Pop Century Stay: The Good and Bad

You called to check on your luggage at 1 am, waited for over an hour and then went to retrieve it yourself. Why in the world wouldn't you call and demand your room be cleaned or changed during this time? I know you said it was late, but you were up anyway! :confused3

I hope this isn't offensive but I find that at the value resorts I see more of the smoking in non designated areas and loud behavior just because there are more people staying at those resorts even if the same % of guests across all of disney exhibit these behaviors. If there are 500 people and 10% smoke/are loud/etc, I might see 50 people. If there are 1500 people I will see 150 people.

To me, it has nothing to do with the supposed "class" of people at the resort - just the sheer larger number of people the values can accomodate.

Yeah! I'm staying at Pop in Feb. and I guess I picked the right resort for me!
I am a smoker and a drinker!
Should be a blast!
(I have yet to earn my GED, though. Trying to save up the money for the class.:rolleyes1)

From the American Heart Association
Studies show that smoking prevalence is higher among those who had earned a GED diploma (39.6 percent) and among those with 9-11 years of education (34.0 percent) compared with those with more than 16 years of education (8.0 percent). It's highest among persons living below the poverty level (29.1 percent).

Pretty obvious that the less educated you are .... the more likely you are to smoke.

And generally, the less educated one is the less money one makes.

Wow, I usually avoid controversy, but that statement really offended me. Just because I choose to stay at Pop doesnt mean I have a GED. In fact I have a masters degree, my DH is working on a masters as well. Our 4 year old LOVES Pop. I think its great for young kids. I <CAN> afford to stay deluxe, but choose not to. So, please dont make generalized statements such that I must be a low educated, poor, smoking, drinking, rude person. Becuase, I am NONE of the above, thank you!

I have stayed at Pop twice and I am not poor, I don't smoke or drink. I could stay at a moderate only if there are people who smoke in designated areas only, but I think people will do whatever they want no matter what hotel they stay in. It is really up to staff to enforce the rules. But you are going to find less educated people who drink, smoke, and drugs than people who are more educated, and I know that first hand in my job where I have to deal with all classes of people. Less education goes along with the poorer class, and thats why education is pushed on our children.

ME and DW will be at POP in 8 days (Sept. 21-30). Looks like I will have to take up smoking.:rotfl2:
Even so can't wail to be there, I'll be spending most of my time in the parks and restaurants.:hippie: :cool1:

My gang and I will be there at the same time. I'll be the one smoking in the DSA and who knows, I may just have a drink in my hand too. However, if you see me heading to my room for the night, you can be sure that I DO have clean sheets on my bed!

we'll be there too - and we'll be glowing.. at the hippy dippy pool - if you check the "Dis Meets" forum - there's a thread a bunch of Dis'ers plan to decorate their windows, and hang out with glowing items... I hear there'll be drinks too... :rolleyes1 and maybe some... popcorn::

no comment on how many rednecks will be around... :rolleyes1

okay same problem different resort.

disney does not change the room lock until YOU check in. So the last guest can definitely go back to the room AFTER the maid has cleaned it.

I don't think that is true....we were there a few weeks ago...icky stay at pop as well.....we had a split reservation due to free dining and on the day that we had to recheck in our keys did not work after breakfast...and we were supposed to check back into the same room

Your DS does not have a college degree though, does he?!?! I bet he smokes and drinks enough for the two of you combined. It's the young ones you have to watch!

We'll be there Dec.8-15, I'll have a chat with 12yo DS about his smoking and drinking:rotfl:

We just back from WL on Sunday. Saw plenty of drinking, but not any smoking. Oh, wait, I think we were the ones drinking :rotfl2:

Housekeeping has gone downhill everywhere. We checked in at 3pm on Thursday and our sheets were clean but the bathroom was filthy. Called housekeeping and they sent somebody up to clean the room and the manager came up, apologized, and set us up for dinner that night at WCC for our trouble. Excellent service and I would stay at WL again :cloud9:

What in the world does that have to do with staying at a value resort??? That is very offensive to everyone who stays at a value.

I see nothing wrong with doing anything as long as it doesn't effect other people. If you want to drink do so, you are on vacation and should have fun. If you smoke please do it in designated areas and don't walk by me and my family. People are allergic and can have an asthma attack when exposed. It is harmful to others and they should not be exposed especially children. But I don't care what you do as long as it doesn't affect me or my family who choose not to do that, and I think most people agree with that.

We just got back from PC on Saturday, too.

Our mousekeeper was AWESOME. Our room was spicky-span daily, she left us extra towels everyday after we asked once, and she made towel animals and arranged our beanie babies all cute-like. She even left us a cute note one day! We drank, but mostly in the room. Maybe once late at night at the pool. I didn't see that many people smoking - just a couple of times waiting on a bus.

That said, Pop Century was okay, but I didn't lovelovelove it. I did love the price, but I missed having a hot tub and a nicer pool more than I thought I would. What surprised me was what DIDN"T bother me - I was so worried about the size of the room and it really wasn't much different than the moderates, other than the sink area. I actually think Pop has better drawers/storage than PO-R or CSR. My biggest dislike at PC was that Grand Central Station of a food court. The food was fine, in fact the Greek Salad and Veggie Calzone were quite yummy, but yikes. Madhouse.

I was at POP from August 13th to 21st and I never notices anyone smoking outside of designated areas, people drinking all over the place, nor did I have any issues with Mousekeeping.

It can get more noisy but like you said, the resort does have many more guests than other resorts.

Wow....I didn't mean to offend anyone with this post. I was just trying to be honest about how I felt about POP. There were things I enjoyed and didn't enjoy. I did not like the smokers walking the walkways because they exposed my little one to secondhand smoke. I did see excessive drinking and I did not like that because I don't like my little one to be around it. That being said....people have the right to smoke in designated areas. People should also drink responsibly. The huge majority of smokers and drinkers did both at POP. Income/economics play heavily in the odds that someone smokes or drinks excessively (as others have pointed out in their replies). Just as you are likely to see more smoking/drinking at a Super 8 compared to Sheraton....you are more likely to see both at a value resort compared to a moderate/luxery resort. I just wanted people to be aware that I saw these things at POP. I did not see much of this last year at All Star Movies. Sorry to those I offended!

Also....I did not sleep on the sheets. Slept on the blanket cover!

pirate: My DD and I have stayed at the POP at least 10 times since its opening in 2002 and have enjoyed it each and everytime. The biggest plus is that if you use the bus transportation you get right on and don't have to wait long or wait for someone else to be dropped of at there resort (All Stars). I think you will like it there and if possible ask to be upgraded to a preferred location so that you can be close to the food court, bus stops and outside bar. But if you have car then ask to be close to the parking lot because you can get in and out faster and the room is much more quiet on the parking lot side and you can get to the parks faster plus, you don't have to pay for parking at the parks because it is free for Disney property guests.
Have Fun!!
