is another thread on the Community Board about this topic) on this discussion that gave that information. I can't remember which thread contains the link but people are getting their information from various news articles as more information from sources such as PW and Disney is being given.

we stayed at AsMu dec 6-10 and these groups were a problem the WHOLE time, not just the night of the fight. 2 dif. nights I called front desk in the wee hours of the morning to ask that security stop the hoards of teens from running up and down the resort, loudly swearing and yelling. others also complained.

This nasty event of the 1am eviction marred an otherwise uneventful few days. I stayed at All Star Sports from December 6th to 12th and unless you were at the arcade or the front desk on the night of the eviction -- it was a non-event.

as I stated in my previous post, it was not an otherwise uneventful few days.
maybe at sports, but at Music it was bad. the way these kids were allowed to behave for days(or should I say wee hours of the night)... a fight was inevitable. kudos to Disney for finally kicking them out!

This is a clear reminder as to why my family will stay in the WL next time we go to WDW in Dec. as we go the same week as PW. We noticed them in the parks but we avoided them as much as possible.

I'm not suprised this happened. My daughter & I used to go the 2nd week of Dec every year & always just missed Pop Warner. Then about 6 or 7 years ago Pop changed thier dates. I have never seen a more obnoxious group in my life(the parents more so than the kids!)!! The following year I tried to avoid them but Disney refused to tell me when Pop was going to be there! They said it was discriminating! They finally started telling me every year so I can plan accordingly. I think Disney did the right thing by asking all groups involved to leave, the other groups will think about it ( I doubt it though). Disney needs to think about refusing to host thier super bowl because it seriously gets in the way of other guests' enjoyment.

This year's Pop Warner Dates are expected to be :

December 7th to 13th..

Avoid those dates accordingly.

You can pretty much always plot your own guess at the PW dates by adding 10 days to Thanksgiving.. and then the event will run for five or six days that week.

While I agree w/every one of these postings one more thing needs to be said to get something actually done. We all need to communicate our feelings to DISNEY. I have been trying for almost 10 years with little to no success. If everyone said something to Disney maybe they'll get the picture! There is a link to guest services right on the Disney World web site. We all need to stick together for good thing to happen!

The problem isn't just PW it is parents today thinking that their kids are little angels. "They didn't start the fight, why are they being punished".

My friend just chaperoned a teenage church group to Mexico. When coming back into the states bags were searched and some drugs were found. My friend lit into the child who owned the bag. When they got home the boys mother got mad at my friend because the drugs couldn't have been her sons and he was embarrased from being yelled at in front of his friends. Her poor son.

When are parent going to learn that ALL kids are capable of bad moments (yes, even yours and mine)! Punish the kids accordingly - don't make excuses.

I always think that communicating your thoughts and feelings to Disney on any matter directly is an excellent idea..

To expedite that process...
