Ok DISUNC. You made:sad1: me cry. This is one of my most wonderful memories of my Dad. I too got the wake up call in the middle of the night. I remember my family sitting in the living room watching this. This is my first memory of something "big" happening! I remember after watching this my Dad bringing my older sister and I outside in the middle of the night and pointing to the moon, completely in awe of the fact that there were men up there. I remember how amazing it was. I was 7 and my DSis was 10.

Now whenever I hear anything about that night I cry, because it makes me think of my Dad, who has passed away. But it is a fantastic memory!

2 of my DDs had a teacher in 5th grade, who worked on that mission for NASA, when they left elementary school, he gave each iof them a card with a little striip of some gold material attached to it, that was from the "spaceship". They don't realize the significance of the card, so I have taken them and put them away for safekeeping!

Excuse me...your little sister was there too and I though of the same thing when I read DU's post. I was three and I swear it is my first memory(except when you wanted to steal my green horn that I got on my birthday that year)...But I remember sitting right in front of the tv because I was so little and everyone saying sshhhhh!:ssst: .

OK......I'm done.

Yup, but you didn't get to come outside with us because you were a baby:snooty: ....

Now girls ...PLAY nice!...:rotfl2:

DU!.....You are a very good story teller!:thumbsup2 ....I just love the pictures...;) I remember going to NASA..and NOT being very impressed....I like the hanger with the rover in it, and the rocket garden...But I really didnt think much of the rest!...

Too funny about that lady!...:rotfl2: ..At least you were'nt sitting in front of her...:rotfl:

You're BACK! :yay: :yay: :yay: And it was a great post, diss to FL's tolls aside (yeah, I've logged my time on the Garden State... NO comparison!)

But, frankly, I'm a little scared to get involved again. How can I be assured I won't be left hanging for motnhs again down the line? I'm skeptical. And. I now need to know how the camera got on the moon first.

;)

How NASA did it was with a module attached the the lander, called the MESA. It contained a TV camera. Armstrong pulled a D-ring, the MESA swung out, and he positioned it for proper pickup. Here's the link to the full transcript: http://www.hq.nasa.gov/alsj/a11/a11.step.html and the relevant portion produced below:

109:20:56 Aldrin: Okay. Everything's nice and straight in here.

109:20:58 Armstrong: Okay. Can you pull the door open a little more?

109:21:00 Aldrin: All right.

109:21:03 Armstrong: Okay. (Pause)

109:21:07 Aldrin: Did you get the MESA out?

109:21:09 Armstrong: I'm going to pull it now. (Pause)

[Neil is pulling the D-ring which releases the MESA, attached to the side of the LM under Buzz's station, and lets it swing down into an accessible position. Once down on the surface, he can adjust the MESA height if necessary. Training photo S69-31080 (scan by Paolo Dangelo) shows Neil working at the MESA. A drawing of the MESA shows the location of the TV camera which will show Neil's climb down the ladder.]

109:21:18 Armstrong: Houston, the MESA came down all right.

109:21:22 McCandless: This is Houston. Roger. We copy. Standing by for your TV.

109:21:39 Armstrong: Houston, this is Neil. Radio check.

109:21:42 McCandless: Neil, this is Houston. Loud and clear. Break. Break. Buzz, this is Houston. Radio check, and verify TV circuit breaker in.

109:21:54 Aldrin: Roger, TV circuit breaker's in. And read you loud and clear.

PS: Thanks for the update, DU! It made my day.

I was so excited this morning to see you had updated, but I didn't have time then to read, so I just came home, made a cup of tea, and sat down here for a wonderful read. I took the last sip of tea as I read the last paragraph. You are wonderful. The toll booth incident was hilarious. Sorry you didn't meet a real astronaut. Gives you reason to go back! Glad to see you're back, and hope to read more soon.

Another great installment, very funneeeeeeeeeee:lmao: . I really like the chapter leading up to to your day at Nasa. That piece of history was before my time, it was interesting to hear your take on it, my son is a skeptic, he doesn't believe it happened. My question is why have we never gone back to the moon?
Anyway, i got a different tour than you did, my Uncle worked for Nasa in 1988 so we got to avoid ticket lines and loud buses, (he was airforce, and worked mission control, I always thought he was an employee, guess not)
Can't wait to read about suicidal squirrels.

On July 20, 1969, a bit over 8 years Man walked on the Moon. Can you imagine something of that magnitude in this day with all the technology ever happening?

Something else BIG happened that day!! What you haven't heard about it? :confused3 Well, that is the day I took my FIRST steps. I can't believe that it wasn't in any of the history books. :sad2: :rotfl: :rotfl2:

Well DisUnc, that installment was definitely worth the wait! :cool1: :dance3: Just don't make us wait another FOUR months for another installment. :rolleyes1

'Bout time.. Man i thought you would be doing your 2007 trip... Had to laugh about the tolls... I always keep a bag of quarters with me when I go to florida just for them... Drives me crazy. Over in your favorite state MI :teeth: we don't have tolls... Too much work... Now are we gonna get another installment soon or in 4 more months? I do have to give ya credit at least you didn't use any of PD's invisable ink... :teeth:
